Starbucks wasn't as much of an institution back when this interview took place. Courtney is from Seattle and so she would have had some familiarity with it, probably more than most, but the 'Starbucks culture' was still catching on and a lot of us were confused and annoyed by the pretension of the company using its own coded terms to order a freaking coffee. People got used to it, but it's ultimately a liquid fast food chain that spread due to its reinvention of coffee as unhealthful snack drinks and a pretentious ordering system that made people feel like they were upper crust and distracted from the inflated costs.
