Former Socceroos captain and respected football analyst Craig Foster has been an outspoken, sometimes controversial public broadcaster, driven by an unrivalled passion for the game.
But privately, he has led another life, working with those less fortunate than himself.
And in November last year, when a fellow football international, Bahraini refugee Hakeem Al-Araibi, was arrested in Thailand and threatened with extradition back to the country where he had been imprisoned and tortured, Craig Foster led a global campaign to free him.
Now he and Hakeem reveal the full story of that campaign, and how close it came to disaster.

“Unfortunate detention in Thailand” has to be the understatement of the decade. Hakeem was so so close to being sent back to Bahrain where I believe there is little doubt about the outcome if that had occurred. The day that Hakeem was walked out in handcuffs and leg chains really was a defining moment. I honestly believe that if someone hadn’t been there to shout out support as Craig did, if the world’s media hadn’t been the to capture and broadcast that interaction.... then I think that Hakeem’s story would be very different indeed. Love him or hate him, what Craig Foster did saved Hakeem and his family’s future and possibly his life. For that I am incredibly grateful. I just hope that Graig himself is getting the support that he needs. Watching him speak in front of waiting media, and then at later events, his emotions are very evident and close to the surface. As a human being watching him become emotional, my reaction was of concern for his wellbeing. He mentioned feeling incredible guilt for the many other people caught up in asylum and refugee detention and that must be an enormous weight to bare. Thanks mate for what you did for Hakeem back then. Take care of yourself and all the best to you and yours. 🙂🐿🌈❤️ [sydney australia]

Wrongly accused and unable to speak his opinions in his own country. And top politicians trying to blame him for lost votes-- that's ridiculous

Bring home Assange!! Why so much effort for a refugee and not an Australian?

Why a refugee, allowing to travel ? And I thought he was arrested in Thailand, while playing for Australia in a soccer game there ? So he was arrested because he went there for his honeymoon ?

He was arrested for a crime he did not commit in Bahrain. He is a political refugee in Australia as the country wanted to arrest him despite a strong alibi.

Query 2...Where is the ABC and Australian Story and every Australian journalist with the slightest sense of morality while Julian Assange rots in foreign prisons and is slowly being killed in full public view ? Come on Australia.

And the biggest joke is, international news reported that he was arrested in Thailand while playing for Australia national team, so we thought he was arrested while playing an international game there, then that's not right. No, he was on honeymoon. Why is a refugee allow to travel ? And he don't have an Australian passport and he can play for Australia ?

@@janjanbeckham8 you know why ? because they are all f......en sellouts 😠 please please man from somewhere in the world.... please make us win something. Then you are Australian. If you reverse it , it is ridiculous. Imagine me playing for China and then now I'm Chinese .......f....en dumb. Even in 100 years and multiple children later we would not be Chinese 😠 or Africa or Japanese or middle eastern.
