When you rake, pick the straightest/longest side and start doing rows, then do the “headlands” last in circles. This keeps you from running over windrows when turning around, and baling rows is better than circles.

Well done on showing the reality of a farming life. Most 'city slickers' just don't realise that regardless of how poorly you may be feeling, the farm life goes on - animals must be fed and cared for, chores must be done and next season prepared for by making hay, tending gardens etc. Hang in there Evan - you are an inspiration!

I have roughly 100 hours of mowing experience, from what I have learnt is that you want to start with your tractor on the edge of the field and the mower in the field, mow the whole field and do the furthest headland last because there is going to be the most rocks and sticks in closest to the trees that can damage the mower so badly that you could spend all day repairing the mower and not be able to cut it all in the day.

I have cut a lot of hay with a sickle mower. The first pass around the field needs to be in a clockwise direction. That will give you an indication of what is in the field and where to run the tractor on the next pass. After getting the first pass finished, turn around and go counter clockwise to mow out your tracks, then turn back around and do the third and following passes.

We're getting quite a kick out of watching you use the type of equipment we used 60yrs ago. Never imagined in my wildest dreams I see drone footage of old time haying. Cheers =^··^=

My dad was a farmer. He got hurt bad once...run over by his tractor. Survived with a broken collar bone, little pinky broken, and tire tracks up his back. A few days in the hospital and he was back doing chores on the farm! Farming can be dangerous. God bless and keep you.

I've cut thousands of acres of hay in my life, when you start a new piece go clock wise like that if there's anything in the grass along the trees the tractor will run over it, also if you hit something on the outside pass and break something the rest of your hay is already cut

Those mowers work better after the rust gets wore off. When finished oil the sickle bar with old motor oil to keep rust at bay.

Ok, hearing it’s a 9’ bar makes sense; it looked longer than my memory of the 7’ Ford we had. Given the tapering out of hay in the outside path, I’d have seriously considered putting my left side next to the edge and foregoing the outer swath. You’ll always have limbs and such out there and can take them out later with a bush hog. Watching, it was clear the hay was not shedding off your end bar. If it was that steep, that might be why, and you got it better when you bent it out. A few acres of hay will polish it up some too. Take a look and see if it needs some angle grinder polishing. One of the comments here and a couple from your earlier videos said to get the adjustments done to move the far end about 6” ahead of the near end. If you don’t have sway bars on your tractor, that’s probably why the outer end lags the inner - physics will swing the end back and the lift bars left. Getting it level helped. Check the outer 2-3 guard sections for wear, chips, and bends - that’s the source of most of your clogs. That’s good-looking hay! It might have been easier learning had it been a little thinner, but you gotta go with what you have. Drone footage was worth it!

Welcome to farming, hope you have some good neighbors like we had growing up. In 2000. My little brother got killed on a motorcycle and the neighborhood came and cut and houses 15 acres of tobacco. I hurt my back in april using a tiller in hard ground. suffered for a few weeks but better now. I am 78 years old and still try to do things my way....lol. Evan, you may need Rebecca to take a crash course in tractor driving. I know she can do it.

ICE!! Apply ice, 15 min. on, 15 min off. When I fell and hurt my back the ER Doc said to apply heat, I did and if anything it got worse. When I saw my chiropractor he told me NO heat, do ICE. That's when it started to improve. NICE looking hay, by the way!

As a kid we had an IH 300 and the speed was dependent on how heavy the crop was but you ran the motor at PTO speed and normally 3 gear around 4 1/2 mph in a normal crop. Heavy materials you just slowed ground speed until you were cutting it all with out tear out. The bar needs to be pitched forward just a little and the lower you can cut the easier time you will have. The sweep on the end just needs to move the material in enough to clear room for the mower gearbox. The closer to the root of the plant the less it can lay over. Wore many a blister on my butt from those old seats in the hot Sun 😁 Enjoyed the content 👍👍. We all rush make mistakes only experience can teach some things. Be safe.

I was just a little boy when we had a sickle mower back in the 1950s. The thing which use to drive my mother nuts was me riding on the fender while my dad was cutting hay. She hated me doing that as she was afraid I would fall off the tractor on to the cycle mower. I however, loved it. My dad and I were inseparable.

If you start cutting so you are driving over your back swath you can watch for objects in the back swath. We make 3-4 passes around then go back to cut the back swath. The back swath is almost always the worse grass to cut because of sticks and over hanging branches.

We mow out from hedge/trees first time around the field.then mow centre of field and then do the very outside sward lat.means if you break something on a branch or stone you have the field all done already!!

Literally found your channel because of this hay field of yours, was sad to see that you hadnt got to cut it yet just this morning. Now boom here is the video we have all waited for.

From what I can see from watching this episode and your earlier one when you sharpened your sickle sections, I'm from Nebraska Sandhill's and have mowed 1,000's of acres of hay with a sickle bar mower from IH, Kosch, to Rowse no matter the brand the concept is the same. You were right in sharpening your sickle sections and what ones you can and can't sharpen, but where you come up short is in your guards they are just as important to have sharp as the sections and from what I could see they all were wore out, along time ago they had replaceable leadger plates and now you can't get that type of guards. Yes it will cost you, but at the beginning of the season as part of our preseasoning of the mower we would replace all them no matter what the condition of them was and the ones that were in okay shape we'd keep to use up first as replacements as you broke them thru the summer. Next tip i can give you is you have to make sure the sickle bar is running down against the bottom edge of the guard, this is where the finger adjustment is important and you don't have the adjustable ones so you have to use a hammer on them to bend them down and there's also shim's under them. you don't want it to tight either but definitely not able to float up and not be against the bottom of the guard. Best way to explain it is think of it as a good pair of scissors the ones that are tight cut well the cheep ones that turn sideways don't cut! As far as speed anywhere from 3 to 4 1/2 mph is what we ran all depended on the grass we was cutting and how heavy it was!

Farm accidents happen so easily Evan and that is why you should always have someone else around when using farm machinery. An injured back is a real downer for a farmer so you have my sincere sympathies. Hope it gets better soon.
