Cost of living in Ghana 🇬🇭, cost of living in Gambia , cost of living in Africa. How much you need to live for a year in Africa
So first of all rent in Africa is mostly paid upfront for the first year and Accommodation is one of the major things that take almost 50 % of the cost of living in any African country Therefore knowing how to save money on accommodation and staying within your budget is really important. So After doing a research on about rent in 25 major African countries I realized the average cost of rent in a decent community or neighborhood is around 300$- 400$per month which is an average of $4,800 a year . Don’t get me wrong You can actually find cheaper houses for rent based on the location. This cost of rent is based on the properties in the main cities ,Therefore if you want to save almost half of the annual rent cost then you can live outside the main cities .
Now When it comes to utilities most people don’t pay attention to it but it’s one of the things that can make living in Africa really pricey . The average monthly cost of electricity , water and garbage in an apartment at a decent location in any African country can cost you about $50 per month .
Now remember internet services in Africa are mostly pay as you go and are not subscription base therefore you can pay for the number of MBPS you intend to use but if you want an unlimited internet service you will be paying an average cost of $60 per month..
so looking at the sum of all your utilities bills you are likely going to pay 110$ per month which is an average cost of $1300 per year .
The cost of transportation in Africa is something we cannot over look because you will need it for all your errands. Especially when you decide to go the big cities and towns for your appointments and personal assignments.we have public transportations which is government owned , there are taxis and share rides like Uber . Depending on your preference Uber and taxis can expensive if you use them everyday . The average cost of an Uber or taxi in Africa is approximately $8. So assuming you use Uber and taxis every day for a year which you won’t but let’s assume you do then you will probably spend about $2000 on transportations .
Now this the most important thing on the list today because we all need it to survive and that is food .. food in Africa can really be cheap if you eat local or you go for grocery shopping and prepare your own food . Trying to eat at restaurants can cost you a lot of money if you do it always . If it’s a single person a grocery shopping of $100 a month or less can be very reasonable which is $1200 a year ..
So in conclusion you will be spending an average of $4800 on rent ,
1300$ on utilities,
$2000 on transportation
And lastly $1200 on
Food .
In total you will be spending an average of $9300 per year . This average cost can either go Low or high depending on the African country you choose to move to and also the city or two you chooses to live in or just your spending habits can also play a role in either the price going up or down . Therefore know your budget and plan base on that . ..

This is close enough ball park......for urban living. I feel you should do one for rural living as well...where one would be growing much of own subsistence food on the farm! Otherwise, welcome breakdown.

actually, in the Gambia you can get an apartment paying $100 dollars a month. It all depends on budgeting. That price you mentioned can be beat you just have to....have skills. 😀🙂cook your own food, do your own hair, nails, establish a side business. For me, I make gorgeous beaded jewelry by the hundreds. I am also a hairdresser and an excellent cook & baker. My fiance' works at the clinic and has invested in a huge industrial grill he thinks he's "King Fisherman" lol so if you have creative skills this will save you money. The Gambia is a place to live comfortable and at peace. Not to get rich off poor people

I just read that the average annual income in Rwanda is $400. That's a long way from the $9,000 needed to live. Even in Ghana it's $2,200 and there's only one doctor for every 26,000 people. Still way below the poverty line.

Excellent video as always Mr.B. I agree with your analysis and breakdown 80%. However I have noticed a couple of discrepancies. Rent and accommodation: I stayed in Uganda for 3 months and rented a 2 bedroom House. It cost me 200 USD per month. This was in 2018. I was staying in the northern part of Uganda in a nice 2nd Tier city called Gulu which would be equivalent to a city like cape coast. I would say that you don't have to pay 300 US Dollars per month unless you want more luxury. The house that I rented was excellent and had a lot of space. Guess what? 200 dollars will also allow you to rent a large apartment Bamenda Cameroon. These things really vary from country to country. So for me here is the rule. Africa has 3 renting price ranges. 1. Low Cost 80 - 150 USD 2. Mid Range 150 - 250 USD 3. High Range 300 - 450 USD I need to also mention that the neighborhood was very safe and clean and there are no waste removal fees. In the capital city Kampala you can find decent accommodations in safe neighborhoods for as low as 150 per month. Food: Local food in Uganda is very cheap. In fact, its even cheaper than Ghana. Its literally possible to live in Ugandan 2nd Tier cities for 10 USD a day and be comfortable as a single with no dependents. Street food costs 1 - 1.50 USD for a meal or 6-7 cedis for a heavy meal. Lol. Eat at a small local restaurant and you can expect to pay 2-3 USD per meal and that includes a drink! Lol. If you cook your own food at home then it will cost you roughly 75 USD to feed a single person. Uganda is very amazing and it won't break your bank account. However Mr.B, Uganda doesn't have an equivalent of Jolof rice. Lol. But they have similar foods to fufu and stuff. Transportation: Lastly, I will touch on Transportation. Its very cheap in Uganda. Uganda is one of the few remaining "okada" countries. But over there they are called bodas. They are everywhere and people use them more than taxis. Taxis are used but bodas are cheaper and therefore more popular. There are buses in Kampala on certain routes but once you leave Kampala and Entebbe it becomes an okada country. 75 cents takes you s distance of 3 kilometers. You are traveling up and down for less than 5 USD for the day. In greater Accra you can spend more than 25 cedis on 1 trip. Lol. So I used to take them all the time and it cost me roughly 50 dollars a month moving around in gulu. Uber doesn't exist in that part of Uganda and I'm glad. Lol. I could go on but I just wanted to give you an idea. You really did well. However I would say that the 300 dollar a month mark sounds a bit expensive to me. Countries like CAR, Cameroon, Uganda, Burundi and more have great accommodations within their capital cities in safe neighborhoods for far less. But after reviewing your breakdown I think you got in right that 10k will allow a single person from the West to live very comfortable in many African countries. Just avoid East Legon or the Kotoka Airport area. Lol. 😎 peace

@@kierabrookes9018 I traveled to Uganda 4 times. I have an adventurer Spirit and the places I'm talking about are in the northern part of the country. The region is called Gulu which borders on South Sudan. A lot of these prices are not advertised because they are "local" prices for the masses not tourists. And even now they still hold. If you are staying in Entebbe or Kampala then add about 10% more. But it depends.
