(1991) CA v. #BettyBroderick: Brian Forbes, a longtime friend of the Broderick family, takes the stand.
Elisabeth "Betty" Broderick is being retried for the shooting death of her ex-husband and his new wife, Dan Broderick and Linda Kolkena Broderick. Prosecutors claim an angry and bitter Betty killed the newlyweds in a jealous rage after she and Dan's very public and brutal divorce, in which he reportedly tried to leave her with nothing. #Netflix #CourtTV

Linda did some pretty dumb shit! Like sending notes like "Eat your heart out Bitch!". Refusing to hand over the China, which would have smoothed things over. She was a complete homewrecker alongside Dan, and neither cared about the damage it did to Betty or the kids. Kids coming down with Lice, Kids not having clothes to wear, so Betty had to use here Alimony to pay for stuff. Dan using Tax law to screw Betty out of any and every liquid asset available. He also was so scuzzy he devalued what his practice was worth so he didnt have to pay Betty its true value. Dude was a complete sleeze, but even so, Six thousand a month is enough to live off of. The problem is divorce law was not in her favor. Instead of restitution checks, she should have gotten everything as a lump sum. Her representation was incompetent, and was awful at arguing crime of passion during her 2nd trial. Not to mention one jurist didnt even know sentencing her to 2nd degree could result in life behind bars, and said post trial she would have hung the jury knowing that, so that would be 2 hung jury's in a five year span. Betty Broderick is a simple case of the Law not protecting domestic engineers. Dan Broderick would have never made it as an attorney without the help of Betty, she put food on the table and a roof over their heads, without knowing whether or not Dan would even graduate, or get disenchanted with Law like he did medicine. The defense was awful.
@dustinbarlow1623
@dustinbarlow1623 2 жыл бұрын
@@christinehutchins123 What I never understood was the defense not pushing the fact that Betty made Dan! Dan was a wish washy college student who had no direction till he met Betty. She brought him stability. Financially and emotionally. They failed to argue that she financially supported him through med school and law school not even knowing if he would graduate, then when Dan complained about work, she emotionally supported him and brought up that he should create his own practice. The defense should have put the squeeze on Dan to prove he would have been anything without Betty. The Following are irrefutable facts. 1) When Dan met Betty he had no clue what he wanted to do in life except possibly be a doctor, while Betty was successful in her own right attending Notre Dame and working on the side. 2) Dan coerced Linda to quit school and her job so Dan could go to medical school, had her pay for all the food and housing during that time, and also forced her to be his study partner 3) Dan Quit medical school and decided to go to Law School, most sane women would have said I am done with you! You have no clue WTF you want to do in life and I am not supporting you! Betty stuck on and supported him through Law School, and bought all his clothes for him. 4) Dan was a promising attorney tired of the political drama of climbing the ranks, ran into a career roadblock and Betty brought up he should start his own practice, and even mentioned you are willing to risk losing everything for me to do this? She said emphatically Yes! All I need is you and this Family. Thats what is important to me. 5) Dan starts his business, hires a younger looking version of Betty and the affair ensues! Its an absolute fact Dan would be nothing without Betty Broderick. In fact one could argue he needed her to achieve success, and when he didnt need her for that he left her dry.

Pretty nerve wracking that when Dan moved on, remarried, he still held shared property with his divorced first wife, she could not be sure he wouldn’t sell her home out from under her. A constant twisting of the knife… while murder is never the answer Dan certainly never moved on and severed ties, as a result he never allowed Betty to either. Truly horrific consequences.

Even today, putting yourself in her shoes.. it would make you pretty upset and so hurt. Especially knowing what was sacrificed those first years of the marriage for Dan’s future financial success- and when it is finally achieved and all should be well, he loses interest in his ‘old’ wife and upgrades to a younger one who doesn’t have to endure the sacrifices or birth and raise the children.. Old wife watches while new wife gets to enjoy what took years to accomplish, including being ‘friends’ with their children. Old wife is put on an allowance, none of the local attorneys want to touch your divorce case and definitely don’t want to fight it, all your mutual ‘friends’ are now friends with the new wife.. on and on 😔 I would be getting serious counseling, self-care, spiritual guidance.. any and everything to help heal that kind of hurt. I have zero clue how she was as a person and a partner, and absolutely 100% do not condone what she did. Just looking at her situation as the ‘ex-wife’.

