Definitely needs to be a Volume 3. Instead, I’ll name some names. First and foremost, Leon Rhodes, Clint Strong, Jon Conley, Keith Sewell, Joe Manuel, Barry Bales, Dino Strunk, Randall George, Shane Sutton, Bob Williams, Dan Agee, Bobby Blackburn, Matt Hanshaw, Grant Moody, etc. Some of these guys I’ve worked with in Nashville, and some from Branson MO. I know I’m missing some, but the ones I’ve mentioned, I would put against any on Volume one, and Volume two.

Joe Manuel and Clint Strong both played for Merle Haggard. Joe ended up playing rhythm for George Strait until George retired. Granted Clint was more jazz focued. Joe was a shredder back in his hay day and can be heard on the Manuel Bros, MOE D and The Texas Jamm Band. Also, how can any list be complete without Roy Clark?
@CiscoDuck
@CiscoDuck 2 жыл бұрын
Joe Manuel was a "shredder"? Joe couldn't shred cheese in the kitchen, let alone play any of Hag's stock guitar licks and riffs from his greatest songs. He was an 'ok' rhythm player in Strait's 'Ace In The Hole' band but before that he wasn't half the rhythm player that Bobby Wayne or Merle himself was in the Strangers. And when Joe was there Merle played more lead on his live shows than ever because the truth is he didn't have a lead guitarist in the band after Clint left until Redd come along. Joe Manuel is the WORST excuse for a lead guitarist who ever stepped foot on a stage having anything to do with Merle Haggard or anyone else associated with the Bakersfield Sound. Back in the 60's he wouldn't have been allowed to tote their cases let alone play. Shredder my ass - he's a hack!

Funny, you got two videos of chicken pickers and you don't have the slightest reference to the man who invented chicken pickin' back in the 40's down in L.A. coming straight off the front in Europe with Patton's 3rd Army, Mr. Jimmy Bryant he was the first and Roy Nichols was undoubtedly the 2nd playing around L.A. around the same time as a 16 year old lead guitarist in the Maddox Bros and Rose. I asked Roy where he heard that kind of pickin' and he told me. "From Jimmy Bryant playing at the Mule Kick Saloon on Lankersheim Blvd back in '47 - this was before Fender even made an electric guitar - he was playing a Gibson Super 400 with a D'armond Super Chief acoustic microphone pickup attached to the pickguard. I asked him, 'Where did you get that kind of pickin' from?' and he told me, 'From playing those same licks on my fiddle for years on tunes like 'Chicken Reel', I just converted the approach the guitar.' He's the 1st I ever heard doing it and I started doing it that day. Before that about all I played was stuff I learned from hearing records by gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt inspired licks and stuff I swiped from Junior Barnard and Jimmy Wyble who were two of Bob Wills Texas Playboys best lead guitarists. After Fender started making those Telecasters everybody started playing chicken pickin' and everybody was claiming to have invented it, but that's not so. Bryant did it first and I was there when he started doing it. He hadn't even met Speedy West yet, he said some little combo with a fiddle, bass and maybe another guitar player on rhythm. The McGuiness Brothers I think were part of his band, They started the Mule Kick and later sold it to Hank Penny. Bryant went with Cliffie Stone's band by then and he was playing all that chicken pickin' on the Dinner Bell Round-Up radio broadcast and later Hometown Jamboree and a slough of those records he and Seedy made on Capitol label."

Minor correction. It’s Lankershim Blvd. The famous Palomino club was also on Lankershim at 6907. Jimmy Bryant is also the first with this style in my memory. He was friends with some folks who liked what they heard and encouraged use of the style, guys like Audie Murphy, Cliffie Stone, Ken Nelson, and Scotty Turner for examples, guys with juice.
@CiscoDuck
@CiscoDuck Жыл бұрын
@@jameshepburn4631 Yeah, your right, the second 'e' doesn't belong in Lankershim Blvd. Not sire why I misspelled it. I know better. The Mule Kick Saloon was the same place that later became the infamous Palomino Club at the same address after Pat McGuiness sold the property at 6907 to Hank Penny who remodeled the place and turned it into 'The Pal' around 1950. Penny soaked a lot of money into it after it had sat in disrepair for about two years. When McGuiness acquired the property, it had previously been an auto repair shop if memory serves correctly or an auto dealership showroom. My dad played in that small combo with Jimmy Bryant at the Mule Kick when it first opened. He and 'Buddy' as Jimmy was called back then had both returned home from WWII after serving in Patton's 3rd Army in Europe where they both chewed some of the same dirt in Germany and the Battle of the Bulge. They were fellow soldiers who had a lot in common - they both were musicians who played more than one instrument and they both loved western swing and country jazz. Dad had learned to play those old Bob Wills fiddle tunes on his guitar and the mandolin and Jimmy had played them on his fiddle and mandolin and then switched to playing them on the guitar. Yep! Ivy J. Bryant had the juice!
