CP 5875 starting off the morning waiting for 5 trains to meet before they can proceed west to Drynoch and proceed "siding to siding" said RTC. After waiting for 5 eastbound trains CP 5875 work train departs Spences Bridge and heads past Drynoch only to realize they had 200 feet of train that wouldn't have fit as there were gondolas parked in the siding, thankfully the new plan was to head for Thompson to unload the Side Dump Cars for some railroad repairs on the CP Thompson Subdivision. Check below for information about trains featured in this video, also feel free to skip ahead to any Chapters in this video. Thanks for watching, please Subscribe!

Do the locomotives have an additional pneumatic system to drive the dump cars?

They are air cylinders, the cars have a second air line that hooks up to the locomotive.

I guess for safety reasons it makes sense to keep the dump charging separate from the brake line. The loco's regular air compressor is still enough to run the dumps. Fill all the tanks on a common line, however long that takes, and then each car has enough air for one dump without affecting the other cars.

Hey Tyson. Another great video. Loved it. I like to figure them out. I have experience in derailing side dump ore cars (way, way smaller than these). Notice how they bounce up and over as they dump? Well sometimes they don't stop. It looks to be a long way down for all involved if something were to 'go sideways'. I was a green trammer in an underground mine hauling 5 ton ore cars back and forth to the main ore and waste dumps (passes) where I would dump them into the appropriate hole located beside the tracks. Like the side dump cars in this video I was unloading my ore cars one at a time, starting behind the loci and working my way back towards the last car. When I tipped that last car over it flipped the car over, dragging the dolly with it. That last car started a chain reaction that dragged my 6 car train backwards pulling cars one by one off the track and into the mouth of the ore pass but I was saved by the grizzly installed to prevent such 'issues'. The grizzly is a series of parallel pieces of track embedded into the sides of the openings hole which stops 'large objects' from falling, in this case 5000' down to the primary crusher. As I have mentioned before, I am vaguely aware of the geography of the area you film in in a drive by window kinda way. Never get to stop and always in a hurry. Frankly I'm jealous you get to spend so much time out there in that tantalizing area watching the scenery change. So I confess your videos are like a quiz for me. I also confess that I read nothing before I started watching this video and I missed the opening shot of the hotel. The clues are there but I don't see them all. So this is what went on in my mind as this video unfolded. First clue - Rock Train mentioned in teaser photo. Assumption - Rock train = must be repairing damage during flooding as I know where you shoot-ish. There was many shots back in the day of a railroad bridge with the footings washed out alongside the washed out highway bridges. Perhaps they are back filling the temp repairs. Opening shot with train. (I missed the real opening shot with the hotel and the sign explaining your location). Great visual intro. Workhorse locis on siding with loaded side dump rock cars. Fairly large rip rap. Back filling for sure. Hmm I have knowledge of side dump cars. This is going to be a very interesting video. Location - No shadow to confirm orientation of train east or west. In a mountain valley but kind of open terrain. Oh, approaching train. Great capture. Morphs into oil train. great location on the curve. Two locis and tanker cars. Hmm Rewind video - no buffer car = train is empty so it must be going east. So rock train is going west towards flood damaged area. Nice shots of shiny new compliant cars after Lac Megantic disaster. I really have to learn how to recognize them. Next shot - Rock train hauling One is in a Pacman livery, woot woot. Location - in hoodoos, Looks a lot like your other video shot in February with the windy river and dirt blowing around. River in background is still blue (green) So not to Fraser Canyon yet. Either Thompson or some other feeder river. Rock pit must be somewhere East .... Entering marshaling area somewhere. Great radio chatter capture. Giant bare tree stems in background - Do they have Arbutus over there or are they those beautiful pines? No matter, way more trees so this is the west side of a mountain compared to the hoodoo lands futher east. Next shot. Creeping along the edge of a very steep river valley. Great filming location. Obvious Tyson knows this area so well. I am so jealous. Drama induced due to location. Workers spotting train for dump. I know this. Great demo of interaction between crew and engineer. Being a loci engineer on a construction gang might just be a tad more interesting that being a long haul operator. More varied work situations, different pace than being alert and pushing that button every minute. Multiple shots of dumping showing the perilous location and the operation of the rock car dumping mechanisms. Excavator has to pull forward to pry rock out of way so side dump car doors can close. I wouldn't want to see that excavator being knocked down there or slid down due to undermining. ... I wonder if the highway is down there below dumped rip rap. Sees river in background for first time. It's still green so not in Fraser canyon. Somewhere else. Must be Thompson River valley. Even captured shot of train on other side of river. Bonus. More shots from another great angle of the operating of the side dump cars and how they jump and the excavator digging them out. Nice toss of the rock. If one does it wrong and releases it late one can follow the rock with disastrous consequences. So video over. Scrolled down and read the second line in the title and the description for the first time confirming my suppositions. Thompson Canyon - Yes. Trains travelling west - yes. Starts at Spences Bridge - didn't get that. Don't know the area well enough. What a treat. What a great video Tyson. Scott Taipale has the most amazingly long shots made possible with that fancy, silky smooth, ball head he has mounted under his camera as he filmed from his perch the trains crawling back and forth underneath him as they climbed their way up a mountain pass to cross over the Sierra Mountains. Wide World of Trains seems to capture the magic of railroading with his skillful use of his ultra zoomed telephoto lens shots of unit trains, shining rails and signals going down. And you Tyson have the eye for great location shots filled with dramatic but simple footage and the ability to edit up a comprehensive and interesting story line. It doesn't hurt that you are in such a magnificent location to begin with. I just had to share this latest video.

