Definitely happened to me. I watched the first 4 episodes and then stopped and then finally watched episode 5 on the second time through and it hooked me through to the end. it not only looks great but you finally get a those small puzzle pieces of Spike's past.

I actually stopped watching after this episode. People kept telling me how great it was, what a masterpiece this episode would be and how it would hook me. It was built up a bit too high I guess and it didn't do that much for me. I then stopped watching the show and came back to it YEARS after. Finally completed the show which I basically took as a chore because people kept pushing me to watch this ''masterpiece''. I guess it was great for it's time, I can see how influential it was, it's a good show. But I never got the hype.

@@IIIIKaiserIIII i also had a hard time getting through this show -- i actually haven't finished it yet. i think this director's masterpiece is actually samurai champloo. that show is SO amazing, it has all of cowboy bebop's great qualities like gorgeous art, unique way of storytelling, characters that seem silly at first but have incredibly deep backstories, cool action sequences, funky OST. but it also has something more. i think the pacing of samurai champloo is more dynamic and the relationships between the characters are more fully formed, which feels satisfying. comparing the two, i'll always love champloo more than bebop

To put it simply. Almost each if not each of the pieces of soundtack are so extraordinary that people claim different ones as true masterpieces when all of them are. Truly. Call me call me and rain are my favs but whenever i fall asleep some piece of my mind sings dont bother none. We have to make them react to soundtrack alone if possible. It is a masterpiece in itself.

Fun fact: if you have a private-room karaoke place nearby, they will almost certainly have Rain available. You have to look in the part of the song list that has J-pop and K-pop songs, but it will be written in English.

...I can't believe it's taken me 15 years to realize the connection between the woman dropping rose _fragments_ and the "fragments" of raining glass. Further, "fragments" of _memories_ flashing in no particular order (because context has not yet been given). Every episode has a "motif" that sets the atmosphere of the story being told, and that was it: Fragments of backstory teased to the audience throughout the episode; fragments of memories; fragments of roses; new pieces/players; and unforeseen 'pieces' of the existing relationship between the crew as the past threatens to fracture them. Hell, even the cards fall and scatter like the roses do - perhaps a subtle premonition of fate...?

How about spike being a representation of the viewer going through the window, it's our first glance into the "story" of the show and the first fragments we are getting to see , almost like we are finally being thrown into this story for the first time. Almost like a "welcome to the show bitches" moment.

I think modern storytelling has caused audiences to take most things in a far more _literal_ fashion. It is so _in-your-face_ and lacking in subtlety (Westworld being one of the exceptions). Now, I could be wrong, but when they were talking about _sharing the same blood,_ I took that as being _figurative._ Particularly given what was said soon after. The newest *Terminator* trailer is another example of what I'm talking about. Some people took something *literally* when I felt it was _definitely_ to be taken *figuratively.* Sarah Connor is asked why that other girl is so important to her (paraphrasing). Sarah says, _"I used to be that girl."_ And I've actually seen some other reactors take that to mean that this _other girl is a younger version of Sarah Connor._ Which is just ridiculous. Sarah meant it _figuratively._ She was simply saying that _she too used to be a young girl on the run from a Terminator._ D'doi.

It meant sharing beasts blood and i got that. I would normally say that dub is to be blamed but not this time i think. Without backstory on Spike its possible to make a mistake like that and their face features are similar.

This episode is outstanding. The music and the cinematic are great, but what hit me the most were the dialogues. When Spike and Vicious were talking, even if I was not even understanding completely what it was about, I felt the seriousness and solemnity of the dialogues. Amazing.

Also I know I’m late but something that I feel no one picks up on is when Spike recovers on Beebop. You know he’s going through the flashback and he has Julia sing for him. He wakes up to Faye singing the same song. Signifying that Faye and Spike should’ve been together but their pasts hold them back. But more specifically Spike can never forget Julia even when theres someone right in front of him that could take care of him

Good analysis of one of Cowboy Bebop's greatest strengths: showing not telling. A lot of it is definitely kept intentionally mysterious, whole backgrounds are barely expanded on by the end, leaving the viewer to form their own conclusions and the show is great, at least partially, for that reason.

i enjoyed this series, and many people had this in their top 10 animes, but i dont simply cuz their stories are only told in the early eps and the few last eps. i wouldve loved this more if they just finished all the character introduction arcs in the first half and really go gung ho on their background story on the latter half

I don't watch dubs, so I don't know myself, but I found a reddit page where they seem to be in agreement (for the most part) that the dub is superior to the original sound, so, I suppose it is worth the trial run at least. I haven't watched it since it released, so now would be a good time to revisit the show. I'd have suggested MONSTER too, but it might be too slow-paced for most people to properly enjoy (sadly)
