Sheriff John Staley has over 20 years of law enforcement experience in Central Arkansas. His father and brother also work in law enforcement, so he has strong family ties to the criminal justice system. He is passionate about the Peers Achieving Collaborative Treatment (PACT) program in Lonoke County, which seeks to aid inmates battling addiction.
Sheriff Staley also gives his take on two major career events. In 2019, Sheriff Staley struck an inmate at Lonoke County Jail during a search, and footage of the incident was later released. Then in 2021, Sheriff Staley fired a sergeant who didn’t follow body-cam protocol when he approached a teen … who he later ended up shooting to death.
Sheriff Staley also talks about his work as an instructor for other law enforcement officers and shares stories about his time on the other side of the law.

Growing up as a pot smoking rebel I learned to hate cops. Once your on the radar when your young it's on site harassment anytime the cops see you. I'd learned to think of all cops as a idea or institution instead of ppl. When you dissociate individual humanity it's very easy to hate and be prejudiced. Years later I developed a pill turned dope habit. I ran from my home state and ended up in a conspiracy to break and enter a pharmacy. Down south outside trusty work crews are far more common. Aka the chain gang. Out of 10 different work crews representing 3 counties and 4 or 5 different towns and cities I ended up working with the same sheriff's who arrested me. The same bailiff who brought me in front of the judge. We'd get picked up at the jail and either go pick trash on highways or lawn/landscape work at local parks. I was shocked they didn't hold any I'll will towards me. After awhile when you get to know them individually there just ppl on the flip side of the coin. Where I would get my rush from dope, ducking the cops, or hitting a good lick they're rush comes from catching me or confiscating a bunch of drugs. We were all thrill seeking individuals. Of course there is the Gung ho super cops. The ones that think everyone who gets high is evil. However most just saw ppl who made mistakes. As long as you took your punishment like a man and didn't snitch your way out they could respect you. Many of them just looked at as a job. They would say it's just real life cops and robbers. Since you've made your job to commit crimes it's mine to stop you. As long as you respect them they respect you. I feel they should have more of these programs up north. Instead in Michigan you can only do outside work in suburban counties and even then it's only available to super minimum custody inmates. Like sentences 6mths or less for dui or weed possession. Misdemeanors only. When I was on the work crew I was doing 3 yrs on 2 felonies.

then they gotta start ratting out and prosecuting bad cops, start putting themselves to the hazard, start taking suspects ALIVE, and STOP pretending that police are infallible and above questioning. just because they have a badge does not mean they aren't beholden to the law. they're not some kind of "god-called ultimate arbiter of good and evil". you gotta face facts, entirely too many law enforcement officers have a power kink and took this job to be able to get their "fix" without fear of consequences.

I think you should just interview my local sheriff from genesee county Michigan. His name is Chris Swanson. I think he’s been great for the flint area. In 2020 with the riots everywhere, flint a violent city stayed peaceful. I think it had alot to do with our sheriff throwing down his riot gear and marching with the people. Most recently he’s working to get jellyroll to the jail for a visit.

I'll be honest, I didn't want to like the guy but by the end, outside a few things we might not agree on he seems overall like a fair person. That's the biggest thing I expect from police, especially those higher up, they need to remember that the public pays their salary and in his case, elects him too. I can disagree with a cop about everything under the sun but just treat me like a man and don't talk down to me because you know I can't really do anything, that's all I ask. If more police had this guy's attitude, public relations would be a lot better across the country than it is now.

This was a nice break from hearing stories from just one side. Maybe he was misjudged. I personally believe that any form of deception is wrong. Lying to a person about "who" would actually be arresting them based on their honesty is far beyond questionable. A young person who is terrified of being arrested and having a Sheriff tell them "its ok, be honest with me. "I" wont arrest you" while knowing that another officer will is wrong. This happened to me and I will always bent towards law enforcement.

I'm truly curious. Did you intentionally turn a blind eye to the video of Staley assaulting an inmate? What about his ongoing lawsuit for fraud where he claimed to have rehab'd a home renovation but it was found that he didn't? Staley's past is very rough and if you ask the right people, mainly people that aren't afraid of being fired by him or harrassed by his deputies... you'll quickly learn who he is.

Be a fire fighter. Make a lot more $ and work less as a fire fighter. Well here in Canada I.k you do. Had a buddy who's brother left the the job(cop) due to him seeing all the corruption in Toronto and had to sign off that the suspect/inmates weren't hit or beaten to get a confession and he was tired of covering n he said "I became a cop to help and serve NOT to be in a government gang". Now making maaaaad loot. As far as corruption goes whether it's a politician, cops n different branches in the government I feel most have great intentions and Wana be fare n do good for the ppl. NOW it's the ppl that have been in the buis else's in government I mentioned well they start to say "oh no govener this is the way we do things around here". And slowly warp the good intentioned person in to corruption then once they do that they can hold things against you.
