Welcome friends! Today I am meeting you next to the wood stove in our tiny cabin to chat about all things homeschool! How this year is going thus far, which curriculum we have changed and also the ones we have loved! I am being totally honest, unit studies haven't really happened yet this year and that makes me so sad. As my kids get older, our time looks different. Still sweet but different. Other subjects take longer and time just seems to fill up faster. I am trying to navigate keeping a special time available each day or maybe even every other day for unit studies. If you are a unit study family and also have high schoolers, what does that look like for you?

Thank you so much for joining me today for a cozy homeschool chat! ☕️🫶 It's been a while, and it was so nice to share a little check-in on our homeschool year. I'd love to hear how your year is going so far! Please tell me!!! Also, if you are a mama of older kiddos and are also transitioning in all the things...I am with you, sister! We will walk this out together! ❤

You always make me feel like I’m doing alright. We do a relaxed, chill schooling and sometimes I feel like we aren’t doing enough but I feel peaceful about where we are, like you mentioned as well, so I’m trusting in God with this plan and that He’ll let me know if things needs to change. ❤ always refreshing to hear your updates. Thank you!

“That’s where we thrive.” It sounds like deep down you know what to do regarding unit studies…Somehow make a place for them. 😊 I think the key is in adjusting them to this new season of life. The beauty of unit studies is that that they change as the kids change.

i don’t know if you do show your kids but i haven’t seen a video with them in.. which is encouraging because i have wanted to make a home ed channel in a long time but i am very very private with my children online now and it made me think maybe i wouldn’t be able to make good content to help people without vlogging. You have inspired me! so thank you. I love your videos and you’re such a lovely warm hearted person, so thank you. its great to see someone much further down the line with so much peace as someone who often struggles with this x

When my oldest started highschool we transitioned to Study It Sundays which is when we came together as a family to do our unit studies.

My son is a freshman year and he began monarch at the first of the year and we just switched to a new curriculum. We were also missing that bonding that goes along with unit studies. I decided to sit down and write my own unit study for December for the 5 of my children. I wrote a guideline of bible stories and verses for those 25 days, acts of service, crafts, and activities to do as a family. I usually buy something this time of year but I wanted to make a study of our own to cherish. I hope your oldest is able to sit in stillness with you during this season. I just wanted to share my idea because I’ve felt that longing with my son as he’s been growing and maturing. God will give you the knowledge on what he instills upon your family ❤️ I’m like you I don’t want to mess up on my oldest transcripts but you’re wonderful and doing a great job! I love your videos because they’re all so relatable to my life. Will be praying for you and your family for blessings this season ❤

I’m so thankful that you recommended Denison Math. I have 2 kids using it, and it has been an amazing switch for us. My 10th grader struggled with math since 8th grade. She had tears and anxiety over doing math. This year the tears about doing math started 2 weeks before our school year did. I watched your video about Denison and I decided it would be worth a try. BEST DECISION EVER! She just finished chapter 4 in Geometry. She has gotten 100% on all of her tests! No more tears, and she hasn’t even asked me to help her once. My 8th grader has never struggled with math, but I thought since I switched curriculum with my older child I might as well switch him too. He is doing awesome with the program as well. Thanks!

Hello beautiful friend. Unit studies ahhhhh this is something I have been working on too. How to add them in during the older years. I only do nature unit studies and book studies and the occasional unit study that other homeschool mamas or families create. It’s honestly hard adding and finding units for highschool or for a group setting. Love campfire and adding that in on Fridays and seems to work for all ages in one setting. This has been been trial and error and finding what works in this new season. Happy homeschooling

I am struggling with unit studies this school year too! You are not alone. I love how flexible your homeschool year is! We are the same in my home. My youngest pushes back hard against any curriculum that seems rigid and boring. I tried IEW and loved it myself but my youngest hated it! I will definitely try again because it is amazing but I also don’t want my son to hate it. We love Denison math! My oldest is doing pre Algebra from Denison and is thriving. I have tried so many different math curriculums with my youngest and we have finally gone back to Teaching Textbooks and he is happy. Such an adventure!

I saw a similar thread of discussion with another mom of teens. The advice given was to set the competing priorities aside and prioritize the one most important to Mom. Set a time for the priority and guard it. I am navigating this with 2 teens, a preteen, and two younger children. Lots of transitions.

My best advice about unit studies will break your heart a little bit. It did mine. 🥹 You can do them without your oldest, it’s a hard thing to comprehend but when my oldest started working and driving, we couldn’t fit it all in anymore either. I do treasure the time when he is able to be with us but it’s not often. He just turned 18 last week and will graduate in June, so many tears for me. Why do they have to grow up so fast? 😢❤

This is so very hard, isn’t it? Our oldest also turned 18 very recently and is a senior. It is so bittersweet. It is so hard to go on without our firstborn being as involved in our homeschool.
