I’m very glad to hear you cover this information, Dr. Tabor. I am neither a Christian nor a Messianic, but there is a messianic group called Zadok Way that explains well how the calendar was intercalated. They are not a scholarly group, but their research is worth listening to. Also, I am wondering if you have listened to the lecture by Dr. Rachel Elior which she gave at the Chicago University School of Divinity. Every DSS scholar should hear her presentation, it is a fresh and fascinating perspective on the Qumran Community and the Priestly Calendar.

Very interesting presentation. A few points: 1) On the ark, Noah determined the start of the new year without a barley harvest to go by. 2) There are numerous Sabbath and Lev 23 Holy Day keeping Christian churches who use an observed luni/solar calendar. Some go by Jerusalem observation, some US groups go by US mainland observation. This presents a difficulty: is the time meant to be observed locally in every town, or in one location for all to follow. In the latter case, when the observation is done in the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere observers do not keep the holy days in season, as required by Scripture.

Margaret Barker believed that a solar calendar was used in the First Temple, before the importation of the Babylonian lunar months, and so the solar calendar was seen as more "pure" and original by sectarian groups who saw the Second Temple as flawed.

Hi professor Tabor, I don't know if you will get to read this but you should! The Jewish calendar was a relic of the mesopotamian calendars of the Sumerians. It was based on the Triple Saros lunar cycle which is in perfect synch with the cosmos (Book of Daniel confirms these lunar time scales as well as the Jewish Temple architecture and also Genesis). This lunar knowledge was not common knowledge even though the tools to work it out were contained in their scriptures. It was actually based on a 28 day biblical lunar month. The 29.5 day lunar month you talk about is actually an optical illusion caused by the SUN that makes it appear like a lunar month of 29.5 days simply because you are measuring it from one lunation (optical illusion) to the next lunation (optical illusion). It's earth time as opposed to the cosmic time of the Saros lunar cycles. It's the reason it appears out of synch with the SUN. During a lunation the Sun has moved forward in its own orbit and so has the earth but this means that for the moon to replicate the same lunation (optical illusion) it needs to travel a bit further around the earth to align correctly between the two. The ancient calendar would work on 13 months of 28 days giving 364 days and still have 7 leap years throughout the 18 year Saros period. Every 54 years it would synchronise very closely to within 33 mins and be marked each 18 years by an unmistakable perfect lunar eclipse. There were many other planetary mid way indicators to monitor these cycles as well as the position of the moon within the zodiac constellations which would also have matched 13 months and the 13 tribes of Israel. I don't know why the Saros was dropped in favour of lunations but it seems big changes happened in Mesopotamia around 1100bce with the Babylonians and Marduk who introduced Jupiter instead of the Moon as the way to track time. Abraham was a sumerian from UR so his skill was lunar astronomy from around 2100bce.

If we compare the first three days of creation with the last three days of creation, we discover that the author (Assumingly Musha aka Moses) has divided the six days into two separate blocks. The first block of three days describes the act of separating the heavens and the arets aka earth while the second block of three days describes the act of filling the heavens and the arets. Day 1 - Separating light and darkness. The first block of three days describes the act of separating the shamayim aka heavens and the arets while the second block of three days describes the act of filling the shamayim and the arets. Day 1 - Separating light and darkness. - 1st block Day 2 - Separating water and sky. - 1st block Day 3 - Separating the land from water. - 1st block Day 4 - Filling the light with the sun and the darkness with the moon. - 2nd block Day 5 - Filling water with fish and the skies with birds. - 2nd block Day 6 - Filling the land with plants and animals. - 2nd block Day 1 is about the separating of the light and darkness and day 4, its parallel, is about the filling of the light and darkness with the sun, moon and stars etc. Day 2 is about the separating of the water and the sky and day 5 is about the filling of the water with fish and the sky with birds etc. Day 3 is about the separating of the land from the water and day 6 is about the filling of the land with plants and animals etc. The first chapter of Barashith/Genesis, and the rest of Scripture for that matter, must be interpreted according to the Ancient Hebrews style of writing (poetry and block logic) and not from our own modern style of writing (prose and step logic). To summarize, the Ancient Hebrews did not believe in a flat arets or a spherical arets. From their perspective, the arets was what they could see from the land's end to the land's end and their concept of the world or universe was interpreted from this perspective. Continuing on, Day 2 - Separating water and sky. Day 3 - Separating the land from water. Day 4 - Filling the light with the sun and the darkness with the moon. Day 5 - Filling water with fish and the skies with birds etc. Day 6 - Filling the arets/land with plants and animals etc.