@@valerierodger7700 I’m glad more people are catching on, and realizing she isn’t the victim she wants to be. After educating myself on this case, it’s obvious Betty was never going to be happy with anything he did. She drove him into Linda’s arms in the first place. She was always a lunatic. I also hate that she feels she won in her head. She doesn’t mind staying in jail, as long as she knows Linda and Dan aren’t enjoying life together; and most of the public is on her side. In her head, she won. That’s the saddest part. Everyone feels sympathy because they only heard her side. She killed the other side to the story so it can never be truly told.

@@frozenboot68 He was complete ass, if you look at younger Betty and Linda, he dumped the old model and went to a younger model. Younger Betty looked just like Linda. Dude was going through a mid life crisis, bought a sports car when he said he never would get one, lied to his wife about an affair. Took his time finding ways to liquidate all his assets and tying it all into the company after his company was valued, which in all honesty is devaluing your business with the intent of not giving your wife shit, as you lie to her about an affair. Dude went away and said he just needed some time to himself, then liquidated all their bank accounts, and again tied it to his business after it was appraised. The Dude made 2 million a year, but his assets alone alongside the business were worth 10 million. The problem is that Lindas husband was the head of the San Diego Bar, whether she had great representation or not, the judge was his friend. They'd go get drinks together. I wouldnt even be shocked if the judge helped him find ways to screw Betty. Dan was worth 10 million, and the best Linda could come up with was 28K in lump sum payments and restitution checks of 6k a month that would end if she remarried! Dude screwed her before the marriage and after the marriage. Ive known some POS in my lifetime, but this takes the cake. John Meehan wasnt even this bad.

She eventually married one but would spend her time complaining about his womanizing. Never mind that he was married to wife number 3 at the time she met him. He would later come home from touring to find her dead on the bathroom floor from an OD. Seems they had also been into drugs like heroin and coke. For all those who feel sorry for Betty… you should read transcripts of how she talked to her kids!!!! And refused to get them unless Dan paid her $28,500 a month!! Thats why she dropped them off at his house one by one. She said if she didnt get paid - she wasnt “babysitting” them!! Then she wld complain to everyone that he took her kids from her!! He agreed to let her get them one Easter … but the kids had a psych appt earlier that day and after what Betty told them … the Dr. advised Dan to keep them from her bc she felt Betty was a danger to them. She repeatedly told her kids she wanted to kill their Dad. SHE WAS verbally abusive to them all !!! Only referring to Linda as the C - U - Next Tuesday word. (To the kids) Before Dan left her - his life was hell with her.

Live in La Jolla and followed this case as it was happening. To answer the question of why the defense attorney asked Brian Forbes if he was Irish...Dan Broderick was deeply involved with The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick, a fraternal group still active today that exists to drink and play up their "Irish roots." (They also occasionally raise money for a charity or cause.) The FSOSP membership included many attorneys and a few judges. The defense attorney asked the question to establish a possible bias of the witness Forbes, i.e., You're Irish, too, and sympathetic to Dan. Elizabeth's entire defense was that she was fucked over by the San Diego legal fraternity in her divorce and was so frustrated she resorted to breaking into her former husband's house to "make him listen." In fact, she was awarded a very, VERY adequate monthly spousal and child support payment but felt deep humiliation at Dan's desertion of the marriage. Instead of moving forward in her own life and circumstances (as so many people do when faced with the dissolution of a long marriage), she chose to continue with extreme animosity in all her dealings with Dan. While not minimizing the trauma resulting from Dan's adultery and desertion, Betty behaved abominably. She stated many many times her sole focus was her children yet her grotesque behavior and vulgar language toward their father created a miserable environment for them. She was sanctioned by the court for her antics.
@leigh231

Asking a seemingly 'non-relevant' question often gets the jury thinking, or involved emotionally, via a bias on the jurors' parts... Sneeeaaakiness, was on both of the attorneys' agendas, this whole trial. 'Over-ruled' & 'Sustained' are just words uttered, while everyone takes all in. Very interesting to see it all play out, but sad overall, for the victims & the families (Dan & Linda, Betty & the kids 💖, of course) --- Let's just hope that society has learned something from this entire play-out. Fingers & toes crossed. No human is perfect. Lawyer, murderer, wife or husband, judge, detective, etc.

