Datalink is everything. I think the reasons you see F35Cs grouped with Super Hornets on carriers, and F35As grouped with F15Es (example being the 48th Fighter Wing at Lakenheath) is so the F35s can go ahead of their non-stealthy aircraft and provide information via datalink. It doesn't matter then that the F35s can only carry 4 x missiles, their team mates can go in full murder config and fire off at datalinked targets without being detected themselves. It's quite something.
@brobsonmontey
@brobsonmontey Жыл бұрын
☝☝ This. ☝☝ One of the value points of the F-35 is it's ability to have one aircraft act as a mini-AWACS, forwarding targeting information to other F-35s and F-18's acting as missile trucks. Further, F-35s will (in the near future) also be accompanied by UAVs (e.g. Loyal Wingman) whereby a solo F-35 acts as AWACS + command & control for missile carrying UAVs - this means a single pilot (single F-35 with UAVs) could engage a large number of opponents. In the F-35 simulations done to date, this capability has been an ignored deciding factor.

Silly question from a guy that dosnt know much: Would the use of the radar from a stealthy plane like an f-35 make that aircraft visible to enemy radar? I remember reading about the f-117 “stealth fighter”. They used all thermal imagery to find their targets at night because use of radar would give them them away. Can someone here clear this up for me? I’m thinking of a submarine using active sonar. It shows them what they need to see, but also gives there position away.

they are indeed designed to shoot with the radar not emitting, even if there are no datalinked ally nearby. Their passive RWRs are good enough and fused into fire control allowing for weapons-quality bearing track, and the AESA radar only needs to blip a pencil beam once (split second) to get a quick range data and calculate launch envelope. Good enough for a Fox 3 shot. And then there's DAS allowing 360 deg IR track.. yes the future of BVR is indeed scary.

Tom Clancy theorized this in Debt of Honor. AWACS with targeting radar as well as search radar. Interesting concept.
@valuedhumanoid6574
@valuedhumanoid6574 Жыл бұрын
If you ever read the Tom Clancy book Debt of Honor, the Japanese Air Force took American technology, altered it and vastly improved it, and used it against the US. Their AWAC's not only used its search radar to find the targets, they then turned on tracking and fire control to steer AMRAAMs that were blind fired by F-15Js. The launching platforms stayed nose cold the entire time. Of course it is fiction, but with all Clancy novels his fiction is firmly rooted in real life technology. It is so accurate that the Pentagon launched an investigation into his novel Red Storm Rising because of how frightenly accurate his novels were. Turns out that he used public domain info and extrapolated a logical scenario. Just like GR does with these "what if" missions. Just use your imagination on top of your knowledge base and voilà, there you are!

In the beginning, the discussion of US involvement and doing some brainstorming is good. But, to answer your question, US and NATO have supplied weapons openly to Ukraine including missiles (HARMS) which have led to Russian losses. In addition, US ISR assets in the form of manned planes and surveillance drones have been up nearly 24/7 (such as the RQ-4 Global Hawk flying around the Black Sea and manned USAF EW jets flying circuits SW of Ukraine over Romania). It's sort of an open secret that US wire and signal intelligence is providing Ukraine with information on ammunition dumps, Russian naval assets, fuel depots, infrastructure/transportation hubs, and even the location of Russian generals throughout the war (especially with HIMARS). What we're witnessing is just a percentage of the US intelligence network providing real gains which have been honed by fighting terrorist networks for decades now. In a full-scale war against the US, the amount of data the US would have at their disposal is simply incredible and would result in enemy losses and friendly lives saved on a daily basis. Imagine that full-scale intelligence apparatus, conventional forces, special forces, NATO partners, and then add the US Navy and US air superiority. Only a fool would WANT TO face that in a war.

No, an AWACS would be tracking the enemy plane from 250+ miles sending target data to the aircraft carrying the air-to-air missile. The fighter aircraft wouldn't have to go nose hot at all (unlike this sim) just launch the missile after the right launch parameters have been met. Of course computing on board the AWACS would be predicting where the target aircraft will be at intercept and will steer the remote AIM-120D there - not at the aircraft's current position - which would be silly.

The Canadians are dropping Superhornet AN/APG-79 (V)4 radars and radomes into 36 its 94 CF-18s. They bought AIM-120D in 2017 (and were criticized for buying a missile which is limited by the jets radar) and will reach IOC with AIM-9X Block II next year. All 94 have just undergone HEP-1(Hornet Extension Project). JSOW is also quite the capability for the Canadians. The CF-18 will now serve through 2032(as the last of their 88 CF-35As are delivered), 50 years after it began operations with RCAF.

I think the beauty of the old avionics software on legacy fighters could be that it is rather crude and easy to master software wise (example: today one guy can re-create an old SNES Game in a few days compared to a whole company taking months to do it 30 years ago). or on the hardware level, a rasberry pi having magnitudes more computer power than the whole plane and thus could easily "translate" between new and old. it should definitely be do-able to jury-rig modern missiles into the old planes, if you have people on hand that still know about the old systems.

