Fortunately for us, Craig was on his way up from Missouri and decided to stop by and hang out.
This is Dalton writing to you, you may have noticed that WR founder Brandon and Craig share a similar last name.
THAT IS because they are Father and son.
But I am here to tell you that we carry Council Tool, undeniably because of Craig.
Unfortunately, our company and Craig's reputation is in doubt because of his relationship with Brandon.
The long and the short of it is - I have never met anyone more focused on improving the design of axes than Craig.
I have never met someone so knowledgeable when it comes to axe history as Craig.
Craig is a one-man museum.
I can not understate how much of a wealth of knowledge this man is. The fact that Council had enough foresight to bring them on to their team speaks to their commitment to creating the best American Made axe they can make.
I'll stop myself before I start rambling...
This is a MUST WATCH.

So cool to watch the designer explaining the changes that improve the performance of their axes. I wonder what are changed on the velvicut saddle axe, as it’s also marked as “new” with a different SKU.

I already loved whiskey river trading and when Brandon said that Craig Roost was his Dad it just made me love whiskey river trading even more. I think that is awesome. Been watching Craig roost for a few years on youtube and learned a good bit about the history of axes and so forth. Great stuff from Craig and Brandon. Thanks guys.

So happy to see a hardened poll on the new Hudson bays. Such an important detail to have on a hatchet. It’s awesome to see Mr.Roos himself. I still cherish the axe junkie sheath he made for my boys axe many years ago. Keep up the fantastic work! Ohhh any ETA on the shears coming back into stock? They are without a doubt the best pair of shears I’ve ever owned.

One issue I think Council Tools should fix is the issue with their sheaths. In the booklet for their Camp Wood Carver series, it says not to store your axe in its sheath (the darker leather sheaths that they make); this tells me that the leather used is a Chrome-tanned leather and not a veg-tanned leather; Chromium salts leave the leather slightly acidic, which can rust steel over time. A sheath is made to store an axe and or knife and should always be made with veg-tanned leather. If they want a darker colored leather, they should opt for an English Bridle Veg-tanned leather. Then, the (lighter colored) veg-tanned option that they do make for their cheaper axe line doesn't look like it has a welt, a piece of leather between the rivets, so the blade isn't resting against the rivets. I think Council Tools makes great axes; they shouldn't cut corners on their sheaths.

Speaking of Tomahawks...Would love to see a US made large hawk/slip fit 1.2-1.5lb axe (like a Rinaldi but more balanced with hammer). Call it the Mountainman Multi tool or somethin... I will have to sign up for your newsletter, the flying fox with a 21" straight handle sounds great! I have a couple of the new Hudson Bay axes on the way now, interested to see how they do. I am a weekend warrior when it comes to wood processing but when I do carrying a larger axe I am normally using it to split wood for camp (as you stated) so it is good to hear it has been optimized for that task. Thanks for the video.

I own a council sledgehammer, engineers hammers,Michigan double bit,and fss boys axe. The forestry service axe lives in my truck and the double bit sees splitting duty periodically. I usually split with a 8lb maul,but pull out an axe when I've got some good straight grained hardwood to split. I bought my brother in law the camp axe with the hardened poll last Christmas since he's big into bushcraft. Its held up well and he loves it. I use my forestry axe for limbing and splitting kindling and it's great for that.

@WhiskeyRiverTradingCo

I would say just purely from a splitting standpoint the Hudson Bay is going to be better. The profile of the axe with the high center line allows it to be easier to split with.

Dang, I never knew that Rooster (hi!) was your father Brandon! I've known of Rooster from MWTCA, and he sold me my first Camp Carver at Canoecopia when it first came out some years ago. I've since bought a longer handled Camp Carver from WRT, and a number of other CT tools. ( I might need that permission slip, but I never let my wife see my axe collection, so she has no clue. One axe looks like another, right?). One request: I have a Flying Fox, and an instructional video from a pro would be useful and interesting. (maybe your lawyers won't let you ;-) )

I'm thinking the opposite. You lost some customers, me, at least for this shape. You could have found a way to harden the pole and reliably kept the head on and kept the shape too. It's only my opinion from a newbie who's doing his research, but I would have liked the smaller piece of steel to fit my fingers and hand around to do some carving, After I used it to chop wood down to the size I wanted. To me you took a good shape and made it harder for bushcrafting. ie carving. I'm sure if I looked more, you make something for my use already. I just came across this video doing research. Thanx for a good product. Many people have commented me back and told me to check you guys out . Have a great fall and winter ❄️. ✌️🦁 From San Diego 🤣🤣🤣 The end of the video shows me a bc axe. Stop confusing me 🤣.

Why not use the round axe wedge, isn't that superior over a standard wedge as it wedges in all directions in the eye of the axe or hammer?
@WhiskeyRiverTradingCo
@WhiskeyRiverTradingCo Жыл бұрын
Believe it or not all of us at Whiskey River that hang vintage axes never use steel wedges. The mast produced stuff just has it for the perception. The steel wedge does nothing if the axe is hung correctly. The average consumer thinks it's needed.

I just received my hudson bay 2# 18"... And I'm really disappointed... I really wish I would have gotten the older version... The one i got is crooked and has a tilt in the head and is hung wrong... but my biggest complaint is the design, the cutting edge is like 2 inches from the handle, and very thick checks.. the head is just way too short IMO for a 2-lb axe... This is my first council tool axe... and not what I expected at all... I paid above $70 for this and very disappointed... I have two of the 28" handle versions on order should be receiving them in next couple of days.. I hope one of the will be the old version... This should be labeled as a log splitter not a Hudson Bay Pattern... If I wanted a log splitter I would have searched for that... very disappointed on "This" Design
