Cory lives a very sheltered life, this is actually very good compared to some of the stuff ive seen. Just last week I went to building site with some romanians staying on site, they had a 8.5kW electric shower running off some 1.5mm 3 core flex powered through a 13A plug. I look at it and think, 'how has that not blown the fuse'. Opened the plug and found a PZ2 drill bit wedged in place of the fuse and that was the safest part of the installation.

Sounds like my old school. The hand driers kept blowing their fuses so the caretaker put pieces of 6" nails in them instead. The covers had been lost and you could see the nails heating up.

Goes with my experience to. Generally this would be called DIY. But I mostly see the best and worst with "professionals". and on average, Diy is in the middle ground. and PS I have seen much worse that that, that was by multiple professionals.

I'm retired now,I used to do this inspection and testing 80% of the time, I hated it! I did a big massive university village that took 18 months to do! 1000s circuits and faults on every one. Maintained by city council, Mr. Blunders. And I was the one always in trouble? "You switched off the power", they would say. "My computer went off"! Everything held together with pvc tape and connectors. It cost £millions and £millions to re-wire the lot all for nothing. I passed through Manchester and stopped in disbelief. The whole site has been demolished to make way for a new hospital. I still have dreams nowadays of the Elizabeth Gaskell site! Great video, and good luck with your work.

worst thing about EICR's for me is that it becomes a thing where you're just going back on someone elses fuck ups. that pretty much all I would seem to find on most of the jobs.

As an MIET and Chartered Electrical Engineer myself, I can fully sympathise with your views of that mess. The house owner should sue the fool that did the earlier mess and should either get a qualification in knitting or electrical installation, if he has any aptitude for either, which appears doubtful. As for lecturing electrical installation, one can only hope he's going to have no success and is forced to leave. Better still, if you know him, its your duty to name him to the IET and the college backed up with photographs and a statement about his identity from the house owner. Basically, he should be prosecuted and all his work remedies before it causes fire or electrocution.

Can't wait for part 2. Why bodge a job like this with all the cabling under the units. If it can't be done correctly as to code then don't take the job on in the first place. It looks like a kitchen fitter has taken on the job doing the whole fitting of electrics and cupboards.

It’s disheartening for customers, they pay a for a “Proper” electrician only to find out that it was a total waste of money. Or done on the cheap only to be bitten further down the line. I attended a customer for a fault, kitchen had only been in 3 months, Carpenter charged £600 to rewire kitchen and told the customer he had an electrician in turned out he did the wiring himself. Had to have the kitchen taken out to rewire the whole lot. We need laws like they have in Australia covering electrical work.

Even with the laws we have here in Australia there are still plenty of cowboys getting about. I have come across some absolutely appalling electrical work in my 20 years in the trade.

Laws never stop incompetence , we are already highly regulated , i for instance can't work on historical buildings any more because its not on my card (although i hold qualifications that say and prove otherwise but the new regulation systems have decided they won't recognise them ). They forget those with the knowledge , skills and experience often trained under a different regime where college and formal paperwork never really mattered . My main trade is carpentry and joinery , Electrical work was a secondary trade i learned later in life , at 61 now i have no intention of formalising my training done 30 plus years ago.

My last degree was software engineering, some time ago now. But why would you be a tutor in about 27K when as a software engineer you can earn 3 times that? To be fair, most where brilliant, and just want a few quieter years after a successful carrier, before they retired. But a few where utterly useless, and clearly were in teaching because they couldn't do the day job. This is the real issue with vocational training in the UK. Tutors are mostly paid all the same. so a few years ago, if the wanting to teach catering or beauty, then 27k was a far salary. But for IT, Electrical, plumbing etc. who would give up a well paid job to teach?

The problem with this sort of appalling workmanship is even when you've tested everything in sight you still might not find doggy hidden joints under floors etc. And it begs the question "for the clients safety is now the time to rewire the whole of the property" ?

Got a 3 phase incomer here at home too - on what was a looped service. Caused much shambles when the (single phase) meter was changed to the digital sort years ago (first two installers apparently only had single phase training)

This is precisely why we do an eicr first before any work like a consumer board change. Cory, I applaud you for taking us through what a good portion of us find as part of our daily routine. I use these examples to show young apprentices how Not To!! You were actually predicting each stage as I’d guess you’ve probably seen done before, by a none qualified spark. I found this intriguing but also had a sense of de ja vu.... Great video.

