** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Surely the most daunting and mad ruleset in sudoku history as ViKingPrime decides to merge fog, liar clues AND Schrödinger cells in one puzzle!! This is not for the faint hearted but some of the logic is really incredible. Remember you don't need to guess...!
Have a go at the puzzle here:
sudokupad.app/Gr6P42rgHH
Rules:
Place the digits 0 through 9 once each in every row, column and box; to enable this, each row, column and box contains exactly one Schrödinger Cell ie a cell that contains two digits. The grid is partially covered in fog; placing correct digits in non-Schrödinger cells will clear the fog from the surrounding area (no guessing is required). Each of the standard clue types below occurs exactly three times in the grid; for each, exactly two of the appearances of that clue are correct and the other is incorrect. The clue types are:
- Counting Circles (ie each circled digit counts exactly how many circles contain that digit. All other clue types consider the sum total of a cell as that cell’s value.);
- Dutch Whisper - adjacent cells along an orange line must differ in value by at least 4;
- German Whisper - adjacent cells along a green line must differ in value by at least 5;
- Killer cages - values in a killer cage must sum to small clue in the top left corner of the cage & digits cannot repeat in a cage;
- Kropki dots ie cells separated by a white dot must contain consecutive values & cells separated by a black dot must contain values in a 1:2 ratio (ie one value is double the other); and
- X/V rules ie cells separated by an X must contain values summing to 10 and cells separated by a V must contain values summing to 5.
Disconnected lines within the same cell indicate two separate lines.

ViKingPrime checking in here. This is going to be difficult to fit into a single KZfaq comment but I am going to do my best. Simon - thank you. You've featured a few of my puzzles now and without exception, they have all seemed to fill you with a certain trepidation. And yet... and yet you persevere. Clover (for those who aren't aware, an absolute genius and pillar of the puzzle setting community) has said in multiple interviews, that their favourite puzzles are those where they feel like they're sympatico with the setter, in lock-step, understanding what the setter is trying to communicate. Often times it feels like my own puzzles fall on deaf ears, so contrary are they, so anathema to what many people think a Sudoku puzzle could or should be. The fact that you are willing to step outside your comfort zone, that you are willing to endure the discomfort and uncertainty that I'm told tends to come with my puzzles, and to finally arrive at some kind of understanding with these... it means a tremendous amount to me personally. Its just such a wonderful sensation, to feel like you're being heard. Some day I would like to be able to say I've set a puzzle with the same kind of brilliance, elegance and simplicity of the Aad van de Weterings and Florian Wartmanns of the world; I will continue to work on the craft but for now, I will simply say again, thank you. Amazing solve, you hit all the elements I wanted to highlight in almost exactly the same order as intended. Truly well done.

Mate please keep on making the kind of puzzles you love to make and are really great at… I think it’s lovely that you’ve got your own style that is so distinctive. Have definitely seen you do some more ‘simple and elegant’ puzzles too, but some of the gems you plant in these more complex ones have their own kind of elegance and beauty, and it’s in this kind of puzzle that your personality really shines through 🙌🏻

Hey, I had a small remark for the Dark Mode of the website, I noticed multiple times that Dark Mode reverses the color of Kropki dots, it made me struggle a lot at the beginning (consecutive dots are black, 2:1 ratio dots are white in Dark Mode), so if you want feedback on the beta version of your Dark Mode, I would say Kropki dots in Dark Mode can be confusing.

~@38:00, you can prove the two cells in the 6 cage have to add to 5 using your secret. The digits in box 5 have to sum to 45, and you know that 3 of the cells already add to 10 (the Schrodinger 5, the actual 5, and the zero). We also know that the 6 cage cannot include a 6789, (the zero cannot repeat in row 6 or box 5) which means the four cells outside the 6 cage are a 6789 quad, and add to 30. So to get to 45, the portion of the 6 cage in box 5 must equal 5.

The video length is daunting, but I gave it a try and it's actually pretty reasonable compared to what I expected. I think the Schrödinger ruleset has settled in enough that I didn't fumble it as often on this puzzle, so that helped, but the puzzle maintained a pretty good difficulty where I was often paused, but never really hard stuck.

Wow, what a puzzle and what a solve! This has got to be one of ViKingPrime's greatest works, (and there are a lot of other brilliant contenders!) Whatsmore, this is probably the most quintessentially ViKingPrime puzzle that could possibly exist... a wonderful showcase of the sort of intricate logical trails (especially involving lying clues) that he does so well and have become his trademark. I think I'm right in saying this is one of the puzzles he feels most proud of, so I'm really happy it got featured. The opening was genius, combining Vs and German Whispers in that way, which have such fundamentally incompatible logic. Great idea. And yes I loved the orange train tracks, and the moment it's revealed that they only differ in one place. The two silly 15 cages also made me giggle. Lovely stuff VKP!

