For all the ignorant people saying he is playing this too fast. This is supposed to be played in prestissimo which means as fast as possible without losing tempo and messing up.

It goes to show that people who want to learn want it slowed down a bit so we can see/hear and do, not just watch someone playing a bit too fast for their own purposes in a tutorial. Just my 2 cents minus inflation.

A Solfegietto is a short vocal exercise from the classical Italian school! This is not a piece to be sung, but the form is remniscent of that *style.* As a classically trained singer I will suggest: a singing style, with phrasing much as a singer would approach it!

"If you want to play without dynamics, go play a harpsichord." - In my view, the contrast "dynamics vs. harpsichord" is somewhat exaggerated. Why shouldn't I try to stay as close as possible to the original composition, even if playing a modern instrument? True, C.P.E. Bach composed in a highly sensitive and emotional style, but then I am asking whether it is really necessary to boost these features by "artificial" means. (Or, at the utmost, I would use dynamics very sparsely...)

If they had access to a better technology, they would have used the better technology. ;) So his point is quite relevant, actually.

No he did not. The fortepiano used up until approx. 1796 could play some dynamics; however, the refined pianoforte with greater touch control and the sustain pedal came later. A "danger" with the fortepiano incidentally: unintended repeating notes due to the action rebounding.

Ugh. it's not a full tutorial, it is a preview. Not very ethical.

He is trying to make a living with a very very hard earned skill. A lot of what online (KZfaq) teachers give can be taken for granted. It is a currently wiser decision to say "my information is valuable and is worth reasonable compensation" than to rely on the KZfaq definition of value (i.e. view count). KZfaq doesn't care about the quality - somebody has to step in a say "I AM quality". I hope that makes sense.
@alwayslistening4444

Imagine spending a great bulk of one's time preparing to present meaningful information to a crowd of listeners. Should the size of the crowd be the only variable that dictates the amount of compensation? I'd hope the conclusion is, "no". If the circumstance was that only crowds of very small size attended the presentation, would that always mean that the information is not of any great value? I'd imagine you'd say, "no". In the KZfaq model of compensation, the answer to both of these questions is an implied, "yes". "Yes" to compensation being based on view count, and "yes" to the idea that value is a function view count. As a means of preserving the link to realizing the return of one's personal effort at the point of distributing it, it is necessary for the creator to determine the value of their contribution, not the undiscerning and apathetic platform (KZfaq).

I have to say that this an idiotic comment. I am not a member of Josh's website but I have followed him, as well as other instructional piano channels, on KZfaq for years. Josh has a TON of useful information and tips in his videos. If you had spent any time whatsoever looking at his videos, you would realize that he has a pay membership series of videos called ProPractice. These videos are SAMPLES of his pay content. Besides the video content he works on, the teaching that he does, and his concert schedule, he has always been kind and responsive to comments and questions for his videos. It is an epidemic in this country that people believe they should get a handout. Josh has a right to monetize his talents. Unethical my ass.

I completely agree review collector. If one wanted to really learn this piece, a 22 minute video for $6 made by a CONCERT pianist is a bargain. A concert pianist who has performed in prestigious competitions here and abroad and who is also a doctor in musical arts and on the faculty of a major institution teaching music and piano! The sheer idiocy of some people really amazes me sometimes.

If I remember correctly, this is an ABRSM grade 6. Sure, Its easier than it sounds, and not too difficult for a fairly well-practiced pianist, but it certainly isn't a beginners piece - Unless you define a beginner as somebody that plays at grade 6.

@@powerpointpower4239 I think it's actually Grade 4, according to what others have said on other YT (I've been watching a few as I'm learning this now) and I am around Grade 4 and it's in a book I have which is a collection of various pieces around grade 4. It's not that difficult, but it takes discipline to play it well at tempo.

The level does not matter. Most people in grade 5 or 6 could probably play most of chopins murzukas, but despite this, they are performed in international piano competitions.. albeit to a much much higher stadard.
