The gaokao is the college entrance exam that Chinese high school students take to get into their desired college. CCTV America took some questions from this year's exam and asked our colleagues -- Could you pass the gaokao??? Watch it here:

This is seriously a very bad depiction of the Chinese gaokao. It's a test that people spend fifteen hrs a day preparing for their entire high school careers. It's crazy. Literally none of these people would last through the first day of this exam.

Lmao these are like the easiest questions in the Gaokao. The level of difficulty in the actual thing reaches the point where I wouldn't be able to do a single question. The ones in this video were ridiculously easy for me, just to give some perspective on how hard GaoKao is.

The Gaokao is patently unfair; it depends on where you live. Different provinces have different Gaokaos, and especially in richer areas, the Gaokao is easier. Also, depending on where you come from, your chances of getting into university are better. So say you live in Tianjin (a very urban, industrialized city) - your Gaokao scores don't need to be as high as someone who lives in Chengdu (less prosperous) to get into the same university. But unfortunately, you need to have hukou (residency) in order to take the Tianjin Gaokao. This puts urbanites and middle-upper class Chinese students at a huge advantage, and rural, poorer Chinese students at a huge disadvantage. It is a case study in structural inequality in China.

It is unfair, but it is more fair than any other system. In Europe, patronage was passed down from lineage (power was passed down by bloodline). During the 600s in China they figured out a way to keep competent people in rule of the country, so they created exams to test the merit of its citizens to hold position in office. Obviously the rich had an advantage by being able to send their children to better schools, but there were peasants who became the rulers that controlled an entire country. In a country that's as large as China, you need a standardised way of doing things. Of course its unfair but its the best you've got. There is this saying, if someone is twice as intelligent as you, then work three times harder.
@tthtlc

so obviously unfair, as so many people had commented. but without any proper measurable yardsticks to compare one exam against another, it is really very difficult to qualify/quantify this "difficultness" differences. but since majority people here can see the unfairness, but not those in the city itself - you can perhaps guessed that quality of the decision makers in those city is the result of the exam itself -> inferior?

In cartoon 1; the left boy received a kiss for getting a 100, whereas, the right boy received a slap for gettin 55 Cartoon 2; the left boy received a slap for getting 98 and the right got a kiss for 61 The cartoon shows the importance of progress and improvement as the boy on the right, despite receiving a relatively low grade, is happy as he improved from his first test, whereas, the boy on the right is sad because he knows he has regressed as he did worse than his first test, even though his second test is nearly perfect.

The question of picture cartoon is talked about, progress is important, is like be better than before. first question about ceramic industry, if you are think logicly, answer A, B and C it's more logical but, remember it's china with their communist party who influenced every china aspect. The answer will be always to favour china party policy first rather your logic as human.
@edukid1984
@edukid1984 3 жыл бұрын
Er, the answer is D. favourable national policies not because of examiners "always to favour China party policy". It's because in the short passage it was already stated clearly that Foshan (in Guangdong province) began to boom as a ceramics manufacturing centre *in the 1980s* - i.e., around the time China began its economic Reform and Opening Up in earnest, with Shenzhen special economic zone and its surrounding cities incl. Foshan leading the way. To well-read Chinese students this is common knowledge which should logically come to mind at once when they read this question.

If we were to fairly judge gaokao, we would have to compare it with other educational curriculums on a global scale such as IB, IGCSE , O and A levels, SAT, SSCL and view the outcome of the graduates. Graduates of British curriculum or American curriculum or even Indian curriculum or IB curriculum end up in the surviving zone of their of lives but most gaokao graduates end up in the struggling zone and some of them don't even make it through the basic fundamental life survival skills thus ending up being completely dependant on their parents' saving so why even consider studying it when the outcome of many is very clear. It's not that Chinese students don't have any other choices. They are used to following the footsteps of one successor, hoping that they would succeed too. I've lived in this country long enough to understand how the concept of education works and it's a SHAM.

The math is not harder than the SAT (based on that one sample question) let alone the SAT math subject tests or AP calculus tests. The first question seemed totally random and I wonder if the translation missed something. In the USA our students have a truly hellish HS junior year, with AP classes and tests, PSAT, SAT (which many retake maybe more than once), and SAT subject tests. Then the college application involves a life history, essays, and recommendations. Perhaps our system is worse than China's. In either system, limited places in the most desirable colleges are distributed to many more students who want in, so most cannot attend their first choice college.
@someoneawesome8660
@someoneawesome8660 5 жыл бұрын
Those sample questions are the easiest questions in the Gaokao. Gaokao starts off with easy questions then increases the difficulty level by level until the level where it is designed to not be solvable.
@3forte
@3forte 5 жыл бұрын
I think the USA system is actually more fair in judging a student's eligibility. Interviews, essays, and the look of a student's overall school career are taken into consideration. Like Harvard's secretive process is said to take into consideration extra curricular activities and such, so even a student with "nothing too special" grades can get in. But China's Gaokao system... the final test score is the end all be all in judgement.