That rock train is awesome, I need to get some of those in HO scale for my layout, and I love those classic CP locos on the front of it. Just before 2 minutes when it goes under the bridge and then the river is revealed behind the train as you sweep the camera, really cool shot!!! Oh man around 4 minutes that spur is all cut out of the mainline, guessing for an old mill or something, how long has that been cut out for? I love trying to envision those spurs in their heyday! Great capture on the rock dump, man those must be some strong hydraulics, then the swing to the other side of the river to catch a train in the distance, many pro stuff as always!!! Excellent Excellent video, top notch stuff and loving seeing the work crews out and about, now I need to order up some old CP SD40's and some rock cars, good stuff my friend, take care

Great video to watch. The loco crew were in the trailing locomotive.... 5875 ? Was this for better vision during the dumping of the cars? I've seen similar cars being dumped a few years ago when I worked as a Loco Engineer for the New Zealand Railways (3ft 6" track gauge...) Sometimes the wheels on the dump car, on the opposite side of the dump, would momentarily leave the rail before touching back down! Ive subscribed *thumbs up*
@TracksideTyson
@TracksideTyson 2 жыл бұрын
There was a crew member in the lead unit and one in the trailing unit...but that's a great point maybe that's the reasoning for one guy in the trailing unit as they were both calling signals and talking on the radio for the whole trip. I have heard from a few comments about these cars tipping over and on the other side was a steep edge leading down to the Thompson River so if the car tipped over it would take out the excavator to. Wow, considering the absolutely _huge_ diameter of the dump piston/cylinders under those cars lifting the bed, I have to assume the dumping is done with _pneumatic_ pressure rather than _hydraulic_ pressure; presumably using the pressure from the brake line stored in an accumulator seen between the two pneumatic dumping cylinders? If so charging the brake line on a long consist of these side dump cars must take a while...
@sharkheadism

Yes, completely pneumatic

I have dumped many side dumps on Albreda sub . This can be very dangerous if the rip rap is even a little damp at minus 30 degrees and the load sticks in the car. The "off" side wheels can actually come off the track and then slam back when the load releases and you are standing at the control handle at the end of the car. NOT FUN !!!

Not sure maybe the air dump isn’t working on those cars.

Why are there empty cars in the middle of this train. To save the conductor/brakeman the walk? Even a rookie knows the lightest cars go to the back of the train.this is how cars derail.

Not sure with the strategies they have but what they did worked so they know what there doing, maybe those cars that they didn’t load up were not working with the air dump correctly.

Seems like a waste of time to me. Take the mountain side and cut deeper into it. That's a big hole to fill hauling rocks.
