Could These Names Ruin the New Women's Hockey League?

The PWHL is preparing for its training camps and roster formation. Many fans were waiting and hoping for more information on team names and logos, with the official "colors" already known since Draft Day.
However, when reporting revealed that the PWHL Holdings LLC had filed for trademarks - the names requested were made public. Reactions have been, frankly, horrible. Could this make or break the brand new women's hockey league?

The fact that almost anyone, if given 15 seconds can come up with a better names at the top of their head is ridiculous. For example: Athenas, Medusas, Valkries But really, they are trying to cement a legacy here that will last for years. So why not have the players decide? These women, starting from nothing, will play a full season together. I believe that at the end of the season each captain should come forward and annouce to the media: "so me and the girls have been talking for a few weeks, and we decided on this name" And than, in some 13 years, you could have some touching moment like: The last original member of the Ottawa Vixen's is playing her last match today.

As much as these names are terrible, they are throwbacks to nuances in those cities. Wicked used to be popular slang in Boston IIRC, and the New York Sound could be either a callback to the old marshes or the sound of traffic and people in the city. Terrible names iirc

MLS mostly have absurd names, logos, and uniforms. Yet it is still in operation.

Why can’t they keep the names from the previous defunct league. Ie Boston Pride, Montreal Canadettes. Keep the name north stars for Minnesota.

I don't haaaate Wicked as a name but only because it's something a bit different... but then I'm not a PWHL player and won't have to listen to the same 3 jokes about the musical for the rest of my career. All the other ones I find horrendous. Bland, sanded, marketing names, so inoffensive that noone will like them. Maybe they didn't want any "Shamrockettes" and just went wildly in the opposite direction.

These names are so bad. I hate the trend of singular nouns as team names, for every good one (Kraken) there's a dozen wtf ones and these six all fall squarely in the WTF category.

Sounds like they’re using the singular names to kind of copy the WNBA but the WNBA names are fine somehow, whereas these are just absolutely terrible.

Definitely need better names. They need some NHL type marketing, some guys to come up with cool names & logos. New York Red Foxes. Toronto Loons. Boston Coven. Minnesota Monarchs. Ottawa Senatrix. Montreal White Pines.

The Riveters with that Rosie Riveter logo is absolute fire for a women’s sports team, sucks they didn’t use it.

Names are terrible. I was getting excited about this new league and rivalry’s being established etc but these names sound like they come from a local bowling league! Such a turn off! Rethink please!!

Theyd be better off using the same or similar names to the nhl teams of the cities they're in like the nfl did with the mlb in their beginning

Montreal Echo is awesome. I like Ottawa Alert. And I like Superior (but whitecaps is better). Toronto Fury sucks Toronto Six sucks Toronto Torch sucks Toronto Huskies sucks Wicked is pretty stupid. Very Mighty Ducks of Anaheim gimmicky sounding. Riveters, Pride and Beauts are garbage. Like deal-breaker bad. Those names are so bad I would never buy merchandise, that's how bad those names are. Also the PWHL logo is BADDDDD. BUT...I have hopes for the jerseys and logos still. And the on ice product is going to be great. 👍

Nope haven’t had a chance, but last time I watched womens hockey there was at one be point 4 gals in one penalty box and 3 in the other ALL for the same infraction. Now you tell me that’s a good rule?

You might want to check out some of the highlights of the physical play and hitting. It's been outstanding. Also a rule to release your player from penalty box if team scores shorthanded, 3 pts for RW, 2 for OTW, 1 for OTL. Five round shootout and same player can shoot multiple times. Some innovative stuff.

jeezuz who is running the marketing and promotions? you want interest and merch sales. no one will want merch with crappy logos or names. the women deserve better

Why would you ever publish irresponsible hyperbole like this!? Do you wish for the endeavor to fail!? Good luck to this league I hope they make it past the beginning stages and make it into the fabric of professional sports. These names cannot be realistic choices. Let’s go Girls! 🏒 make it work

If you check my channel, I've promoted and supported the league. I'm excited and hopeful that it will be a huge success. This video just addressed an issue that came up for fans and to me was a bad move if the league wants to use those names. Crossed fingers they will pick better options!