I had a thought about the leap year correction. Maybe the calendar kind of auto corrected since they also used their own sun dial that showed when it was an equinox or solstice. Since they didn't actually count precisely 24 hours, they would get up with the sun, not really knowing if it was a little more than 24 hours. Today we are obsessed with being exact, even more so in the age of computers. As long as they got the first day of the year right, it will average out and no need for a leap year. I only see references to the third hour of the day, never that it was 6:23 am. I'm sure someone else could present this better, but that's the gist of what I'm thinking.

I counted at least 18 different calendars in the DSS and some do absolutely use the moon.

Clearly the Bible establishes the phases of the moon as the SIGN for Gods Sabbaths, quite similar to the Babylonian calendar. The Republic of Rome also had a lunar calendar (and an 8 day week with no sabbaths) until Caesar changed the cornerstone of their months. So how did Israel go from observing Sabbaths anchored to the sanctification of New Moon as its cornerstone according to a lunar calendar codified by God beginning in Exodus 12, to a floating sabbath (in relation to the lunar cornerstone) created by Caesar and anchored to the Solar calendar he created as the Cornerstone of the Dragon-Beast? Do you think that might be related to Daniel 7:25 (he would calculate to change the times and laws) and the "beginning" of the "times of the gentiles" which clearly has its END in relationship to the Kingdom of God BEGINNING?

The "solar year" recounted herein is the Gregorian estimated year versus the astronomically observed year which is closer to 365.2424 days. Check this.

Wow ... not sure why Dr. Tabor would follow the moon calendar with its crazy calculations. The Zadok/Enoch/Jubiliees solar calendar makes so much more sense and syncs with the priestly family calendar for Temple service in Book of Chronicles 24. Even Monte Judah is looking into the Enoch calendar. To each his own.

When does a new month period begin? The major differences we see are based on the starting day for a new month. Many are using the Islamic "sighted crescent," which was begun by Anan Ben David in Babylon in the year 767. His new sect was called the Karaites. The sighting of a crescent shows the fully-built first day of a new month, however the confusion about the starting point is caused by misunderstanding the difference in the Hebrew words KODESH and YERAK. A "New YERAK" is not ever the intended idea, because that would imply a different object, not a different period/cycle (KODESH). Let the Moon (YERAK) be the object we see in the sky, and the month be the period/cycle (KODESH), and the misunderstandings will clear up.

How did the Essene Calendar start the Year ALWAYS on Wednesday (Fourth day of Gregorian calendar) whilst at the same time using March Equinox to mark the beginning of their first month (Nisan) each year? .. Since the Equinox doesn't fall on Wednesday every year constantly. Anyone could explain this controversy .. please.

First of all it's a LUNAR calendar to mark the months . This is very different from our solar and not very accurate marking days. In essence it's a feminine nearly accurate to menstruation timing . Religiosity is keeping patterns of rituals . Ritual is not necessarily the same as spirituality which breaks on through some rituals . Like Easter sometimes overlaps passover.essenes a little closer to 365 with 360 and 354 of traditional Jewish calendar. But notice the continuous circularity which later we discovered is not caused by circularity but by elliptical orbit . Looking for synchronicity with the light and planets is a delimiting notion of God . Like he God couldn't be present at any time or isn't present until your group calls all to his ever presence . ? A little ecclesiastical pride.. ? The light does shine in the darkness . Human organizational ritual maybe coordinated and synchronous but miss the point. Further confusion occurs in our time with 2 moon months .

