The test is super hard because there just so much nice universities meaning that you can't just be smart, you have to be THE smartest. Also in Chinese culture, getting into college is everything, no college = no job = a life if sufferings. They also have the police force surrounding the testing buildings tie make sure that nobody cheats.

@David Malcolm matter of perspective, I think most people will agree that the key to a fulfilling life is a certain amount of hardship. Studies have shown after interviewing the world's most successful people from athletes, CEO's and entrepreneurs that they felt happiest when they were achieving something that was previously thought impossible for them. In other words, this type of insane exam would be like a very worthwhile challenge to those who want to test their mettle academically. Also something for people to compare themselves to. For example, top lawyers don't really care how much they get paid, they just care that they are getting paid more than their rivals within the firm. Competition to prove yourself has been ingrained in the story of humanity since the beginning of time. Heracles 12 labours is just one example. Olympics is another modern example. Of course, not everyone is up for such challenges, which is why there are 'normal' universities, and 'normal' jobs that people can take. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
@popinzxcv
@popinzxcv 5 жыл бұрын
@David Malcolm I agree with you, but I don't think its as hellish as you believe. It seems to be a unique aspect of Chinese culture ever since the world's first meritocratic exam was created to push every child to be an academic. They are obsessed with the possibility that there child may be a huge success through an exam. The traditional Imperial exam would guarantee you a prestigious job for a lifetime. But it's not that simple, being successful nowadays has always needed many other attributes combined. there are those in China that still become successful without getting amazing scores in the 'Gaokao'. I believe the main drive for these kids, parents and everyone else going through these tough exams is a matter of prestige. It gives your parents something to brag about, something for you to write on your resume etc. I won't deny that it is very hard to get into the best Universities of China, but that doesn't mean if you don't get in you're subjected to poverty. It just means you'll find it much harder to enter into jobs. But its the same anywhere, if you don't have the name brand of your Uni, you need to be creative in getting some work experience, extra-curriculars to get an advantage over your peers.

The sad truth is these tests are not for the elite, its not to find the best, but its a means of control, a way to make the poor fight for something in some way. These tests are a way for the absolute poorest of the poor to rise above their station. That girl with the dad who made 180 yuan a day pulling a fucking bike. for her family, her success in this test will let her leave the life of a poor farmer. And for that they are willing to spend everything.

As a Chinese who studies at US now I can tell it is how it is in China. Because there're too many people competing, and it is considered as a life mattered thing cuz many people are poor and this is like the only chance for them to change their lives and compete equally. Even though it's brutal, you have to deal with it. Cuz better college = better jobs and salary. However I don't fit in that system well so luckily my parents sent me to US.

octopus4000 Yes I think maybe there will have a better solution coming out in the future but currently ppl have to go through this system. Yes it’s super competitive but that’s how life works especially when u live in a country with a huge population. But I hope that our gov would come up with better alternative so that ppl don’t have to live their lives based on one single exam.

linkinmetalica Don’t make conclusions so fast. I didn’t say that university is the only factor that influence ur work. What I meant is higher education provides u more opportunities. Yes, there certainly are many ppl who don’t have degrees and get their jobs. But it must be some good reasons behind, like u said, their work experience or their talents, etc. But don’t u think if ur an employer looking at many applicants with similar backgrounds. The one who went to Ivy schools is more likely to catch ur attentions? Cuz that means this person has the ability to learn things well and may have a great potential. And even some research show that ppl with higher education tend to have more income. But that’s definitely not the only thing that matters.

@user-mk000

@@directorlunchie2322 Kid, US SAT exam is way easier than Gaokao exam. Don't you know that Gaokao exam is one of the toughest exam in this world. They can only appear once in their lifetime. Also, your English sucks as well. If you talk about Harvard, only brilliant and smart students get admission there but still it's not difficult to enter in different colleges. But for China this exam will decide which college they'd study and the person who failed no chance for them.This is the reason you see lot of rich Chinese kids studying in US and some western countries. And poor people can't afford to go abroad.

I've definitely learned a lot about the importance, as well as stress, of this exam. Periods aren't something we can just avoid or turn off with a switch. So hearing that the school brings in doctors to talk to the girls about their periods and ways to avoid them as well as minimize bowel movements seemed extreme. Pls keep the conversation going on improving the educational system. It is unrealistic to assume the productivity of knowledge workers can improve in efficiency or effectiveness by breaking their hearts and minds in the process of learning...widely accepted literature on increasing human capital strongly discourages this standardization of learning that rips you from creating valuable knowledge but instead forces you to spill out what is in your head.. China is an incredible country and I truly believe it will not stale in this system and people also hold the educational system to account for not increasing their capabilities/way of teaching/stucture for all their students that sacrifice everything for this exam.