It’s not clear to me by 55:47 that there are only 3 circles because 3 circle *clues* could use more than 3 circles. But at the top, the 951 can’t be 950 & the 1 has to clear away from the 1 in the 6 killer.

I got 211 minutes. I don't usually click on longer puzzles but fog of wars always give good focus. I got really confused when the first circles appeared as I knew before the puzzle started that it had to be twos. However, I had a breakthrough moment when I realized that the fake circle may include numbers that in itself don't contribute to the circles clue. It reminded me of King Crimson's ability from JJBA, where he can obliterate time for himself while events still play out, much like these circles clues where two is still contributing to the circle while it removes itself from contributing to other circles. How fun! I, then, made a stupid error and forgot that r1c3 was forced to be a 10 and kept trying to see why 3 was a possibility in r2c3. Of course, that would have made r1c3 seven, which would break the orange line. After that, it was very smooth to the finish.

I usually only attempt puzzles that take Mark and Simon less than an hour to solve. This puzzle looked so interesting I had to give it a try... and it reminded me why I only stick to the simpler puzzles lol I couldn't wrap my head around the rules to save my life; I kept going in circles on R4C4, convincing myself that I could use the 1 to make the whisper true. I'll have to come back to it another day when I have a few more wrinkles on the ol' noggin.

18:13 The German Whispers lines continue off to each side. At least one of them is valid. If you go 5-0-[2,3] or 5-0-[1,4] then you now have a German whisper line with a 5, a 0 and a Schrödinger cell on it, which has to continue beyond a 5; yet both the "trick" cells that would make that possible -- the 0 and the S-cell, which could add to 10 or more -- have already been used. So only one of the Vs in the row is correct, and R5C5 must be 5, [1,4] or [2,3].

I can follow along easily, all steps are logic, but I didn't try to solve this one, because I didn't want to turn my brain into a knotted mess, with all those Schrödinger Cells and stuff. Normally, I takes me about 3 times as long as Simon to solve the puzzles, sometimes I've got to grab a slight hint from him to carry on. Unless he gets stuck somewhere, which happens rarely in my eyes. So, big thanks to Simon for all his puzzles. And ofc Mark too.

@AleksandrYgA
@AleksandrYgA 3 ай бұрын
@@timch5227, that felt unusual but in the end the logic is fine - since it's stated that circles don't use the sum as a value it means if a circle has 2 digits in it - it counts like both digits are in the circle and the circle is correct only if both digits appear in the circles a need amount of times. Like with the lines - incorrect line means that at least one of the adjacent pair of cells is incorrect, other pair may be perfectly fine. But I agree that it should've been stated in the rules more clearly

Fog tip: If you enter a digit that doesn't clear fog because all the surrounding cells already have their fog cleared, you can remove some of the previously validated digits so that the fog returns, then check if the new digit clears the fog or not. E.g. At 59:00, the 9 in r4c6 didn't clear any fog, so it didn't get validated by the fog mechanic. However, if Simon had temporarily removed the 1 above it, and then entered the 9, it would be validated as it would now remove the fog from r3c7. (Then put the 1 back in 🙂).
@stevesebzda570

Lol nice I do that (remove digits to see if the digit I'm going to place is correct). I'm surprised you're mentioned that. That's almost like having the conflict checker on (which I know you're opposed to. I do it though (and use the conflict checker for typos). If it's fine to remove digits (to see if the one you're putting in is correct), that's the same as using the "conflict checker." (I don't use the pencil-mark checker though, it steers you). I'm surprised you're mentioning that clearing digits thing, though, Richard. 😂
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 3 ай бұрын
@@stevesebzda570 True. I'm usually against using the conflict checker. I guess I just see this as a byproduct of the fog of war mechanic. There are times when entering a digit clears fog, and therefore validates the digit. If it happens some of the time, I don't really see a problem in making use of it whenever possible. Maybe that is slightly hypocritical of me though. 🙂☕

@RichSmith77 Yes, it can exist without it. A did a fog one the other day ("a correct digit will not necessarily clear the fog," it went ). It was for the break-in I realized later, but you never knew (yes, all the way through..) That's just that one, though. If in the rules it says "correct digits clear the fog," then yes, it's in there. (NOT "inherently" though ) You're still "checking" to see if it's right, though. Even though I do it (and use it).

Lovely video as always, thanks Simon! For future videos where cell values are different from the actual digits, it would be helpful for the viewers if you'd stick to a single terminology like "values" vs "digits" rather than describing at length the mechanisms each sentence(like schrodinger addition in this case). Perhaps that's just me though. In any case, thank you again for a lovely time watching these videos.