Did the Essenes predict Israel to become a nation in 1948? Obviously God said this would happen through Ezekiel, but I heard the Essenes figured it would be 1948 but I can’t confirm this anywhere.

The whole calendar is dependent on finding the first day of the calendar year! Depending on which calendar you use will dictate weather or not you are meeting YHWH on His APPOINTMENTS!

35:44 The simple calendar with 2 rules, that works forever and won't get out of synch. 1) first sighting of the new moon is the 1st day of the new month, 2) observe the barley and if it's clearly not going to be ripe enough to harvest in a couple weeks, add the 13th month intercalation that is necessary every few years. I believe this is correct and is reflected in the name of the 1st month Aviv/Abib (Exodus 13:3-4). The Hebrew word aviv refers to the ripeness of the barley in Ex. 9:31 and is translated "in the ear" (KJV) ["And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was bolled" (Ex. 9:31)]

Why not the Zadok calendar who God used to be the time keepers and watchers of his covenant of the ark as well as his temple? They were of the Levite class.

Or just follow the Barley!! The Barley Harvest starts the year. Mount Carmel is named after this process. When barley is "Karmel" it is ready to be harvested and passover begins.

So, before Babylon, I believe, was a 360 day year and the year started astronomically. There are certain star groups and constellations at the time of the 2 equinoxes that can be observed. Moses learned this in Egypt and Israel learned this again in Babylon. Solar time, Lunar time and 360 do not evenly divide by 7. If the Biblical calendar was kept as We keep time ( Dec. 31 and the next day is Jan. 01), then the regular sabbaths do not land on the same day of the week the next year, since there are days left to count at the end of the year before the next year. The regular sabbaths matched ( day of or day after) the festival sabbaths except for Yon Kippur, the 10th. Days were ignored until the starting of the year at the equinoxes, then all the 7's match up. Passover the 14 is a multiple of 7. The current calendar, as you stated, was the Solar-Lunar calendar coming out of Babylon and the festival days move around on our Julian/Gregorian calendar, i.e. Passover one year is Tuesday and another year is Thursday and at the time of Jesus death it was Saturday. But, thanks to stabilizing the calendar by Rabbi Hillel in 311 A.D. astronomical timing stopped. The Jubilee calendar could have easily not started until the equinox every so many years by ignoring a day or two.

The Gregorian calendar is fixed to the equinoxes not the stars. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, by your 72nf birthday, or so, your stars will have moved about a degree of arc.

