I went to UTI in '99 and part if it was 9 weeks of "Hot Rod U", where we basically got to play with different mods on cars and run them on the chassis dyno. Long story short - We put a $350 K&N cold air intake kit on a bone stock '95 Z28, and it LOST 13hp to the wheels. Put the stock airbox back on, and the power came right back. Keep up the great work! People NEED to hear about these things. Just curious... Have you seen all of the people on this site that are claiming that you don't need gasoline, and are just running their cars on the fumes? LMAO.. If you haven't, it's worth looking up!

Finally someone else thank you so much for talking about the straight pipe exhaust. I myself work at a BMW tuning shop and I drive a BMW station wagon that has an incredibly quiet stainless steel exhaust. I also added extra valves to the exhaust that open a different pressures and RPMs to make the exhaust much more quiet. The valves are indeed mapped and tuned to the engine computer. The engine itself is cammed ported and higher compression Pistons. Not super killer race car but I'm very happy.

Also worth mentioning, lowering springs and quality shocks for $500 are going to perform way better than $500 coilovers

There is a guy called Matt who has a channel called "The workshop" He is an engineer who goes over alot of these bogus mods and aftermarket products aswell as going into detail on how things work ect ect. He is also known to call out bullshit misinformation from other youtubers such as Mighty car mods and jason from Engineering explained. He's stuff also highly revolves around motorcycles but most of the stuff crosses over to us car guys His content is A+ if you really want to learn how shit works.

I remember the magic super chip they used to sell way back in the days, late 90's early 2000's. It was basically just a resistor in a nice package. I know some numbnuts that fell for the gimmick.

Just subscribed... Great vid! I'm 43 and just recently finished the 1st step in my 1st serious build. I'm the sorta guy who goes against the "meta". In my city of Louisville, KY most people are building Chargers, Mustangs, 370 Zs, WRX STIs and the occasional 5 & 3 series BMW. I decided to be stupid and build a MINI Cooper S Clubman. It's most definitely NOT what everyone is building. I discovered why that is about midway through the 1st part of my build... Adjustable Gecko coilovers, AEM cold air/ram air intake, Ignition Projects coils, Forge intercooler, AEM water/methanol injection kit, 100% Forge hose/pipe replacement, 380cc MM high flow injectors, 41mm BorgWarner Airwerks SX K03 dual scroll turbo & upgraded feed line , turbo line replacement kit with NM Engineering SS Braided line, Clutch Masters FX400 Racing clutch/light weight flywheel kit, Craven Speed on-the-fly adjustable short throw shifter, Magnaflow full race catless exhaust and an aggressive stage 3 tune from Malone Tuning. I've also gutted everything that I don't need on the interior and replaced my seats with some cheap Recaros. Before the upgraded turbo when I was just running a full bolt-on set up I was pushing 20lbs of boost with the stock turbo... The difference the first Malone tune that abled me to push that boost was freaking incredible! Driving my car home after that 1st tune was an insane reality check for me. I knew that a good tune could deliver performance, but in my mind great performance from a tune only existed in expensive builds that replaced internals. I never imagined that I could experience such a great power gain with only decent bolt-ons from a tune, but there I was experiencing it! After the bigger turbo I had to decrease my boost from 20lbs to 15lbs to avoid over boost. Despite less boost, my air was more compressed and the change was drastic. So drastic that I had to completely switch from Cinturato P7s to P Zero Corsas so I could get traction up front. 0-60 runs are a decent mid 4s... 60-120s are ridiculous! It's not the fastest MINI or the fastest tuner, but it sure is a helluva sleeper that I built more "For the Curves" than straight lines. The downfall is that the car is so fragile that I am afraid to step on the gas from fear of blowing up. Seriously! I knew MINIs were train wrecks to maintenance, but I figured if I built the car right, didn't slack on anything and took good care of her that the car would treat me good. Errgh... If the car wasn't so fun to drive and the work I put into the project so damn intense and expensive I would probably get rid of my MINI. I'm in so deep now though that I might as well finish what I started. I'm working on internals now. Running up on Hellcats is so much fun! When they won't pull up next to me at the next light because they got beat by a MINI stationwagon is great. Then my car breaks at the next light and they roll by me laughing! I love the channel and subscribed due to the no nonsense, in your face and to the point facts. There is no sugar coating and everything is told like it is and as it should be!

In most testing i’ve done over the years, about 90% of aftermarket add ons reduce horsepower, but increase noise levels. Or at best do nothing at all.

This reminded me of a really good memory from high school. Our auto shop teacher told us about an additive salesperson who was given the opportunity to demonstrate his product to a high school class. He claimed the product was so good, an engine could run for HOURS without oil after running this additive. Shop had a few engines on stands, set up to run for diagnostic training. So, they follow the directions to the absolute letter, letting this guy give his spiel while running the engine in. Drained the oil out, dude's still SUPER confident that this product is God in liquid form. To its credit, the engine did run..... for about five minutes before it seized so brutally that it actually cracked the block itself in half.

