This ride was filmed in Hanoi, Vietnam on a Friday morning around 9:15am. The main weekday morning rush hour (usually between 730am~830am) had died down by this point, so we were able to zoom through Hanoi relatively quickly. Normally during rush hour, a 20-minute ride like this can become 45 minutes or longer.
I was riding on the back of a GRAB motorbike. GRAB is a ride-share service, just like Uber. It's the main way I commute around Hanoi.
In this video, you'll see what normal traffic looks like, including lots of honking and lots of traffic violations. This is normal, daily life in Vietnam.

Before going to Hanoi this would have looked so insane! Now after experiencing it and not to mention that this is a pretty smooth ride compared to rush hour, it is just reminiscent of a beautiful chaotic but organized mess. Once I built up the courage to use grab bike instead of taxi, riding in a car just couldn't compare. It seemed so boring and slow. All my commutes on motorbike were some of the best times because I was able to really feel the magic of Hanoi this way. So many things to see! I am so excited to be going back and officially move to Hanoi this December!

Thanks! Glad you like it. I saw your pre-edit comment as well. I have a 360 camera, but the only reason I don't use it is because it uses up a lot of bandwidth for many viewers from around the world. My previous 360 videos from Korea were cool and all, but many complained about the low quality because their ISPs throttle their data or cap their data, so they could only watch it in low resolution. Also, many people still don't know how to watch 360 videos, so I got a lot of complaints about that too. The file size is also super huge, and though my laptop is custom built for 4K live editing and rendering, it still bogs it down a lot... especially if it's a longer video. Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting!

OMG!! This is truly insane. This is the kind of video I live for. Something so unique and inspiring. Inspiring in the sense it is fodder for my art. Colour, motion, pattern. Makes me laugh when I think of being at a red light in a small town where my friend lives. There were 3 cars waiting at 4:40 in the afternoon and she said "man, what is it with this gridlock?". LOL!! Keep doing what you are doing, Corey. You are a gift to us all.

Omg! This chaos, something so iconic about Vietnam traffic, especially Hanoi. There is a reason why I feel so stressful everytime I have to go out (I'm Vietnamese). But yeah, living in chaos for long enough and people just smoothly goes with the flow. Don't worry my friends, all the fear will disappear when your hand firmly grips the accelerator. That's when you know you're a part of the flow, of this beautiful chaos.

Never get tired of your voice Cory! Well this was kinda weird, in a good way though, I was right in the middle of making sure by September donation to you was processed ok when suddenly the notification of this vid flashed up on my screen! Haha. I was completely enthralled with your bike ride. OMG I don't know how many times I said "Oh Shit!"" while watching you nearly becoming a sandwich filling between two vehicles during that, so scary, wow I could not do that. Definitely one of your best so far, and showing a complely different side of Hanoi too. And that clear blue sky, looks like a crisp autumn day and not as hot and sweaty for you like it was in high summer? That big long flyover which went over a lake looked as if it should have had a Bangkok Skytrain running along the length of it. What more can I say, except I'll be running this vid again later in the day. Absolutely thrilling, thoroughly enjoyed it. Take care, Ian

Thank you so much for your support. ^^ I'm glad the timing was nice. hehe I've been living in Vietnam for over a year but I haven't really shown what riding around in traffic is like. So I think I'm going to try and make this a regular thing, showing what it's like at different times of the day and in different areas. It was hot and sunny but a cool autumn breeze was blowing. Perfect weather in Hanoi these days... it will soon get cold! Thanks for leaving a comment, Ian! Cheers

Great video idea. 👍 I feel like ppl stepping out into the street was more stressful than the other bikes or cars. It’s pretty cool that you didn’t have to stop very much on the way. When I was in Hanoi last summer I was so stressed crossing the streets and I found it so awesome that all the locals were so chill about it. Maybe next time I go I’ll consider taking a Grab.
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, many times the people don't even look before walking. It's definitely stressful to not try and kill anyone while driving around. It's one of the main reasons I don't drive a motorbike in Vietnam. I had a close call almost crashing into a family of 4 (mom and 3 kids) on a motorbike. I narrowly dodged them and I can still see the fear on the face of those kids. So I'd rather trust a driver who's been doing it for decades instead of doing it myself with zero motorbike driving experience. Next time, definitely take Grab motorbikes everywhere! It's one of the BEST ways to experience the city for just $1.00 or two. ^^

Hi Cory, you said on your way to work...so you do have another job beside KZfaq? I’m glad you are back filming again. I hate traffic and people drive over there. They drive where ever they want , they don’t have to stay in their lane, they can turn right on the far left lane or vice versa....it’s really scary.
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think I mentioned it a few times in Q&A videos and especially in live streams, that I do freelance work and voice acting. KZfaq doesn't pay the bills unless you're like famous with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. But even then, you might not be making much money. So most of those famous people have brand sponsorships or sell merchandise like t-shirts and stuff. And yeah, the "Me First" mentality is definitely a thing in Vietnam when it comes to traffic, standing in line at the store, etc.

