Video was shot in east London It’s about your journey through life and the obstacles it throws at you. The brief encounters with peoples who come in and go out of your life. The pram is where he could have had kids but carried on, the angry lady a bad relationship, the car he stopped for was when he stopped to look at himself in the Mirror (car Windows) the girl who checks him out was a brief fling he remembers fondly.

This is basically the national anthem of Britain by this point: You're just taking bumps in life trying to go against the stream. It takes intense focus and determination to not conform to the same old rat race that everyone else is in, but in trying to do so you're gonna take your lumps.

"Life has it's ups and downs." Amen to that! ;) Love the music, but never saw the video and never really paid attention to the words. I agree with your take on it. I think maybe the video is using walking the sidewalk as a metaphor for "the path you walk in life" ? (Like "life is a highway", "the walk of life", etc.) In the vid, he's crossing paths with people, but not connecting with anyone... because he's looking for "someone special" ? But - Maybe he's by-passing some good opportunities in the process? That's my take so far.

Wasnt filmed in New York thats the East End of London a section called Hoxton. The song is a sample of the song "The Last Time by The Rolling Stones. Also the video interpretation is that the people are the obstacles that one faces in life....Life, school, love, work, relationships and ultimately death. Like a song, life is a bittersweet symphony...

On the righteous brothers video you mentioned you’d like to stay in the 60’s. Try anything by the Four Tops. My personal favorite is Standing in the Shadows of Love. Start there and work your way through their catalog. Levi Stubbs has such a powerful voice. I think you will enjoy them very much.

I've assumed the bumping into people, and walking over the car is viscerally embodying the lyrics: "No change, I can't change, I can't change, I can't change," and "but I'm here in my mold, I am here in my mold. ... I can't change my mold, no, no, no, no, no, no, no" I agree with you about the 'heart' allusion (the places where all the veins meet). Life is bittersweet.

listen to REN - Bittersweet symphony. to break it down for y all, the main character is dealing with the struggle of being a common folk, ordinary but his destiny is something greater than that and he feels it inside so deep that it hurts. it hurts with every step he makes, every interaction. if you watch carefully he starts to walk exactly when the beat drops, then a WW golf almost hits him but barely misses him, passing behind him right then and there, meaning that he dodged a bullet on his first step in life. so that basically tells us that we are born to suffer or to be prone to odd chances of survival. if you see the sign behind it says "pedestrians left", he comes from the left, on foot. so he's not in a car, he's not benefiting of any circumstances favourable to his life, just walking like a simpleton, like the rest of us. Pedestrians. we're all that on the road of life. then he hits the road with the right foot, he's dressed in black, the WW behind him is also black. then he starts on a journey of cynism where he doesn't give a F about human interactions because they re all fake bullshit and superficial. nobody really cares about you. he bumps into people who dont pay attention to the road, it's not his fault but their own fault for not being aware. he's living his life no matter what. he's a million different people from one day to the next. his pace is the same for the whole clip, not fast, not slow but steady and decisive. he has self confidence but it's masked under a not giving a F attitude. this is the way i always lived my life. at 2:51 you can see him starring in his own reflection on a passing car. that's life, sometimes we get a glimpse of who we really are but it's fleeting and fades away. then we continue our journey and road, trying to make ends meet, find someone then we die. at 3:51 2 dudes just break away from his path. meaning that by this time he really imposes himself and knows who he is, others respect that and actually fear it. there's one crazy bitch that keeps following him but he doesn't mind her. for him it's just background noise. it's our past traumas and failed relationships. he's actually smiling and happy at one point, meaning he found his rhythm and his existence has meaning but he s not shy anymore, he knows who he is and accepts it, doesn't shun it. this is the path to enlightment.
