Awesome! Another viewer clued me in on what I thought was an exhaust port is actually an air intake, the filter helps keep dust from getting in and ripping up gasket over time. I cut a sponge and taped in as a filter and is working. Hopefully you got the gasket into cylinder without ripping on first attempt, I needed two, that part was a pain in the A#*.

If so could you provide any info on adjusting the pressure switch?

I twisted the black screw thing in front of the right gauge until it cut off building pressure at140psi vs running until maximum 200. You might have to play around with setting to get where you want. Thanks for watching and good luck with the rebuild!

these rocking piston airless compressors are built under many different names, mine is a devilbiss but it looks exactly the same and uses the same parts. really critical to make sure there is a filter element in the intake housing, these things can't tolerate any dirt or dust going through them as the piston seal is the most fragile part.

Thanks Chaz, I just got a congratulations email from goggle the other day for finally getting 100 subscribers. LOL. I have subscribed to yours. I have a 20 year old Craftsman I used a lot 20 years ago building my house. Last twenty years, not much use. Now and then with a impact gun on vehicles. Cleaned the foam air filter this week and it was only building to around 80 psi. I checked all connections and fixed any small leaks. Today it only went to 40 psi. Took off the shroud and started it to see if maybe the head gasket was bad. All I could hear was the compressor with it running. Turned off and could not hear any air around the head area. The fan turns really easy. Seems no resistance at all. Can see piston going up and down. Weird thing, maybe. I had never run it without the foam air filter. I was expecting the air to be sucked it. Instead it was being blown out. Is that normal? I hate to take the head off, if there is possible something else wrong. Do you have any suggestions. Probably you will say, take the head off and see if that gasket on the piston is torn. Ebay link might also help.

Without an air filter for the intake, that thing was designed to fail early on, especially if you're using it in a dusty particulate environment! The motor shroud is not going to do much to keep dust and dirt out of that piston gasket. Thanks for the video, Chaz! Now I can fix mine, too! ;-) Question: could you have salvaged that old plate with some rust remover like Blaster (Metal Rescue)? Would be good to have an extra one on hand if salvageable!

Yep I agree that what I originally thought was a muffler of some sort is actually the air intake, I’m filtering the air now and hopefully I’ll get another 20 years out of it again. Great video, but your "exhaust port" is actually the intake, and the "foamy thing" is the air filter. The special powers it has keeps debris from entering the cylinder and causing you to rebuild your compressor more often! :)

Hi, I know this is unrelated but I just picked up a used Craftsman 30 gallon compressor that looks just like this and wondered if you can tell me how to change the air filter? Not sure if housing has to come off or not. Mine builds pressure fine but if you shut it off around 40 lbs it has trouble restarting. Just chugs a bit. If you drain air down some, than it will kick on on run to max pressure as set on regulator. Thoughts?

No clue, the extent of my compressor knowledge is what you see in the video; not much. My “guess” would be the gasket that makes the air-tight connection to the piston wall is creased or on weird which is causing it to stick until you help it get going? The only way to find out is to unplug and take it apart. Take pictures of bolts and parts as you are disassembling so you have a reference when you put back together. Look online for parts, try eBay first then Amazon or a local small engine shop if available. Good luck!

Make sure the outlet isn’t the same breaker that powers other items that suck a lot of electricity. My compressor outlet in the garage is on the same breaker as our dehumidifier in the basement, in the summer (now) I have to run downstairs and unplug so I don’t blow the breaker. My compressor starts working and builds pressure up to 150psi but sometimes during work it will not start and won't keep tank charged. Sometimes it turns on only for a few seconds then goes quiet. Sometimes I hears something that it wants to start like air going somewhere through the pipe for about 2 second and then quiets and stays like that. Fails to keep up pressure in tank when I use it. Pressure goes low as 50psi but compressor doesn't start. Then I had to open drain valve to release remaining air pressure in the tank. Disconnect it from AC power for few minutes and it starts working again build up to 150psi again. I don't hear any air leaks. What could be wrong?

why another 100, you can get a kit for about $40 now days, used to be $20 before sears sold craftsman, then the only other thing you need to do is open up the bearing and flush it clean with break clean then repack it with grease, the whole job will cost you about $50 and 30 minutes of your time. a couple words of caution when reassembling, don't over tighten the head bolts, they screw into soft aluminum and can strip pretty easy and you need to wedge the rod when tightening the cooling fan because of you don't get it tight enough the bolt will back out and the cooling fan will start wobbling until it finally explodes......
