In this video, I'm photographing some old Hoppers' Huts that I came across on a dog walk recently.
These huts were built to house the seasonal workers that mostly came down to Kent from London to pick the hops for the local brewing industry. Whole families would travel down for around six weeks each year. The huts were single-storey and double-room, made of brick with a corrugated iron roof. They were built in blocks and the pickers shared communal cooking and washing facilities too (which are also in the photos).
I took the photos on my MPP 4x5 large format camera with a 135mm lens. The Fomapan 100 sheet film was processed using Kodak XTOL (1+1) for 8 mins.

Sometimes you just don't want to say anything. I've been wanting to make a video with only natural sound for a while now. Ironically, it took me twice the time to edit this one. How does that happen? I hope you like it. Comments, likes, new subs, shares etc are always much appreciated. Thanks for watching.

I never say anything on my videos but often use music along with natural sounds. I always find the naturel sound bit difficult mostly due to either wind noise or traffic noise even when it's from a distance ! I find I have to sit editing out the traffic noise etc.... and it takes ages. So I understand what you are saying because I often think it would be easier to talk. I really enjoyed this so it was worth the extra effort spent :D Thank you

Luckily, this was in an area of minimal traffic noise which is always the killer for a peaceful woodland type shoot. I could have done with a few more cows and sheep though.

I rather like your commentary but I found this to be super cool! Kudos for managing to capture the sounds so well! I kept looking to see where you might be keeping the mic (never could find it). Glad I'm not the only one that enjoys the sounds of 4x5 cameras as well.

Amazing as always in this non-spoken video. Pictures are worth, what? a thousand words? This process of visualization, patience, and technique are exemplary. I totally get it- what you are going for and the results. From the mundane artifact to the art. Thanks to you I am using Fomapan as well with my 4x5 Wista-a new adventure. Of course Barney is a reassuring presence.

Wonderful Craig. Photography is like art, let the painting and images speak for themselves! I love the peace and tranquility I get when walking and just in my "zone". Indeed I just came back from 3 hours walking around the meadows and wetlands near my house, starting at 5.30 in the morning and the subdued light, birds singing and peace is sublime! The photos I took speak for themselves. More of this please.

Loving the "ambient" episode. I would reckon not the easiest thing to produce - making sure all sounds are there for the view to hear etc. Just read your comment below and not surprised it took longer to edit. Spring is a great time to do this because of birdsong etc. Great job on the filming, editing etc - oh ye, and I like the end result (images) too.

Capturing three photos, separately every interval by using, the classic view camera, is something very interesting and enjoyable, with a black and white flat film, that needs to develop every shot separately, in to adjust exposure manually by spot meaning, is something of great effort and more patient, so my heartedly congratulations for your awesome Artwork dear Craig wishing you more continuation, of success for seeing more of your expressive Artwork.

I’ve been going back through your videos and watching them over again, really enjoyable watching your process of capturing moments. This video especially resonated with me with the subject matter and the silent video. These places are important parts of history, not sure about in the UK how these places are viewed but many places like these in Australia are not protected and/or suffer decay and sadly fall to ruin. It’s great you’ve got a record for posterity. Do you know if these buildings are protected and want their future is?

Sometimes we don't need to hear anything Craig. Regardless of the extra time editing, it was enjoyable to tag along and watch you snap a few frames. Nicely edited and super photographic results. Barney as usual was an essential part in the production. Cheers from Canada.

@CraigPrentis I really enjoy your informative and well executed videos especially on the 5x4 camera,thank you! Question: What is the size of the filter, step-up ring and filter holder you used on the 135 mm lens? Again thanks and keep sharing!🤗
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kern. That particular set up was a bit long-winded. The 135mm lens has a 40.5mm thread so it was 40.5 to 52mm, 52-77mm, then on to the 77mm Lee filter holder. Those filters are a bit too big for this set up but the system is covering quite a few lens sizes that I have (or had in the past).

Hi Craig... really enjoyed the video, it's good to see you're always trying new things... would you ever consider making a video about shooting film at night?
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Max. Yes, I may do something at night. I've got three rolls of Lomography 800 colour neg 120 in the fridge so that could work in the right conditions.

Another great video! • I think the ken burns style of showing the negatives is really cool, it gives a great perspective of the Negative to Positive. • I noticed some blurry edge at the top of the second image, Was that because of the ND filter or is just some leaf movement happening? The quality of the video looks really good too.
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Well spotted with the second image. Yes, it has lost some sharpness - I think it's due to a combination of pushing the lens to its limits, the front rise (quite a bit) and slightly dodgy camera movements on my part. I'm still learning every day with that old camera and focusing is a little tricky when movements are required.

Hi Craig, really enjoyed this! It was a very welcome break from videos where people just talk too much! There's a great sense of what you experience, especially helped by the lav mic and the excellent continuity of filming. On the subject itself, have you considered Tyneham? I've never been but read about it. Good work, well done. Even better would be a proper darkroom print ;) Best wishes. Juno x

Hi Juno, thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I think I'll do some more of these 'quiet' ones. I've quite enjoyed the sound recording side of doing these videos and I'm always trying to improve on the quality and the overall experience for the viewer. No I haven't been to Tyneham, but it looks an interesting place. One day, I'll get myself set up with a darkroom. That would finish the analog process off quite nicely. Cheers.

Yes, please, more ‘quiet’ ones. There’s a bunch of us out there who love the sharing of experience and less of the ‘this is how you should do it’ banter’ 😊