Yes, in war time this stuff can be jerry-rigged pretty quickly. I wouldn't let the Ukrainians do it though - I'd hand over a complete package on an encrypted device - let the Ukrainians do the mechanical installation only - too much corruption over there - any technology sharing would also be shared with Moscow and Beijing pretty damn quick.

IF I remember right, also Gripen is, or is supposed to be, able to fire missiles trough datalink... But dunno if that works with awacs, or if it does always need another "gripen" to show target.. (?) At least they can PICK targets from that link, but dont know does that need radar on in the airplane that shoots that target. Same thing with new Saa anti-ship missiles I think, and they can ofc targeted by ground forces also. (preprogrammed flightpath mode),

It seems like the main limiting factor is what we’re willing to let Russia get its hands on. Any tech we give them could end up getting captured if shot down, misfired or even from successful use. We’re probably OK losing 30-year old HARMs but probably not an AIM-120D.

AIM-120D is already behind the curve - the US put all it's eggs in the stealth basket and made a very expensive omelette. They desperately need Meteor NOW - but are scared to purchase it as AIM-260 would be cancelled.

Loyal wingman is a system that can take sensors eg Radar, EW, IR, etc and place them on UCAV's The replacement for the Growler is going to be 3 loyal wingman with the growler systems spread over the 3 aircraft using electro optics/space for communications. Starlink will be the biggest game changer and will end up replacing AEW&C's. AUKUS! les go son! 💪💪💪 NGAD, Tempest and Ghost Bat.

As other people have said there's already US AWACs around Ukraine. But they're pretty certainly just being used for a kind of indirect support role; what they see and hear is being passed on to Ukrainian forces. I don't think there's any chance of them being used to actively direct missiles even if all the other technical hurdles were overcome. It'd be a much more active role in the war (even though our current role is really debatably 'passive') and even though Putin's use of nukes is pretty certainly an incredibly dumb bluff I don't think the US wants to open up its AWACs to getting R-37s thrown at them. Not to mention Russia is doing plenty shittily even without the US guiding missiles to planes.

@@fulcrum2951 Things have moved on massively, real-time RADAR (and IR) return data-processing is a massive game changer. Processing 10 seconds worth of RADAR return data looking for tiny constants would have taken a 500 ton football-pitch-sized computer installation a week in 1990 burning a hundred kilowatts of energy per hour, this processing power is now real-time, will fit in a cigarette packet and burn perhaps 40 watts. This is why stealth is dead and it’s also why we carry on offshoring our technology to China at our peril. RADAR stealth is dead - pointless expense and complexity. If you haven't worked out the military industry is about selling ideas and making money first and foremost then that's why you don't get it. Minimising your RCS is sensible - anything beyond that now has a massive levels of diminished returns (‘scuse the pun) for dollars spent. You’d be far, far better off having more airframes, pilots and better, smarter weapons - and drones. Simple single task drones not like the money-pits the US and British defence industries are wasting billions on - we’re repeating the F-22/F-35 mistake with drones!

Cap, I don’t think the Hercules will have a AIM120D/AIM260 ‘rapid dragon’ capability, it’s still not survivable enough given the stand-off range isn’t long enough compared to the palletised JASM-ER etc Rapid Dragon trials. I believe a smarter use of the cargo planes would be to launch half a dozen or so loyal wingman drones from stand-off range that are fighter setup with the AIM120/260 or even Half Rams they are developing and have them launch midway to target. And a couple of F35 loitering in closer to guide them

During WW2 if the US hadn’t dropped the nukes on Japan, the original plan was a full on invasion of the mainland. I wonder if you guys could simulate that somehow? 🤔 At the time Japan still had TONS of aircraft and would have kamikaze all of the incoming ships carrying the soon to be invading Allie’s. Resulting deaths would’ve been catastrophic.
@crabluva
@crabluva Жыл бұрын
Japan didn't have any aviators or the fuel to get their planes off the ground. The planning for the invasion was based around suppression of enemy air defense, which would be completely filling the sky with flak. I don't know what there would be to simulate...the Grim Reapers would get shot down a lot and destroy a decent amount of AA. Japan didn't have many aircraft by summer 1945...check your sources again. They didn't even have many aviation instructors left. The Cape Gloucester Campaign was the last time the Japanese used aviation effectively I believe? Once Rabul was neutralized that was the end of the IJN. Raids on Rabaul would be really interesting. There was actually a "reverse Pearl Harbor" there, with half a dozen irreplaceable ships being sunk.

Given India's issue with the simpler older RADAR onboard SU-30 (it simply doesn't work as a fighter RADAR above mach 1!) and the fact the Russians couldn't fix it leaving the IAF in the do do (which is what really lead to India dropping out of SU-57) the likelihood of SU-35s RADAR being much good is slim. China have invested heavily in Russian technology - the result? In a red flag with Thailand, Thai Gripens wiped the floor with the Chinese in BVR engagements - 42-0 - and that's with relatively hopeless block C AMRAAM. Being Russian, DCS pretends all this junk actually works - great for gaming but not for real war.
