Use a stubby ratchet and a 2 in extension stand on a milk crate and you can get your arm in between the manifold and block from the front as long as the power steerimg pump has been removed I know this was an old post but incase others are reading with the same problem I posted an answer anyway

It was really loud. just sounded like an exhaust leak

i think i might have something similar mine is really loud when i start it and the noise stays loud until it warms up. it almost sounds like a valve tap, but it goes away after it warms up. does this sound like a manifold issue?

Crane 2005 it does. I see the same thing on ford trucks, where an exhaust manifold stud will snap off and have the same symptoms. It's really common for them.

Tony Saprano mine did the same thing. My mechanic friend said that it’s the weight of the exhaust fatigues the manifold over time. He says that once it cracks, it’s in a better position. When the cracks are welded, it’s in a better position with less stress. Or something like that. He wasn’t allowed to weld a customer’s manifold so he’d weld the broken ones and install them for friends when theirs cracked.

Weight. Heat cycles . Exhaust taking a bump. Different engine and trans mounts. No exhaust flex. Etc

We can recommend a really bad one.....

the cold air being sucked into those cracks is said to, over time cause warping of the head, but that's just what a few people have told me, it could be an old wives tale.

It'll kill gas mileage and also could get into the vehicle and you'll be breathing in carbon monoxide

Pretty sure Mitchell is right about the CO. Knowing the effects of CO poisoning I know that the cracks on my manifold I am getting poisoned. Now that it's winter and I can't keep the windows down I'm gonna have to fix it...

+JonDinCT This is from a service manual, so if it's a typo, all us mechanics have been doin' it wrong for years... But to be honest, the difference between 17flbs and 23flbs on a steel head is negligible. Thanks for the comment though.

seriously... I put a 350 in a jeep and mad max'ed a front end, made it like a scout tank. my buddies had the same xj since high school, on third engine now, built out a couple others and working on some more, but I got this friend with a police package 99 2 door, and NO FENDERS ARE GOOD ENOUGH!!!! ARRGGGHHHHH F*&CK!!!!!!! Then I was all, " hey theses dudes are sick, and hilarious and yur gonna love this diy bumper episode and then this toyko beast one, and then......." oh I got interrupted because, "WHHAAAAAAAAATTTTTT FLARES ARE THOSE!!!?????!!!!!" and then I'm all, I'll show you, there is gotta be an episode on these magical monsters..........well 9 beers later and sad face cause now apparently I just cant navigate the intewebs, otherwise I would have found your episode.... :( I am in needeth of the helps on basic explanation of how and etc and so ons..... Mad love, nough respect, but seriously, break me off a piece, or just shoot me some super detailed photographs so I can mimic....never copy... but a least seriously work with your amazing ideas on those!