Yeah, if 3D / VR technology was more mainstream and everyone was using it, I would love to make experiential videos in 3D / VR. Really make the viewers feel like they're there. I have some 360° videos from Korea on my channel, but they weren't very popular with viewers because of slow internet speeds in people's home countries, and the constant confusion on how to view 360° on various devices. I still have my 360° camera, so maybe one day I'll bust it out. We'll see... Thanks for commenting!

As Phuong said, it's the same as taking a bus or riding in a taxi. But I also don't let drivers get off easily for dangerous driving or breaking tons of traffic laws during my ride. I report them to GRAB through the app with details of what the driver did to make me feel unsafe. I have had to tell a driver in the past to just stop and let me off and cancel my ride, because he was so insane while driving like a maniac.

Despite the chaos, the relatively slow speeds gives you a bit of time to react if there's a problem. Personally, the only time when it gets scary is when its raining hard. Too hard to see, and less control. By the way, please do a video of the new metro line.
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I tell people that even though there's tons of motorbikes and chaos, people are driving relatively slow so reaction times to things are always pretty good. And yes, heavy rain and driving sucks! I would need goggles to see anything. hehe I'll look into the metro line stuff, but no promises. ^^

OMG! That is some crazy traffic scenes, your driver had some narrow misses. How fast was your driver going and weren't you scared at times? He was going through the opposite of traffic to get by. Why do they even have traffic lines and lights if nobody obeys then? haha And how far do you work??
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
My driver definitely broke traffic safety laws many times in this video. It's not right, but it is normal here. I've never had a Grab or taxi ride in Vietnam where the driver obeyed all traffic laws during the entire trip. Someone always runs the red light, or drives in the wrong lane, or whatever else. I'm so used to it that I'm not scared anymore. I just expect it now. Vietnam is still emerging out of its 3rd world status. I'd say it's like 2nd world status, as so much economic growth is happening here. Lots of modernization, construction, etc. But for most of Vietnam, road safety and traffic mentality is still stuck in 3rd world status. Not eveyone breaks traffic laws, but since so many do, sometimes the best way to get home is to just follow the flow. I'm not sure of the distance from home to work, but in this video, my driver took an unusually long route. Normally, drivers will go a complete different way, which I was hoping to film that day. Instead he went this other way. Still made for an interesting video. ^^

@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree. Cars would be fine in this city if they drove nicely and obeyed the law. But many car drivers have a motorbike mentality, thinking they can go anywhere just like they do on motorbike. It's completely different. So many car drivers are aggressive and care nothing for those around them. It's a "me first" mentality, and those types of drivers are the main problem. If they all drove normally and by the law, there wouldn't be so much of a problem. Anyway, Vietnam's traffic laws and driving culture need to improve a lot if Vietnam expects to advance into a 1st world country. The lawlessness and dangerous driving habits hold them back a lot in the eyes of the international community. And thanks for the comment about my voice. haha Cheers!

The project started in 2006 and was supposed to be finished in 2010. But now it's 2018 and still not close to being finished. Lots of corruption, bureaucracy, deaths during construction, etc. Here's an article about it from this summer: vietnamnews.vn/society/451764/watchdog-demands-answers-over-delayed-ha-noi-railway.html#pTrzPp2QHvPzMuAZ.97

Actually this elevated metro line started their trial run 3 weeks ago. There is another metro line currently under construction. That one has the first half elevated and the second half underground.

This elevated metro is finished and will be in commercial operation in the next January. There is currently another metro line still under construction which is elevated and underground. Hanoi is also developing a system of elevated inner city expressways.

You know what's funny? The fact that the two police officers actually were violating a bunch of traffic laws, for example forgetting to turn off signal during the whole long stretch of road, even including turning right. That's amazing! I'm a Vietnamese and I'm afraid of Hanoi's traffic.

You have not done video re boarding mini buses for sightseeing around Hanoi . I am a 75 year old going to Hanoi in Feb. I have watched most of your videos and find them very informative. As I am not able to walk long distances. , sightseeing will have to be confined to taxis, tuk,Tuk. May I email you re my forthcoming trip as there are lots I want to research into before I go.

