You are a gifted teacher. Your lesson reminds me how some people prefer to cook by a precise recipe, but many people just "whip something up", based on principles they have mastered over time. For instance, you can play fast and loose making up a casserole recipe, but making up a cake recipe may require more precision, and possibly more failed attempts. You have inspired me, yet again.

Just saw this video. Excellent demo on how to mix paints. Some artists try to show the consistency when they do a pour, but their hand hides it, or the color is too dark. This was extremely helpful because I've been struggling with consistency for a long time now. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your skill. It is deeply appreciated!

That's an awesome way of teaching paint consitencies. If you do not mind I'm going to call it "THE PAPER CONSISTENCY PLATE"! I mean that demo can't possibly break it down anymore. This method can be used by everyone.... mix the paints to what feels and appears the dripping off the stick, BUT THEN....BEFORE your actual pour. Pour a bit of each color out onto the plate and tilt it up for visualization of the rate at which the paints you mixed flow, and make adjustments if necessary. Thank you cathleen!

Wonderful Cathleen! I think you answered a lot of commonly asked questions, The best thing is how you said we all find our own way, not that it’s easy… I remember how it was it first. Like everyone else I started and mimicked other artists, it was not the funnest time in my fluid art journey, but then! Mixing and playing with paint has become such a joy, and part of a beautiful process that I call my own. Thank you for spreading that powerful message. Art is so much fun, and it gets magical after we stop stressing about doing it perfect.✨🤘

Thank you Kris 🍻🍻🍻are the little bumps usually when you do swipes? Happens to me. Air bubbles forming under the paints due to the swiping. I need to torch the hell out of it sometimes. I also tap the canvas a few times.
@heartlandmooninspired
@heartlandmooninspired 3 жыл бұрын
@@COZCreationsArt Hi! The bumps happen on most of the techniques I do, but not every time and not as many on some than on others. I wonder now, if I haven't been as consistent in my attempts to remove the air bubbles on each pour. I had someone tell me that I wasn't mixing my paints long enough and mixing them ahead of time. Tapping the canvas has always worked best for me, and I think I've gotten a little lax with that step. It seems that I had read on a couple of posts that you can use a fine sandpaper to remove bumps, is that true?? Once I get the bumps under control, I need to do some serious varnishing on the collection I'v created! ♥♥♥

I can tell that you are a very special lady. I have learned a lot from watching your videos, I'm afraid of using metal paints I'm not into sparkles, golds or anything of that nature, but I'm going to venture and paint with copper after watching you paint with it I really liked the results you achieved, copper is a metal color I really like. Thanks so much. This is about as clear as you can possibly make it without standing in front of someone, letting them feel the consistency with the stir stick. And your consistency for swipes is about the same? I wondered why my swipes sometimes slide away during the night....So, I have mixed paints that are thicker or thinner (I guess I make too much per painting.). I will need to go back to each and work on thickening them. Thank you for sharing your gifts with everyone.

You are a wonderful Blessing & A Great Teach Cathleen!!! Thank you for taking the time to help all of us understand more! One thing that confuses me is The Base Coat Consistencies! Should it be the same consistency as your other paints when doing a swipe & also do you use the same pouring medium or do you add Water??? Hello Kim. My base coat on my swipes is the same consistency as my swipe colors. That’s weird that you white artist loft acts up on you. Maybe thicken it up a bit. I noticed the black it thicker. Black is always thicker then most paints 😊🎨

@@COZCreationsArt Yes Black Artist Loft Flow is thicker. I usually use 2 Floetrol to 1 paint on both colors, then add water to black if needed. I've only started trying out GAC 800 with Floetrol lately for my Courtney & Cathleen Swipes! I Love the results! But I've been rationing my GAC 800 & not using in base coat just Floetrol. I need to try just 1 to 1 on my White base coat with Gac800/Floetrol medium. I might have just figured out my White base problem while typing to you.....😕 Love your Art & Appreciate your help!!! What did you use to thicken your paints before The Mix? The Mix is backordered 3-4 wks. Would you happen to know if Michael's will be selling Artist Loft Flow in Metallic Silver & Gold this winter? I picked up 2 of each last winter & running low. Cheers, Kim 🍻

For a Dutch pour, about how much thinner do you want your paint than for the Swipe?

That was very informative and I wish it had been available 18 months ago! Consistency for the job! Consistency, consistency consistency! A different consistency for each paint style. You can feel it when you stir. When I give lessons the students still want a recipe - ALWAYS, I give them a lot of time until they get it right, even if it takes hours. If they are new to pouring, I always use just one brand for the lesson. You’re so right, in the end they have to be able to make it work themselves (or stick to only one brand - and that doesn’t always work as the paints still vary). If they/I haven’t got hours I might pre-mix the paints. Some only want to make one painting. Others are hooked! I tried for 3 months using lots of paint, lots of canvases and blood, sweat and tears, until I worked out my Dutch Pour consistency. I could make a good pour, but it wasn’t until I worked it out for myself that it became second nature. Other pours were easier than Dutch Pours, the consistency was more forgiving, as were swipes. I consider it therapy to spend an evening with a glass of wine, cups, paint and mediums. That gives me time to anticipate the joy of starting with new colours the next day.

My therapy as well Rael. That darn Dutch Pour. I am working on those consistency’s right now. I just can’t get it right for me yet. I prefer to not flood my paints with the base coat color. I will not give up. Thanks for always joining me Rael. Stay well 😊

I started using the Golden Acrylics soft liquid in the flip top bottles like this. They are so much better! The Golden screw top caps on the tube paint drives me totally crazy when they gunk up. They are so difficult to close and open after a while.

Thank you! You are Amazing! 💗 I do have a tip for mixing heavy body tube paint to prevent all those clumps. Start with a very small pm (1t) and mix til smooth, then add another 1t and repeat several times as you go, it will stay smooth. Love you and your work so much! 😚 💕

Thanks great video. I usually use Amsterdam paints however I found a very pretty gray in another brand and I thought I would try it. I mixed my paints the normal way and found that did not work for this particular brand. So it goes back to your point no your paints. Also when using a new brand mix slowly because it may not mix the way you expect.

OMG I just saw this same issue in a Facebook group the other day about some girl ready to give up because she couldn't do anything right & her mix was all wrong & so on, and the amount of people on that one stream alone were giving this girl every INCORRECT answer about mixing that it just blew my mind ...I even saw someone say "Oh just mix your paints the same exact way for every technique. " .... & then I fainted !!! Hahahaha. I was the same way you were when I 1st started CONFUSED & OVERWHELMED and watching way too many artists so I just stopped and started taking little bits of info on what I needed just to get me started & then I just started trying different things & the very 1st pour I learned how to do was Melyd's amazing cloud pour which wasn't easy at first but within a day or two after I stopped watching how everyone else was doing it with glue or milk paint or satin enamels & just started tweeking mixes myself I nailed it & I've never had to ask that dreaded question again. Lol. The only thing I might ever ask any other artist about a pour I've never tried is if they prefer their mix on the thinner or thicker side & then I take it from there and do what works best for me and the paints & PM that I'M using. Never had a problem since thank goodness !!! 😜😜😜😜😜😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