It's my opinion -- or suspicion, really -- that there was an earlier solar calendar in use by the author of the part of Genesis in which the "begats" from Adam to Noah add up to 1,656 years (i.e. the Flood being after Noah's 600th year). You'll notice that 1656 = 72 x 23. The number of DAYS in 1,656 years is 604,800 -- the same as the number of SECONDS in one WEEK (i.e. Creation Week). In such a calendar, an average year is 365 and 5/23rds days long, so that every 23 years there are 8,400 days = 1,200 weeks. Since the Earth precesses by 1 degree every 72 years, then between Creation and the Flood (i.e. in the Antediluvian Age) the Earth precessed 23 degrees, about the same number of degrees constituting the tilt of the Earth's axis from that of the Ecliptic. There is an odd passage in Daniel regarding "2,300 days" which perhaps is a remnant of this Creation-era calendar, where each 'day' is prophetic of one actual year. If you add the 1,656 years from Creation to the Flood to 2,300 years, you wind up with 3,956 years: perhaps the author of Daniel believed that 2,300 years after the Flood was when the 'End of Days' was scheduled (by God) to culminate. It would be nice to know when that author -- if this was what he was implying -- thought the Flood actually happened. My guess is that the 3,956-year combined period of 172 cycles of 23 years was thought to end sometime in the 1st Century BCE . . . but that's just my guess. How would such a 23-year cycle pan out, divided into Months, Weeks, Days, etc.? Did they have 365 days per year for 23 years, topped off with an intercalary 5-day period? Did they have 364 days per year, topped off with an intercalary 28-day period? Notice that 364 days can be divided into 4 seasons of 30 + 30 + 31 = 91 days (i.e. the JUBILEES calendar used by the Qumran community) -- OR, it could be divided into 13 'months' of 28 days, so that the intercalary period of 28 days would be an intercalary 'month', with there being a total of 300 such 'months' in 8,400 days = 23 years: i.e. 13 'months' x 28 days-per-month x 23 years = 299 months [+ one 300th 'month' of 28 days]. In chapter 7 of Maurice Chatelain's 1975 book "OUR ANCESTORS CAME FROM OUTER SPACE" he argues for there having once been a division of the Zodiac into 13 constellations (not 12), with the 13th constellation being the 'Triangle' between Virgo and Leo. Chatelain has each of these 13 divisions of the Zodiac represent 27.69 degrees [i.e. 27.6923076923 degrees] and 28.09 days [i.e. 28.0955537523 days]. That last figure would be 28.09364548 days in an average year of a 23-year cycle. This can be reconciled easier with whole numbers by having a 4-week = 28-day 'month', with 13 of such months in every year except for Year 23, in which you intercalate an extra 14th month for a total of (13 x 23 = 299) + 1 = 300 months = 28 x 300 = 8,400 days = 23 years. Whether or not the 23-year = 8,400-day cycle was actually used by some of the Genesis authors (and 'Daniel'), it's hard to argue against a calendar tying the number of seconds-per-week to the days-per-'age' (antediluvian), and the fact that such a cycle would be comprised of 1,200 weeks -- the number '12' being so significant to Israel, as is the 7-day week, with the final factor ['100'] being 10 squared (i.e. 10 Commandments, etc.]. Keep in mind that 23 tropical years [i.e. 23 x 365.24219878] is 8,400.57057194 days, which is 0.57057194 days = 13 hours 41 minutes 37.415616 seconds more than 8,400 days in 23 years, or 0.024807475 days every year [i.e. 35 minutes 43.36589634 seconds per year]. That's about 1 day's discrepancy every 40 years [every 40.31042957 years, to be exact]. That passage in Daniel regarding "2,300 days" -- if it is, indeed, referring to 2,300 years, or 100 of those 23-year cycles, would come to 840,000 days, which is just a hair more than 28,445 synodic months, where each synodic month is 29.53058796 days: 28,445.0821344 months to be exact. This amounts to 28,445 months + 2 days 25 minutes 31.71764546 seconds. If one were to define a 'calendrical' synodic month as 29.53067323 days instead (i.e. 7.3672416 seconds off from the actual figure), then there would be exactly 28,445 such months in 2,300 years = 840,000 days. Not a bad bit of mathematics for people in an age without Casio calculators!

If YHWH designed the sun and moon to be time keepers, he could have done anything (I assume). So he could have made the time for the moon to orbit the earth exactly 30 days, and the time for the earth to orbit the sun exactly 12 times 30 = 360 days. I wonder why he didn't?

