This ride was filmed in Hanoi, Vietnam on a Saturday afternoon around 12pm. Some parts of Hanoi can experience heavy traffic on Saturdays, but the route my Grab driver took was mostly clear so we were able to zoom through the city relatively quickly.
Normally during the weekday rush hour, a 17-minute ride like this can become 45 minutes or longer.
I was riding on the back of a GRAB motorbike. GRAB is a ride-share service, just like Uber. It's the main way I commute around Hanoi.
In this video, you'll see what normal traffic looks like, including lots of honking and lots of traffic violations. This is a normal day in the life of those who live in Vietnam.

LOL to the 2 thumbs down just a few minutes after I uploaded the video. hahahahaha Anyway, here's another motorbike riding video in the streets of Hanoi. I will be uploading food videos soon, but as you know, my channel isn't just about food, it's also about culture and exploration. I hope these walking & motorbike videos give you an insight into life in Vietnam because this is how it really is here on the streets, every single day. Thanks for watching and all your support! Love you all!

I think Cory, there are trolls going to KZfaq and not just yours, and just going to each video and hitting thumbs down.

That would be kind of interesting, but I don't speak Vietnamese so it would be very difficult to arrange something like this.

Yep, it has been happening for years. Trolls and bots just go and auto-dislike videos to lessen the chance that they are shared or recommended across KZfaq. I'm already at 7 thumbs down on this video, I'm sure some are legit by people who genuinely don't like it. But I feel the 2 thumbs down I received within 1 minute of uploading my video were trolls or bots. I'm used to this from YouTubing for 6+ years now, but it is always annoying each time it happens.

I wonder how they set up auto-dislike. I mean there are videos of puppies and kittens, beautiful horses, and you'll see dislike! I mean REALLY??! It's ridiculous!

hehehe Yeah, it is intimidating for those who have never seen driving conditions like this before. I do want to point out that this is very light traffic. It is 100 times worse during rush hour. I'm hoping to film a video about that soon. You might have to have a brown paper bag and a handful of Xanax nearby when watching the rush hour video. haha

Wow! I love 💗 this maybe you could start making more videos like these too. Do you have to buy insurance when you own your own scooter or mortorcycle? Do scooters get stolen a lot when parked?Also I was wondering can you tell us about all of the different holidays that the Vietnamese celebrate through out the year? 😻😍
@CoryMay81

I will share motorbike riding videos from time to time, including walking videos as well. I haven't uploaded a food video in a while, so I need to get back into making more content like that, since many of my viewers follow me for those types of videos. It's hard to please everyone, though. hehe I really don't know about vehicle insurance here, so I can't answer your question. Theft happens sometimes, which is why many parking areas have a security guy that watches your bike. Also, many people lock their wheel with a steel lock or heavy chain when they park their vehicles outside over night. In most cases, Vietnamese park their motorcycles inside the 1st floor of their home, so it's safe indoors. I would like to make a video about the holidays here, but it would take some time and research to make a proper video about it. I'll consider your suggestion. ^^

Your very nice post reminded me of two great films where riding on motorcycles or mopeds is part of the storyline. Caro Diario is a film by Nanni Moretti and the first segment is named "On my Vespa". The second film, Close-Up, is by the late Iranian director named Abbas Kiarostami and has a beautifully filmed sequence of two men driving on a motorcycle (with one of them carrying a very large chrysanthemum flower).

Noticed people beeped a lot through that roundabout at the beginning. I think I get it now why traffic like this is always so noisy, you need to hear all the other people coming from all different directions.....or maybe people just like using their horns lol I dunno. Great video.

The last 3 days, Hanoi had massive rain and thunderstorms at night time. It was pretty cold then! But in the daytime, it is sunny and everything heats up, so it gets hot again. But not hot like summer. hehehe I think very soon the weather is going to shift full time to cooler weather, and then cold weather for the winter season. I don't mind cold weather, but I'm not looking forward to the grey skies every day. T_T

Did you have any plan to buy your own bike ? Since you'd been staying for sometime here. How did you manage your own insurance such as medical or personal insurance ?
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 жыл бұрын
No, I have no motorcycle driving experience, and learning to drive in the densest motorcycle traffic in the world is not the ideal place for a beginner. I'd rather pay the $1.00 to a Grab driver who has been driving for many years. hehe Expats can purchase insurance online through various agencies and many full-time jobs offer health insurance coverage for their employees. I'm not sure how an expat would buy health insurance in this country though if they don't have coverage from their employers. Many don't have insurance, like me. We make due, though. Vietnam's hospitals and pharmacies are relatively cheap, and you can get almost any kind of medication OTC from pharmacies without prescriptions.

How's the weather these days and is it always gloomy or just once in awhile?
@CoryMay81

Yeah this day was overcast with clouds. Northern Vietnam's winters are pretty grey for many months. Currently, Hanoi is experiencing cooler autumn weather, but on sunny days it still gets pretty hot. Very soon, it will transition into cold weather every day until the end of February or mid-March.

It doesn't seem too polluted, but trust me, the air quality in Hanoi is terrible. Some days it's so hazy/smoggy that you can't see tall buildings in the distance. I tend to stay home on those days, and almost every Vietnamese person will wear masks during that time. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I deleted the unnecessary comment from that other person. Anyway, there are signs, it's just many people don't obey the signs. Sometimes it's hard to even see the signs when you're too busy looking at all the people and trying to avoid getting into an accident. But, everyone knows the rules of the road and it seems chaotic, but there's a flow to it. It takes some time getting used to. hehe

Yeah, I saw some article the other day saying Vietnam has well over 20 traffic-related deaths per day, and the majority of them are motorcycle drivers. It's the second highest traffic fatality rate in Southeast Asia, behind Thailand. I'm not sure what the accuracy is of those articles. Yeah, there are some people driving Mercedes Benz and other fancy cars, usually like complete dickheads, but not everyone. More times than not, those people drive like self-entitled pricks as if they were king of the road. But, this kind of also applies to "most" cars in general. It's just the way it is here.

hehe Yeah, trucks are more common now. You see a lot of Toyota ones like in the video that you pointed out, and sometimes Chevy Avalanches with the short bed and extended cab. Quite a lot of SUVs with a 4x4 sports look, with full gear rack on top, floodlights, motorized winch on the front bumper, and even a snorkel for submerged driving. I wonder if those trucks or SUVs have ever actually been off-roading in the countryside because they're absolutely clean and scratch-free. lol

Many of the neighborhoods in Hanoi were established long before cars even existed. Bicycles were the main way people got around for a very long time until motorbikes were invented. All the narrow streets and alleys are perfect for bicycles and motorbikes, but now that cars are everywhere, it's just a giant cluster f*ck.