21:49 Pointing out the 3 phase.. I spotted that earlier when he was talking about the covers are loose.. I was wondering if it was 3 phase, but I have zero expertise. Just KZfaq videos... I given myself a mini pat on the back for working that out myself. (I say working it out, more questing it myself) I was so pleased when he pointed it out though..

We have 3 phase down the block and into the house. But then each house has only one phase in use. First house, first phase and so on. That spreads the loads over all three phases. But when you want 3 phases you can get it without much costs.

@@PeterPetersNL I don't even know where the tails are in my house. My Consumer unit is a floating box on the wall, nothing visible in or out.. I never really paid attention in my last house, it wasn't an interest at the time. And my parents house.... MY GOD... I don't even know how to describe how old the electrics are.. I've never even seen the shape of their consumer unit on any video for a comparison.. When they said "Oh, we will see an old board" .. and they showed ^ that board.. I was very disappointed. It wasn't old enough to identify what my parents have. It still looked modern in comparison. Though, next time I am around their house (Most likely Tuesday evening to make sure they have everything they need), I might see if I can see if they have a 3 phase tails thing like Mr Bodge had..

What a horrendous find. EICR only way forward to get the full extent of the problems. Problem is with all the finds you saw do you leave it in the way you found it ie do the tape up on those horrible splices in the kitchen? Is there a minimum rule for safety to have to employ even though you were not involved in that installation to leave it safe for the client. Glad you did not run away from this. Situations like this is where real sparkies are made. It does not have to be pretty if your not doing a full rewire. Making it safe and upto standard is the first order of the day. Looking forward to the next video. Real world sparking....... well done Artisan and Cory.

Interesting video, thanks! Beware oven ratings from early 2000’s some were ridiculously high using elements sourced from a commercial environment. a fifty amp supply seems high, but check that data tag to confirm. CPC-circuit protective conductor (sorry ocd)

This guy is teaching others, that's totally bloody scary. Keep up the good work mate, really enjoying your content and commentary style. One suggestion though mate: Buy some overshoes, I wouldn't be wandering around anyone's house without boots on. I did it once and ended up at hospital with a piece of glass in my foot, never again.

Had a friend who was on the same testing/inspection course as me who years later became a college tutor. His work was always to regs and tidy, but he was very slow. Being an ex-army engineer, he took no crap from anyone, lost his temper with some rude toe rag teenager and pinned him against a wall. Lost the job.

Im not an electrician and love the videos of all you professionals -- the work you checked was shameful. I have routed in cable etc in my home and ready for final check and connection to any new circuits and take so much time in reseach and then care and trouble to make it look good and workmanlike (much as you chaps) Also totally OTT with quality materials and then all accessible, tagged and labled. How the heck that clown as a "proffessional" is now teaching in a college is beyond me, no wonder he gave up in business.God help his students.

Bloody hell, I'm not even a spark and those cable joints scared me. I've always been wary of electricity since I broke one of the old "kettle" leads accidentally and got a belt when my hand bridged live to neutral at 240v.

Here in Germany we have 16 amps 1.5 mm radial socket lines. For 20 amps you need 2.5 mm. If a high load is to be expected or the cable is very long, thicker cables are required. Plugs have no fuses. Lamp circuits can be fed from socket circuits or, better still, have their own cables. The fuse is then 16 amps or less. Ring circuit are prohibited here.

Wow. I was curious to find out what ‘ring circuits’ are. Sounds scary to me. I do like you use higher voltage. Here high currents even with bigger copper can have issues with poor connections. I’m always careful on termination as 120v with high wattage, current can be high.

I knew about M-11 from Rumpole of the Bailey, played by Leo McKern. I had jobs I refused as the job would take way too much time and aggravation. As I heard it, fuse wire is used in service panels down under or in Australia. . . .

It's a Wisebox. Off the shelf radio controlled circuits. Tend to get used for garden lights and water features, but you can use them for anything. Standard kit gives you 4x 5A circuits and a keyfob remote

I really like to watch these kind of videos. I have seen an installation that was modified by university students of electrical engineering. Those guys only learn things from a theoritical point of view and don't know anything about regulations and practical stuff. The installation was a complete disaster. Green/yellow earth wire was used for everything, except earth. And there was a junction box containing solid wires which were soldered to glass fuse holders mounted on a DIY wooden frame..

