I dont think that DCS models L band radar that both the AWAKS and the 31 would have. Although they cant really develop a firing solution with an L band because resolution is too coarse the Awaks operators would immediately know that its a stealth aircraft from the differential radar band returns and probably know its a pack of F22 based on the speed. There is a really good chance that the Mig31 would disengage or loft the missiles and guide them with their L band capacity. If you can get the missiles close enough for the active seeker to work this might be a different story. I think DCS cant model this as I have described

Against that sort of range, the F-15s were in a hard spot. Going cold was really the only option, then maybe flipping around real quick to take a couple shots before going cold again. Let that data link do its job. If DCS modelled jamming realistically, that might have also been a huge factor. F-15EXs have huge AESA radars, and I assume they double as powerful jammers, same as what the F-35 does.

Great Video. Considering this is a good scenario of what might happen over Ukraine you might want to consider adding a few E/A-18G Growlers out of Poland to protect the AWACS. The USN has a squadron of Growlers in Poland for electronic counter-measures. I believe the Growlers could help the USAF defeat the R-37Ms long enough for F-15EXs to get the job done.

F-15EX could potentially do the job of Growlers with only minimal systems integration and slapping on the appropriate pods as needed. It would actually do the EW job much better than a Growler because of more capable standard hardware such as mission computer, EPAWSS, radar, etc. Also it would have enough stores capacity to be adequately armed even in an EW configuration. EF-111 successor?

@@stupidburp The F-15EX is for air dominance. It is in no way built for EW. The F-15 platform is not suited for this. Otherwise, I am sure that they would have made one.
@stupidburp
@stupidburp Жыл бұрын
@Roger Werneburg Jr. F-15C was built for air superiority. F-15E was built for ground strikes in contested airspace. F-15EX was built for cost effective support of stealth fighters. Note that the USAF has only shown interest in two seaters. This is to enable the flexibility for each aircraft to be used for a variety of tasks like a multitool. Fire support as a missile truck is one. Peace time visual range interceptions of unresponsive mostly civilian aircraft is another. Close range direct control if drones like loyal wingman is yet another task. My suggestion to use it as an EW platform fits in to that flexibility of use. Being derived from a highly capable air to air platform allows it to continue to have that capability too, whether for self protection while focusing on other tasks or as a primary use with these other uses as options. F-16 used to be the workhorse platform of choice because of lower cost of operations. Longer range, larger load capacity, and more volume for radar snd electronic warfare is the new necessity. That or stealth and sacrifice firepower, flexibility, and cost. A mix of stealth fighters and large utility fighters is the way forward. Leveraging a platform with excellent air to air record as a utility fighter makes sense. It was done before with the F-4, then F-16, and now the F-15.

Wouldn't the US AWACS pilots turn cold and dive down onto the deck once their radar detected the Russian missiles coming at them? The F-15s would lose some or all of their AWACS targeting but the AWACS is a large value target and needs to run for cover if need be.

What's the old saying? Amateur's think about tactics, professionals think about logistics. Something to that effect. Can't remember where I heard that but it makes sense. That high tech missile is worthless unless the delivery vehicle can get there. In flight refuel planning, keeping the spare parts where the fast movers are, and even something as simple a food and water to keep your valued humanoids alive has to be considered. In Desert Storm the most valuable ground unit were the water buffalos the army brought. Without them, you got no army. There was that one story about the platoon of Abrams that were stopped by lack of filters for their turbines. The sand storms ate up their supply of filters and they couldn't move forward until new ones arrived. They were changing them every hour.

Roll over, pop flare & chaff pull hard nose down, break left or right coming out 5-10k feet lower an 90 degrees to your original vector then you can break back towards the shooter. Just have to make the missile bleed kinetic energy till it’s slower than you. If you time the start of the maneuver right, the missile will try to track but fall out of the sky, sideways, away from you trying to change vector but failing miserably.

I mean, realistically, no AF planner is going to let the NATO awacs sit out there, relying solely on the F-15's to show up and save the day. That E3 would have bugged out and headed SW or west as fast as it can go. Its way to valuable an aircraft to risk. As well, NATO would be pushing tankers east to support its fighters. Those would be juicy alternative targets for the Migs.

Real time SAT view would see the 9 MIG-31 moved at airbases to the ready line. NATO would launch 2 F-15 EX with 8 missiles and 2 fuel tanks for escort of the E-3. Once the MIGS were on radar the F-15 would turn nose on and stay nose cold. The E-3 would bug out away from the MIG-31.