I'm glad that my videos can help you learn more about Vietnam. I'm sorry that you can't walk long distances there. The only kind of tour bus I know of is the double-decker open top red bus that goes around the city to various spots. That might be nice for you, otherwise you'd have to book a private tour company to show you around.

Scary wow!! I would be a back seat driver for sure. Do they ride bicycles too? Nevermind just saw hah whoa no cops to police the wild driving, your uber guy went into on coming traffic to get around the median to the proper side of the road. Do people in Vietnam get road rage? The lady in yellow crossing the street almost gave me a heart attack. Do they need insurance to drive there? Well good video, Hanoi is a nice looking city.
@CoryMay81

There are police, in the video there are two guys wearing khaki-colored uniforms. They actually come across a guy driving in the wrong direction and though I couldn't record it, I looked back and they had stopped him. So police do enforce traffic laws here in many areas. There's lots of speed traps and check points to catch people driving without helmets or without a mirror. But, there are also many of these cops who accept bribes when they pull over people. Corruption runs rampant in Vietnam in all sectors. Yes, they do get road rage, but most of the time it's just a few bad words to each other then they drive off. Occassionally, arguments and fights happen, too. I think that's normal in any country. I don't know about the insurance thing, though, sorry.

Super interesting, but i can only watch half of it! What is the mentality required to deal with such 'traffic chaos'? Will this 'chaos philosophy' (if that is a sensible notion) will forever be part of this traffic system? Does this kind of chaos extent to other areas of the culture? It feels like a 'Western wild wild west" Am I right or wrong? thx.

Yes, you hit that nail on the head. Me-first... or... Eat or be eaten - just like all animals - except the vegan kinds. In 2015 alone, there were some 6.3 million fatal, injury, and property damage crashes that occurred in the U.S. www.statista.com/topics/3708/road-accidents-in-the-us/. On average there are 38,000 fatal crash PER year in the US and the number of injuries are about 10 times that. Closer to home, one of my extended relative got hit by a motorbike in VN while walking, and died from head injury - at least it was relatively quick. On the positive side, the Economist Journal list VN as the fastest growing economy in 2018. AND it shows from your excellent video footage. The lack of architectural regulations seem to bring out everything from the sublime minimalist to the grotesque idolatry. Diversity is the sign of fast-growing anything, science, art, or music etc. (no time to regulate). Excitement/ risks = 2 sides of the same coin. It seems Hanoi is very conservative still. Or does it hide its secrets behind the conservative veneers and sub-cultures? .... I read there is a group of nudists making news (ttps://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/travel-leisure/article/2125244/nudism-asia-vietnams-hanoi-naturists-arent-afraid-break ) - also on theguardian.com and even a LBGT parade video on youtube. But being a 'mono-culture', will the young VN generations be experimenting with, let's say San Francisco's sub-culture leather festival which draws over 400,000 people in a single weekend recently (the infamous Folsom Street Fair). S.Korea has some interesting punk sub culture. Any of that happening soon in VN? www.scmp.com/lifestyle/fashion-luxury/article/2116448/south-koreas-street-style-revolution-90s-k-pop-nostalgia Have a great and fun week - and thanks for the videos. LOVE THEM.

I know this is because it takes a lot longer to save enough money to get a car in vietnam, but I Prefer the streets stay mostly bike traffic. Takes up less space and decreases the odds of a fatal traffic accident (in terms of collision)!
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. Vietnam's roads are designed for bicycle traffic, which later became motorbike traffic. They weren't designed for buses, large SUVs, etc. But the mentality of those large vehicle drivers is that they are king of the road. They drive their car the same way they would their motorbike, thinking there is no difference. They create all the traffic jams because they're too stubborn to give anyone a chance to pass by. It's a "me first, screw you" kind of attitude.

Vietnam government hit high tax on imported cars, So cars in Vietnam will be more expensive 3 times than the same in Thailand & indonesia, Also I not agree when you said " Vietnam's roads are designed for bicycle traffic," that is misinformation , Vietnam road is small because lack of management & it very expensive land value in Hanoi, So open road you will cost more money to compensation

@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
What I meant about the roads being made for bicycles is the old roads. Many of the Vietnamese neighborhoods and streets are over 1000 years old. Back then, only people and carts really existed. Later on when bicycles were invented, that was the main method of transportation for a very long time. So many of the roads being built back then only thought about people, carts, and bicycyles because cars didn't exist and/or were impossible to own. Narrow roads built after cars became available to the public fits the description you gave about land prices and lack of management. What do you think about the government trying to ban all motorbikes in Hanoi by 2030? It seems impossible...