I've followed the same Jubilees/Torah 12 chodeshim, ("moonth" comes from the "new moon" "kalends/calendar" system of the Romans.) 364-day, 52 Sabbaths system since 2014 and it works GREAT! All through the Scriptures all chodeshim and all days are numbered! According to King David, (Psalm 90:13) numbering the days brings one's heart to Wisdom! We are to learn this system! The "Sons of Zadok" 364-day system found among the Dead Sea Scrolls are in complete compliance with the instructions of YHWH (Yahu) because there are NO days named to honor (serve/worship) any of the nation's false "planet" gods, (Ex 20:3-6, Ex 23:13, Deut 5:7-10) all of which are named after "the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven" which you have to "lift up your eyes unto heaven" to see. (Deut 4:19.) Moses warned Israel that this is "wickedness in the sight of Yahu your Alohe" and that it is "transgressing His Covenant". All those that have "gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or the moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have NOT commanded", then that "man or that woman" was to be brought forth because they "committed that wicked thing" and the people were to take them to the gates and "stone them with stones, till they die." (Deut 17:2-5) Pretty serious violation of Yahu's Covenant I'd say. And if you thought these abominations were long forgotten read what will happen in the future to all "the bones of the kings of Judah", and Judah's "princes", "priests", "prophets", all "the inhabitants of Jerusalem", and all the places where they have been "driven", when they're taken "out of their graves" according to Jer 8:1-3: "And they shall spread them [their bones] before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshiped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for refuse upon the face of the earth. And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the rest of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places where I have driven them, says Yahu of Hosts." OUCH! This is still going to happen to all those who practiced this wickedness! I'm sure glad I found out about the Dead Sea Scrolls/Jubilees "Sons of Light" 364-day system in these end days, and that I'm not one like "all the rest of them that REMAIN of this EVIL family [observance of the "host of heaven" makes one part of an "evil family."] which REMAIN IN ALL THE PLACES WHERE I HAVE DRIVEN THEM." Firstly there are 2 Gospels. The gospel of the kingdom of heaven on Earth (the thousand year reign of Christ from Jerusalem) that was preached to only the Jews at Christ's first coming. The Gospel of Salvation by Grace through faith that was preached to Gentiles by Apostle Paul (Romans 11:13 > For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles). The expression "petering out" or "to peter out" is derived from the transition of Peter's gospel to Paul's gospel. Paul's gospel is applicable to both gentiles and Jews (as during the age of grace, all are saved by grace through faith in Christ). In fact Peter acknowledges in Acts 15:10-11 > "Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we (Jews) shall be saved, even as they (gentiles)". James in Acts 15: 18-20> "Known unto God are all HIS works from the beginning of the world. Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood." [God's plan for salvation of also the gentiles was a mystery hidden in God until it was revealed through Paul] Colossians 1:26-27 > the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. The Babylonians, who didn't sanctify new moon days, began their months with the sighting of the first sliver of the month. This corresponds to the day AFTER new moons for Israel. Therefore the Babylonian "sabbaths" fell on the 7th, 14, 21st and 28th of every month followed by an UNSANCTIFIED day or two until the next new month begins. But the Bible tells us that the sabbaths of Israel ALL fell on the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th of every month (with two special exceptions) because new moons were SANCTIFIED APART from weekdays and approximately every other month would be a TWO DAY NEW MOON FESTIVAL set aside from weekdays. We see David and Jonathan observing such a two day new moon planned in advance in 1 Sam. 20 for example. So Israel and Babylon observed the same lunar SIGNS of the moon for their sabbaths (the 1/4 moons and full moons) but they numbered them differently because Israel was required to SANCTIFY the new moon as the 1st day (when no light is seen) which ends with the first sliver on new moon which begins the 1st weekday for both Babylon and Israel.

New moons are observed only at eclipses. A solar eclipse happens only at the exact minute of the new moon. However, the first visible crescent as seen by sharp eyed youths, is the new moon determinant in Muslim countries. The solar AND lunar understanding is necessary to predict eclipses.

I think the ideal calendar would involve five day weeks instead of seven. The Sabbath days should alternate between the fifth day and the first day. So we would work eight days and have two days off and earn double for working on Sabbath days. That would mean there would be six weeks in each month instead of four, which would mean more pay periods to pay our bills with. The extra five days at the end of the year would be a Sabbath Week of five days and then we would occasionally have a six day Sabbath New Year’s week based on the frequency of the actual irrational number. Now THAT would be a solar calendar. The lunar and stellar realities out of sync with it by nature would then color each day with orientation on the same irrational number basis. I like the number seven. There are seven holes in my head. There are seven seas. And once there were seven planets but we seem to have lost count. The rest is history and tradition we don’t all agree on and which may seem irrelevant in a billion years. I would like my descendants to be alive at that time. The conflicting calendars of the past need to be simplified with a conversion table so we can study history with accuracy. The fact that Jewish sects changed calendars over time is part of the fascinating color of history but historians need to know when things happened relative to other cultural occurrences. Someone needs to develop some really good software for a Universal calendar conversion program.