When i heard about the "plug in" ECU kit, i literally went speechless that ppl actually went for it

For any mods done on my 03 Marauder like the S/C install & tuning, I consulted my Marauder club. They have a wealth of info & knowledge of what is good or bad mods. They saved me big money over the years.

Ironically split electrode spark plugs do exist still. Not necessarily power related but “full burn” advertised. I supposed if you’re basically filling your cylinders with methanol maybe that’s a thing.

Great piece Craig! Your last point should be one of the first things enthusiasts should do... learning to drive correctly and to keep it on the track. I've seen so many people trash their cars after modifying them because they believed their car was now more capable...but their skills had not changed. I went to racing school many years ago... I learned the dynamics of a car in various conditions. It makes the world of difference understanding how to drive.

I love reading the reviews on the electric superchargers. There's a few 5 star reviews that all say the same generic "Wow! Love this thing! Works great!" and then the rest are all 1 stars talking about how they didn't notice any gains and there was even one I read were the cheap blades came apart and went into his engine. He had to replace the engine on a brand new GMC. Yeah have fun with that.

Straight piping a car, or removing the muffler, will not affect scavenging. Most if not all of exhaust scavenging occurs in the header primaries. By the time exhaust gases reach the muffler area, they have expanded and slowed down. If anything the lack of back pressure will always make more power. Its been proven over and over on the dyno and track. Of course, header primary design and pipe diamter should be correct for the application. We're talking soley for performance here

Great video! This should be a requirement to watch for anyone who is considering modifying their car for the first time (or 2nd). Anything beyond a bolt-on intake and exhaust, I'd also recommend upgrading your brakes, suspension and possibly clutch to better handle the substantial increase in power.

NGK Spark Plugs have been the best ones I've used so far personally on my 425 Olds.

He's right about late model muscle cars and modding, you've got to tune after adding performance parts etc. Even a simple canned tuner works, I've got a diablosport for my Challenger and plugs right into the OBD port. They are a must have for performance vehicles and use mine every time I add a new part or change the octane rating whenever I run race fuel in her. Even after changing to a different size of tires & wheels, the computer will need to be adjusted in order for the speedometer to read correctly and only takes a couple of minutes to do

Remember back in the 80's there were several mods that claimed to reduce emissions and fuel economy. One did this by seemingly leaning out the carb, usually leading to lots of "pinging" every time you even looked at a hill as the engine started to detonate.. Another was nothing more than an adjustable fuel flow valve on the fuel line into the carb having similar effects..

Back in the day I had ran splitfire plugs in my 3.1 sunbird and my lawn mower. Graig you forgotten to mention magnets on fuel lines they increase mpg. Also we can't forget about zmax if Carroll Shelby used it in his cars it has to work.

I strongly recommend it to learn your own cars handling and wish I could get my teens interested in cars, though one likes initial d so there is hope. It has probably saved my life on several occasions when I was able to instinctively use those skills and knowledge in emergency accident avoidance situations. Always got a laugh from the older guys when I pulled in and proceeded to spend 45 minutes stripping my huge stereo system (twin 10”s behind the seats, kick panel 6.75s vented into the body cavity, multiple amps, etc) with all its extra weight out of it, leaving a huge pile of audio parts nearly half the size of the car in my parking spot to go race... then had to stuff it all back in at the end of the day. I only had the one car back then, so it was my race car, daily driver, highway cruiser and car stereo car as well. Good times. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Craig.

This is most of what I’ve tried to tell people for a very long time. Something advertised to make 10 h/p just might.... at 7500 rpm. Too bad your car peaks at 4500 rpm. And don’t buy a cold air kit if you really need ball joints and brakes.

It's not just the car magazines. Same thing with magazines covering pretty much any product. See it all the time in the firearm,archery, wishing, and hunting ones my wife and I subscribe to, as well as the bike ones. Love the increased power claims with 2 pipe systems on big twins, as they are designed with a 2 into 1, from the factory, for a reason, IE, maximum torque. Go to a 2 pipe set up, you lose torque on twins over 1500 ccs. With.maybe, a 2 to 3 hp gain, at most. And shout out to NGK. Been using their plugs in my bikes, since I was 10. With the little single cylinder dirt bikes. They make a great product.

Tuning a ecu is much easier than old carburators that for sure, about the straight pipes agree 100% most ppl dont even drive or race with the engine at the rpms where such a exhaust would improve perfomance so they end losing power and get annoying with the amount of noise these exhaust make and they are 4 stroke engines so it aint going to improve that much anyways compared to the amount a exhaust improves a 2 stroke.

A lot of the Focus ST community is removing the active shutter system and going to a bigger inter cooler to help cool the cold side air more

Another thing people forget is upgrading drive trains, if your putting a lot of HP to your motor your stock drive train can handle that power until a a certain point. Perfect example my 2006 Cadillac Escalade, I’ve got a stage two Texas speed cam, heads, short headers, both cats deleted with full exhaust, bigger injectors, and a tune from hell. All with a 100% stock 4L60E transmission, one of the absolute worst transmissions to be bolting power up too. Quite frankly I’m surprised it hasn’t blown as of yet but it will be getting upgrades whether it blows or not cause eventually it will go, it’s just a matter of time.