Kura Pika Haha, flasks are common hot water containers used in China, not necessarily a symbol of good luck. People in China has get used to consume hot water as a good practice to kill germs. The tap water was believed not safe to drink because of less well filtered, sterilized, or purified in China. I am not sure if the water sanitation has been improve significantly recently or not. The practice of drink water fresh out the tap water may still not common in China. Another reason that hot water is preferred in China may associate with the benefit of warm up the stomach. Chinese people like hot water just as Americans like ice water.

That's why we hate Gaokao but we really need Gaokao, a nearly absolutely equal way for students whoever he's poor or rich. Mostly in China, the fees for higher education is extremly low and governments will help you when family is just too poor to afford. If you go to a good uni, it will be easier to find a good job. If you learn by reading out loud, then it`s supposedly help you to remember things better. Act of reading and speaking text aloud is a more effective way to remember information than reading it silently or just hearing it read aloud. The dual effect of both speaking and hearing helps encode the memory more strongly. This way of studying isn't for everyone. I can`t focus like that myself I am more of an visual learner. One interesting but sad thing is that when I went back to my hometown Songjiang, Shanghai this summer and visited my high school teacher, he told me now in Songjiang or Shanghai, this Gaokao is no longer valued as much as what we used to do 10 years ago, especially for wealthy family. Reason is simple, wealthy family has strong social relationship and financial resource that their kids have many more opportunities other than Gaokao. But this will never be the case for poor family. BTW, back 10 years ago when I took Gaokao, even rich kids and family also treated Gaokao seriously.

Actually memorization must not be put into a shameful act of learning. In fact, memorization is just a step towards understanding a concept. I believe understanding is more important than memorization yet you still need to memorize at least. Read Bloom's taxonomy and you will see there what I'm trying to point out. You can't connect different points if you don't know the nature of these points. Sometimes all it takes is to rotely memorize first the points as dry as they are then try to understand them once you connect two or more points leading towards understanding.

ikr I am going to take the sat tomorrow (I live in the us) and I was worrying and complaining about taking the test but I feel that after seeing this, complaining about the SAT is an offense to these students. They works so much harder than me and the test they're taking is so much harder than the SAT. Watching stuff like this does make you look at this in a new perspective.

@@cilanatroisbetterthanparsley Thanks :) I actually kind of feel confident about my SAT. I want to get at least 1400 and the highest I've gotten on a test is 1460 so I feel pretty good about it. But I feel like after watching these students who spend years to study for one exam (I studied for two and a half months) I feel like complaining about the SAT kind of makes me seem ungrateful in a way (idk how to put it) but thank you for your support though ;)

Aashish Bagdi english is hard for Chinese kids since they really have no need for it in real life unlike math and many never get the chance to talk to a real English speaking person:/ I remember watching a video on KZfaq about American guys in China looking for bathrooms and none of the Chinese people knew the word “bathroom”, they only learnt “toilet” in school. Delighted could be one the the words that’s more difficult for them since it’s just plain dry memorization. Thanks for correcting the typo

everyone keeps on saying “if you go to a top tier university, you will get a good job” but no one mentions if your performance in university matters in china. if you graduate at the top of your class at a second tier university wouldn’t that look better than doing poorly in a first tier university?

They really don't look that closely tho. For the US we relax in high school and buckle down in College. Otherway around in China, on top of that the university name matters much more than their rank at said university.

This documentary reminded my GAO KAO time back in China. Those 3 years in high school were intense. It helped me forming studying discipline, but I don’t remember a lot of knowledge I tried so hard to memorize. This is why I appreciate the western education, not about hard memorization to score high points on the exams, but truest understand what we are learning, the meaning of education. In fact, I love attending school in the U.S. and went for graduate school and got my MBA degree. I don’t think I’ll ever have the same appreciation of education if I were finishing my undergraduate in China...

shawn sun thanks for your opinion. I agree with there’s a lot of memorizing in U.S. higher education , but the objective was to gain an understanding of what you are memorizing which makes memorizing easier, and meaningful, and ultimately such memorization turns into understanding that I won’t forget about in two weeks after the course is over.

I wouldn’t classify it as “some exam”. The exam determines whether they go to a good university, get a good job, have lots of money, become successful, and even have a good marriage.
@inevespace
@inevespace 3 жыл бұрын
@@toujoursjaden But in fact it is just some exam. And it is very strange that your success is connected to things which are not related with your real contribution to society. Getting education is not contribution to society. You get good job not because you study well, but because of your real skills are useful for employer. It is very rare that higher education give you this skills. This is why employers don't want hire people without working experience after university. You need to teach them again. It means that education itself is not very useful for employer. I live in China and for me it looks like this system still works because society is developing. It will change gradually when more and more people get higher education. Market is not very competitive in China if you look closely. Employers can afford to have employee who was good at education but just ok now.

This is just one of the most extreme cases in China. I live in a big city. School ends at 4:30. I went to the US for a school trip during term time for a month, went to shopping or cinema after school, entered the top 10 uni without the college entrance exam and had a 8 months vacation before going to the uni. In Beijing or Shanghai, the situation is even better.