That defo needs to be reported. Its bad that a time served sparky did it (and charge good money for it), but for that person to now teach is ridiculous, as his shoddy practices may be the foundation for apprentices who will continue his bad practises. There are a lot of people who don’t understand what constitutes good workmanship and will happily pay for work to be undertaken due to reputation. If the work can be attributed to him, he should be reported to the NICEIC and to his new employer.

You should be able to remove the cupboard in front of the "consumer unit" by the cooker, find all the fittings holding it to the next cupboard and remove, check any going up into the worksurface, screw up the adjustable feet to give you room and it should slide out.

Always do an EICR first but never plan the board change the same day. I Don't even book in the board change untill we have the EICR results. For instance, did an EICR last week pre board change and the house ends up needing a rewire.

I haven't been in the trade for yonks, but one quick look would have told me that the whole thing would be a can of worms. I would have told the customer that a complete rewire was needed, and have left it at that. At least the customer would have saved a fair bit of dosh which could have gone towards a rewire, rather than paying to have a bodge tidied up and made reasonably safe. I have come across installations that looked neat, with a tidy c.u., only to fine a pile of connector blocks buried under plastered walls. And everything can test ok, and still be potentially lethal - cables slotted into joists, diagonal runs chased in, etc. Enjoyed the video....

that is the same reason I avoid domestic installations, beside what is the point to deal with circuits with no bs88-3 fuses and with silly single phase, where current is below 50A...

That was shocking so shocking, even I am not qualified and even I know that is not right... how do these people sleep at night, that is deffo house fire territory with 2.5m on the 50 amp breaker if the circuit got loaded. 33:41 In Canada, there is no sleeve on the grounding conductors. From what I can see, the CPC is connected to any exposed metal just as we would do over here. Why is it the reasoning behind requiring a sleeve on the CPC in the UK?

Customer service in old houses is always a surprise. Some pipes here are even still insulated with fabric or the insulation is so brittle that it crumbles between your fingers. It gets really interesting when one (or more) previous owners of the house have already "improved" something themselves. What the previous "electrician" did in your video is what I call a botched job. Is single-phase supply for flats / small houses still common in the UK? Here in Germany it is common to supply flats / houses three-phase. (With the exception of the "old stock", if nothing is changed in the installation, but only repaired).

great video. You moan about it being a bad day and possibly walking away, but its not the customers fault and you have done the best thing, made an installation safe, that should give you a great feeling and job satisfaction, and the customer seems pretty happy that you are sorting it out for them. and you are getting paid. These people needed help and you are giving it to them. If I was an electrician, this would be one of the good days. Stay safe.

R2 in a 2.5mm twin is 1.67 lager than the 1.5mm cpc because 2.5÷1.5= 1.67. So therefore if you had a ring (for example reason only) of 6mm twin with a 2.5mm cpc, the cpc should be 2.4 times higher because 6mm÷2.5mm=2.4.

Isolation between neutral and ground requires care here when there is a shared neutral between branches of power. We have two 120v feeds, between them is 240, which is used for very high wattage appliances.

Not as much as on European/UK 3-phase: 230V live to Neutral 400V phase to phase (factor sqrt(3) because 3-phase). The stuff that North American homes run on 230, we run on 400, sometimes all 3 phases, we have plugs for that, such as 11kW from 3x16A .

I'm only 16 min in and I feel the need to comment. I might only be a Jr Spark but id stop right there and tell the customer it needs a re-wire..... I'm not sure how Cory calls this yet as like I said I'm only 16 min in but that's shocking! I don't think id ever junction a cooker I believe it should be a straight run to the isolation switch. the current going through that cable is high in my eyes and by putting a junction in there let alone how its done just screams fire to me. SHOCKING that's all i got to say

That ring you tested could be 2 radials in one breaker,also them klix plugs are good to use for testing uses ,ie L/N before you plug in the lights,yes looks a mess but for the sake of the new owners would of do what your doing and put it right 👍👍

If it was two properly installed radials it would of been on a 16A or 20A mcb and I’m sure Cory would of guessed that. I bet it was on a 32A mcb so it should be a ring with end to end continuity on all conductors.

@@robertwilliams7222 think you will find he said he was going to run new cables to make it a ring,and obviously the state of the wiring they didn't have a clue to fit a 16 or 20a breaker 👍