This is great for the kids that have no idea about performance but with some stuff your leaving plenty of room for improvement with what your saying a great example of this is what you covered in intakes most off the shelf units are rubbish the ideal air box/intake setup is large enough that it won’t run out of air (I vaguely remember reading somewhere that cosworth recommend 2.5x an engines swept volume) and has the least amount of pressure drop between atmospheric and ether the throttle or supercharger device depending on application

Magnets around fuel lines to polarize fuel before it gets into the carburettor (where it promptly is dumped into a float bowl) - I figured this out the first time I saw a diagram of a carburettor at 12 or so.

I did Skip Barber back in 2004 (3 day at Road America) and 2006 (advanced 2 day at Watkins Glen). I used to drive my e36 m3 to RA, but haven’t gone back in years. This year I plan on going at least once in my f87 m2

I have a caveat to the Gran Turismo point, which honestly won't apply to most people so the general point still stands. A little bit of backstory and then I'll get to my own point. I have a friend that was a mostly self taught "street racer" in the early 00s, progressing from Maximas to an 04 WRX to eventually a stock 99 Civic Si. He took that Civic and completely whooped on people in his SCCA class for years in the latter 00s, being one of the most winning drivers in the New England region at the time. The guy made it to SCCA nationals a number of times in that car, dunno exactly where he wound up placing but it was in the top 30ish% at least. The Civic eventually became noncompetitive and outclassed, but he continued running with borrowed S2ks which he again went to nationals in frequently. Hell, there was one time I watched him run a snow rally cross in a clapped early 90s grand prix on Nokian tires and he upset people badly. The WRX, Evo, and Audi drivers could not handle having their asses handed to them from a fwd junker with a better driver. So the point is, during this guy's off season time, he ran Gran Turismo constantly with a wheel rig. I would hang out over there and he'd just be running laps non stop, as far back in time as GT4 but presumably still on the most recent game to date. The dude taught me quite a lot of driving technique from that old janky simrig alone. He's even had to create alternate accounts so people in the league wouldn't freak out when seeing he was racing them on his known one. To add a little more to the backstory, he's IRL friends and raced with a few of the finalists in the very first GT Academy program, I believe the ones that I can recall are the Barbados brothers but I know there's a few more. Also, moonlighted as an accredited race instructor for SCCA stuff in the past. We also live pretty close to Lime Rock, which has a Skip Barber school as i'm sure you're aware. He's turned some fire laps at that track too.

I had those split fire spark plugs way back when they fist came out in the uk,, we had a few tuning shops then, motor world, road runner, but to name a couple,, most are gone now,, with all the utube channels and Internet, PLUS YOUR AWESOME channel we now know better,,, we just get conned on a car shop that sells all kinds of things for your car its called HALFORDS, or to us brits WE call it HALFRAUDS,, dont know if you got that shop in America or something similar that charges extortionate prices,,,,, anyway keep up the AWESOME channel, and god bless,,,

Oh split fire plugs. I remember in the late 90's my dad bought a set for his silverado. It ran so terrible with them, they lasted in there for about 2 days before he removed them. I blame those infomercials that advertised them as the greatest thing. I also remember people STILL coming in and asking for those things when I worked at advance auto parts throughout college from about 2005-2008. I always tried my best to explain to people that they were garbage, but some people just couldn't be convinced...

That electronic turbo also have it own danger, the blade of the "turbo" could snapped and get sucked in into your intake and ultimately your pistons.

Larger than factory wheels will also slow your car down. So don't put 17's on your Civic

"We've all seen faster cars lose to slower because of the driver" Oh man do i have a fun story with that. Only about a month or 2 ago i was at a stop light in my COMPLETELY STOCK 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan, when a newer(id guess about 2015-2017) Chevy Camaro pulled up beside me. I found out quickly, the guy had a stick. I was taking my wife to work, and was dead stopped at the light. He was almost stopped, but still rolling slightly. The light turned green and i pushed the pedal a little bit(at this point neither of us revved our motors to signal we wanted to race.) I dont know if he had a modified exhaust or if the stock is just a little loud, but i heard his exhaust get loud and seen him kinda quickly catching up and nearly passing. I floored my van! I was about a fender ahead the whole way until he let off due to traffic that we were catching up to and i let off because that stop light that traffic was at was my turn. The reason i was able stay ahead was he didnt know how to shift his car. It took him a couple seconds to shift each time. During that long shifting period my van was in the power band of the motor and i started to pull away. He would then get it in gear and catch up quickly, but by the time he caught up it was time to shift again. When we slowed down, i looked over and both of us had the biggest smiles on our faces. It was great. Would i do that again. Maybe, only with him, until he learns to shift correctly and quickly. Once that happens, i know i dont stand a chance, but to just see what the back end of his car looks like. Regardless, it was fun. The drive to my wifes work was actually aggravating with idiots driving waay under the limit or cutting me off, until that "race". That made the rest of my day. I actually still smile when i see a similar looking newer camaro.

Splitfire plugs..... a child of the 80s like me..... only additive I use is redex, once every 4 or 5 tank fill ups, keeps the valves free from deposits caused by the additives in modern petrol..... 👍