Very simple if there was possible aerial threat, the E-3 would have either EA-18G or EC-130H laying down electronic jamming preventing the MiG-31 from gaining a long range lock Forcing it come in to range of defending F-15EX whose AESA can also disrupt the MIG-31 Zaslon with ease Secondly the USAF would conduct counter air operations by launching ADM-160s and having them use their Signature Augmentation Subsystem (SAS) to create electronic decoy of E-3 to draw out MIG-31s while F-22s approach in stealth and smoke them

So, I had a question based upon a response I saw in Quora that brought an existing tech to my attention. Is there any way to model Pandarra Fog with US Navy vessels? It's literally a smoke screen deployable from US Navy ships that acts as a visual, IR, and radar obscurant. From what I've read, it literally absorbs the radar waves from missile seekers. I imagine it's not 100% or even 75% effective at absorbing all the radar waves, but if employed like the similar IR smoke on tanks, it could cause a missile to break lock if the ships deploy the fog screens when they detect inbound missiles.

@@ivand5699 yeah but the phoenix's give it the extra range that they wanted to play around with using the aim-260 they are currently working on but isn't finished yet so it's trading being in an f-15 for having longer range weapons and radar (might not be right on radar due to their f-15 being a modernization mashup) i also think that the tomcat might be able to get up to speed quicker because it's full load isn't as non-aerodynamic as what their f-15 was carrying, it might also be able to get faster because of that though that might be a stretch, unless they make a super-tomcat mashup in the same vein as the f-15 they used in the video.

@Gabriel_McMillan
@Gabriel_McMillan Жыл бұрын
The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a B1-R full of AIM-260s. Or maybe it's full of LRASM? Who can say? It can go Mach 2.2, and it's got the range for an AWACS defense or an AWACS sniping mission. What a perfect answer to the Mig-31s. In that scenario' i'd suggest having F-22s way out ahead of the B1-R, the idea being to keep them outside of the range where Mig-31s or AWACS could lock on to them, but also far enough ahead that they could fire on the Mig-31s before the Mig-31s can fire on the B1-R, and to sort of cover the B1-R's escape. Or... we could wait until Cap models the B-21. Does anyone know what the top speed for it is supposed to be? Sec Def said it essentially had global range without the need for aerial refueling, which makes me wonder how they did that. He also said it had a high speed at high altitude, but did not elaborate.
@Gabriel_McMillan
@Gabriel_McMillan Жыл бұрын
@@alexandermoorehead3200 Trouble with the B1-R is, would it be based close enough to assist a US AWACS? Could you just have one loitering around if needed to defend an AWACS? Maybe not. @@alexandermoorehead3200 Essentially the same trouble with the F-22 though, as with the B1-R, unfortunately. Love the video as always, thanks! And as normal, I'm providing my humble input and comments below. As of ~11:30 into the video. I can't prove it, but I've always had the impression these missiles are over-modeled (since I first saw them perform in DCS). I think if they were this effective, we'd hear about it a whole lot more. For example, I know the Ukrainian war isn't huge on air-to-air battles, but I've read nothing about this missile besides the recent article stating Mig-31s were shooting them from range across the border. I've read way more about the PL-15 and Chinese missiles in development over the past year which included quotes from US military leadership, so I tend to use that as a general guide. The same goes for hypersonic weapons as another example, where there's a lot of coverage of those out of fear of Russian/Chinese hypersonic capabilities. However, besides my general speculation on the efficacy of the missile, I believe there's a simpler explanation for the range issue encountered here. I would certainly think any NATO AWACs in the air would be accompanied by a quick reaction force already in the air flying a circuit close by. I don't believe the US or NATO would put one of those valuable strategic assets at risk near a warzone without their own escort close enough to properly defend their AWACs if it did come under threat. From their perspective, even if they are close to the UA border, over the sea, and even west of UA, there certainly isn't a guarantee that Russian forces in the air, in the sea, or from land (long-range missiles) will not attack them, either on purpose or by mistake. On the other hand, I understand why you set the jets out there, as adding a race to the battle area is a fun engagement.
@rebelliousfew
@rebelliousfew Жыл бұрын
I don’t believe the R-37M Is over-modeled by any means. And the reason why you don’t hear of such air-kills with this missile over Ukraine, Is simply because the media, mainly Western and Ukrainian, does their best to censor stuff like this out from the internet. So, basically, this missile Is actually extremely effective, especially In larger numbers where the kill rate Is much higher. And, even If NATO had a QRF ready to defend the AWACS, If you put about 12 MIG-31’s In the air from Sevastopol, you could most certainly land at least one shot on the AWACS, so, either way, NATO needs to be extremely cautious of this threat, and that’s not counting the S-400 sites.