I'll say murder is never the answer. But he drove her to it. He did everything in his power to get her completely out of his life. He threw her away like a used car. He pushed her buttons cause he knew her enough to know excatly how she would react. He wanted the whole world his world to think she was crazy. Killing is never right for any reason. But I believe he drove her to complete craziness. He even knew what he was doing to get her own children to go against her. He pushed and pushed her to the brink of her to outright murder the both of them. He just really wanted her to go away dissappear out of his life and his children's lives. He caused his own death. He thought he could drive her to kill herself but it backfired on him. He was the great manipulator!! He was the devil in their relationship, cheating on her the whole time and telling her she was crazy. He was the devil in disguise. You get what you reap. And that's excatly what Dan got. He took everything she had with him. He held all of the strings, he had complete power over her. Purse strings POWER over all and the last straw her children. He Dan drove her to murder. That's my opinion. And it's ashame her children were against their own mom. But they too were manipulated by their own father. They were too young to see that their dad was evil. And he drove Betty to murder the both of them.

No he did not. research this case. She was violent and psychotic before she met him. Violent to his children, threatened his life even while she was with him going after him with a knife on several occasions. Put it this way, she is a female version of Charles Manson. Very evil horrible person She threatened the life of her oldest daughter who testified against her. The prosecution did not have the other children testify as it would be to traumatic to them. The process of separation to murder was over 12 years. Anyone who hires a pr firm to write articles and do movies about their 'case' in the event of a murder gets media coverage as if they are a 'saint' but on further investigation all the sociopathic/narcissistic behavior comes out. She has been diagnosed 3 times by psychiatrists as narcissistic personality disorder and hystrionics. The problem with pr and folks with severe mental illness such as narcissists and sociopaths who kill is their charisma and stories-not facts-glorify them and get them 'supporters' who get caught in the web of deceit and see the murderers as victims and their crimes as not so bad. For the record, I am a 70 year old female disabled widow who has over 2 decades investigating murders and 4 decades working with those with extreme mental illness such as her. She has never been granted parole as she shows no remorse and still vows to get those who 'acted' against her and remains extremely dangerous to this day.

Damn where were all if you when my ex kicked the crap out of me everyday for years till I finally found the courage to leave? But I didn't kill him. Oh I thought about it. YES I DID. But I didn't. It's sad that some men are very abusive to women but he didn't deserve to die because she got replaced by a younger woman. Nobody has to right to kill except for self defense. Including Betty Broderick. She's a murderer plan and simple. I heard her say in an interview that her and the kids were the victim's not Dan and Linda. Now that was just a cold thing to say. Her kids YES. Betty NO. I just can't condone murder.

Yes, Betty had a boyfriend and she was also getting $16,000.00 per month from Dan Broderick. She couldn't stand it that Dan was happy and moved on with his life. She had to get even. She was not a victim. She was a victimizer.

She was a VICTIM! Doesn’t excuse murder but Dan Broderick was a very successful medical malpractice attorney. He was an MD and a lawyer and used the legal system to bury his ex wife. He could have been kinder 😥

How do you justify $16k a month when he makes $137k with potential to continue to make more, when she supported him thru two degrees…. Never! He was getting away with making her insane…. She lost it because she knew he was a top attorney and no one would go against him… what she did was wrong but he pushed her to it.

@@pjhey947 she was no victim. She was a narcissist who was abusive towards him and to her children. Had he wanted to use the legal system to bury her, she wouldn’t have been able to murder him because she would’ve been in jail for all the things that she did to harass and terrorize the family, including her own children.

After watching the movie a few times, seeing the Broderick children on “Oprah Winfrey” and seeing the actual crime scene photos of the victims, I think that monster definitely deserves to stay in prison for the rest of her life. People get divorced every day in this country but they don’t all resort to murder.

Wow, I hope I never have to go to court. These guys ask a lot of stupid and repeated questions. Interesting, she killed her ex husband and his wife, she goes to prison for a while then she gets wealthier making a movie and probably writing a book. So unfair.

Boy that was long drawn out painstaking testimony - why is it a big deal how they got into the house - it's what's in the house that matters and the witness speaks too low.

No, each step is crucial in attempt to discredit the witness. Notice the same question was asked over and over and in different way? Pay attention to this strategy when watching court trials. It's brilliant. Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus, is a Latin maxim, phrase, meaning "false in one thing, false in everything"
