This is a step by step video on how to change the carburetor and air filter on the Craftsman M230 163cc push lawnmower. It is easy and anyone can do it as long as you fallow the instructions in this video. If you are looking to just clean this carburetor you can check out my video in the link below. This is just what I needed! Same issue and this worked. Another tip, if you don't have vice grips (I had a pair but weren't the right size) use a small c-clamp to block the hose and it will hold the fuel back.

Very helpful and great detailed instructions. The issue im having though is someone broke off my pull string. I have the new one on there but when i pull it out its not going back its staying all the way pulled out. I mustve messed up the way i put it back together. Trying to a video if you have one on replacing the pull string. But still thanks for your expertise.

Wow that’s a great video! My mower is brand new and is doing that. I’m pretty sure I need to drain the tank but I’m going to go ahead and order the new carb and just clean the whole system out. Thanks for the upload!!

Order the food be that looks closest to your original one from the mower. I no longer have this mower. It was my brothers. I repaired it for him. You should be able to look up your model number on Amazon and get a kit. It should be the first kit that comes up when you search for it.

My front wheel won't move. I had fixed it before but forgot how to take it apart. Can you please do a video on it so I will be able to take it apart and get whatever is jamming it again.

Hey man, any chance you got the part number / link for this kit? Also, if the mower is sputtering would changing the spark plug be an option as well? Thanks ahead of time!

Click on this link. It is the kit I used in this video. Comes with extra parts that you may not need. But it’s the best kit for the price so far. I recommend changing the spark plug and air filter to help with spluttering. Also check your gas hoses for leaks. It might be sucking air. The carburetor could also have a bad gasket. My mower is one years old and I used it on a half acre lot last season. The filter looks almost clean and so I'm wondering if there's anything else I should try. The thing turns but won't start

Have you checked your spark plug or spark plug wire? Possibly the air filter. Might try getting a can of starter fluid. Change your gas out also.

Swapped my carburetor out after my mower was starting and dying quickly. Now I get nothing at all. Seems so simple but no luck for me. Anyone have any thoughts?

I know it’s a pain. But make sure your carburetor float is not stuck. Also make sure all your hoses are not cycling air. Check the spark plug to see if it is firing correctly.

I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve never had anyone tell me it would start. Try it a few time (you probably already have). Sometimes it takes awhile to start because the new carburetor has to fill and the air has to get out of the lines. Make sure a hose didn’t come loose. The larger one behind the air filter. Double check your linkage. Let me know? Oh, try starter fluid to get it going.

@@henrygaitan410 sounds like you do need a new carburetor. Possibly a good cleaning. You could check your mower gas line for leaks also. But a new carburetor should solve the problem. Thanks for watching my video.

@jmadrid41 you are very welcome. Keep in mind, when buying most carburetor kits. You will not need or use every part that comes with it. I can’t remember if I made that clear in my video.

I did everything your video says and shows and it doesn't turn on. What else can I check before taking it to a shop to have it fixed. I don't want to pay a lot of money.

You changed the carburetor and hooked everything ack up correctly. When you pull the string to start it, it won’t start at all? Does it sound like it’s trying? Sometimes when a new carburetor is installed it takes a number of tries because the gas needs to fill the carburetor. Plus there may be some air in the lines. You could try using starter fluid to help it start. You may check and change your spark plug and air filter. It’s a little tough to say what might be wrong without being there and listening to it while it is being started. But check these things and let me know please.

@@rjguess What I did was this... I bought the spark plug and filter at the Ace hardware store and I put them in the machine and it didn't start. Then I bought the carburetor on Amazon and next to the carburetor there was another spark plug and hose to connect it to the gas but I left the same one that the machine had and I didn't put the spark plug that came with the carburetor either... and that was 2 days after I did everything That makes it seem like it's going to turn on but not completely.

Ok, so no need to do anything with the filter or spark plug. You have new ones installed! Good! You also have the new carburetor installed. The next thing I would say is. Make sure your linkage on the carburetor is connected good and moving back and forth as it should when you pull the handle bar to start it. Try using started fluid. Make sure the gas is good. Make sure your oil is not to full or too low. After spraying started fluid into the carburetor by the air filter, give it few tries.

@@rjguess a question... there is something that is like a filter that is cleaned with a water hose that is on the right side near the carburetor... what is it called?

I know what you’re talking about now. You attach the water hose to that. It cleans the underneath of the deck and around the blade off after you mow. This is so you do t need to tip your mower up to wash it out if grass is stuck.

Just clean out the needle and jet and save yourself some money.

That is one way to but if certain parts are bad. It has to be replaced. In this video, cleaning alone was not going your way fix the problem. There was a worn out part. The kit is cheap anyway.