It would have been hilarious to get a circled Schrödinger cell telling the truth. Like... a circled Schrödinger 12, a circled 2 and a lying circle with any other digit. In such a case, both the 1 and the 2 would have told the truth, wouldn't they?
@patrickgass787

That's absolutely correct. You could also have three 3s, coupled with two 2s and some other digit than 1. Lots of fun combinations to think about... maybe that'll come up again sometime.

Wow that is so many rules intertwined, if it wasn't a fog puzzle you'd be so overwhelmed by everything at once. Excited to give it a go even if it takes me multiple days. And poor Simon for not only not having the full rules but being forced to write them down later. Should have jumped in the time machine to read the rules he would later end up writing 😂 This gets me an idea, how would a sudoku variant with time Travel work... oooh

Finished at 94:35 wow I loved this. I made two times an error assuming something I shouldn't have but soon realized and back tracked and noticed that I didn't draw any conclusions from that that I shouldn't have. As said before I needed that one hint from Simon in how to proceed, which was Spoiler noticing that one of the German whispers continuing and being real meant that not both V's on it could be real. After that I figured out everything on my own except one more thing, the circle logic. I was convinced I had broken my puzzle but that's a genius solution on how to incorporate circles in the puzzle.

gif is pronounced by its coiner as jif but as an acronym of its component sounds it is gif and many people analyze the string as gif as it is the ipa(though near high not high) and is the latin reading of those letters(affording english phonotactics on the vowel)

From what I recall, gif is an acronym. And the creator claims the g in gif sound is Not the g sound in the word it abbreviates. So if it abbreviated guage, then it would be jif. Which frankly I believe is incorrect.

I prefer the version that isn't a homophone of jif, since it's clear then that it must be spelled with a G rather than a J, when you hear it spoken. (I'm aware the creator insists otherwise. This mildly annoys me.)

About gif or jif @5:44 or so; Saying it verbally (as jif) is confusing. Many reasons. I don't know where to start. "Jif" is already three other things (One since the 40s or 50s in North snd South America -- and probably in the UK now), "Jif Peanut Butter," to name one. Not to mention "In a jif, and "In a jiffy," both mean "quickly or shortly." (That's how "Jif" got its name, btw-- it morphed "quickly" into "it spreads smoothly and quickly.") So, knowing these things ( verbally mistaking "Jif" as "quickly,") someone is going to hear "quickly" when you say "In a jif" or "In a jiffy." (Not to mention again, the word "jiffy," one branch of some Service, calls that rowboat on a ship "a jiffy" -- I don't know which group -- and you won't find it anyway-- but they could joke from that ship: "Take the Jiffy, it's easier and quicker than bringing the whole ship in.") (They'll crash, or run aground, the joke is , lol ) That's where "in a jiffy" came from (that the peanut butter Jif named itself). EDIT: ^^ I'm not entirely sure which came 1st; "in a jiffy or "in that jiffy/rowboat" It's gif (like the funny gift it is) though.. 😂

As a German speaker, of course the first time I came across the word I used a hard G, but I later learned that the creator of the GIF said it is pronounced Jif. I didn't change my way of pronouncing it at all though. And now knowing a lot more things that are "Jif" (thank you btw), I will never use it lol So officially it is "Jif" since the creator said so, but according to the dictionary both is fine. However there are soo many more variables playing into this, like public surveys, first impressions, the way Obama chose to pronounce it etc. There are dedicated websites about this even and timelines of the debate, it's kinda funny XD I'm team GIF.

17:00 If that is true putting a 0 in the middle and two fives either side what do you put on the next cell of the german whisper at least one of the whispers is correct so on of the fives will touch another whisper cell in the row but that cant be a 0 because of sudoku and cant be a 10 or higher because there is already a schrödinger cell in the row.

Yes, but this is following Standard Killer Sudoku rules (also explained in the description) which include "digits cannot repeat in a cage". So even if you were to put the cage's 1 in R7C7, it still would be a 1 in the cage and therefore "seeing" the 1 in R6C5.

@@estherwestbroek He did. He said there is only one pair of digits where one is double the other (Black) but also consecutive (White), those being 1 and 2. 0, 1, 2 can't work, because 0 times 2 is not 1 and therefore there is no Black Kropki relationship between 0 and 1, only a White Kropki.

GIF apparently should be pronounced with a soft G, like jif - at least according to Steve Wilhite, who was involved in the creation of that format. I admit that it doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but then I imagine pronouncing "graphical" as "giraffical", and it... well, it amuses me. For Tegucigalpa... I know someone from there who referred to it casually as "Teguz", so I'd pronounce that third syllable as closer to SEE than CHEE. ...but then... I amuse myself by thinking of giraffical image files.
