My dad and I went to see this in theaters in a full auditorium. Usually there's always those few people that are immediately out of their seats once the credits start but there was a good 15-20 second still silence in the room. Like, you could feel people processing it. Lines leaving was similar to a funeral procession, wasn't much chatting from people, just everyone leaving quietly. I feel your pain at that ending, believe me! LOL! It's a real gut punch. This is such an underrated film. It's nice to see more people discovering it. Interesting tidbit: Darabont credits Jeffrey DeMunn for the reappearance of Melissa McBride's character at the end (along with her two children), showing she'd made it back to them and they'd all survived. Originally, she was supposed to disappear into the mist, with her fate left unknown. But McBride's performance in the grocery store scene so impressed the cast and crew that they gave her a standing ovation. Darabont said DeMunn later came to him and said he couldn't stop thinking about her performance and wondering what happened to her character, so he suggested bringing her back at the end. Also, when they were casting the role of Carol in TWD, they called and offered it to her without requiring an audition, due to her performance in The Mist.

You know he can't help but wonder if his son would also be alive if they'd gone with her to begin with. The novella ends on an unresolved note with a tiny glimmer of hope. Frank Darabont, however, wants to teach us never to lose hope in the most brutal way possible. I very much enjoy unconventional and downer endings, so you can imagine my sick shit-eating grin when i first saw the ending to this film. 😄

I hadn't seen this since it came out, I didn't realize both Andrea and Carol were in this too! And frankly, "too realistic" yeah I agree, stories about raw, unprocessed human nature are nothing new, King added this spin on it back in 1980, and it's unsettling to continue recognizing all of this behavior so clearly. A different fun fact: King admitted that Darabont scared him with his own story, he got the creeps a few times and that hand on the window made him jump in his seat 😄 I LOVED Marcia Gay Harden in this, I thought she devoured that part and left no crumbs, and for me, Mrs. Carmody is hands down the scariest monster. I've known people just like her, they'll take every advantage to convince people to believe their twisted perspective. One of my favorite roles of hers was in _A Gaudi Afternoon,_ she's still devious but WAY more fun.

And Darabont said the fact that he scared King was one of the highlights of his career too. 😉

The director had the TWD actors in his previous work, too; he actually met the actress who plays Carol when she came in for this movie and she made an impression on him.

I love your reactions, as always, girl! I remember seeing this movie when I was younger, and I loved it, but was also scared.

Almost everything in this movie is the same as the book...except the ending. The book ends with them still driving from town to town, scavenging supplies, and coming to the realization that this is just the world they have to survive in now. Very hopeless. They created this new Tragic ending for the movie and Stephen King loved it. He was basically like, why didn't I think of that? lol. Great reaction.

Good tragedies are so hard to find, and well I get they are not everyone's cup of tea this movie is such a great example of how to do them well.

For those who loved the ending, I could have been way worst. Darabont wanted to have a second military transport pass and show some of the supermarket's survivors aboard. Darabont didn't shoot the scene because of scheduling.

When I first saw this in theaters I enjoyed it until that Ending! I remember walking out of that theater wanting to punch a wall I was so mad! Then I went to go watch Disney's Enchanted afterwards and I felt better lol!

The Painting at the beginning is of Roland Deschain of the Gunslinger novels Steven King also wrote. All of his books take place in same shared universe and connect together in one way or another.

I'm extremely split on the ending, but one thing I liked was that it focused on some people who did NOT get a happy ending. It was like a deconstruction of typical Roland Emmerich disaster movies.

The Mist is one of my favs. I didn't like the ending at 1st, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. I also preferred it more over the original novels ending that Stephen King had written. Nonetheless, the movie had a very H.P. Lovecraft feel to it, which also makes sense considering that he's King's favorite author & had his influence on other novels by King such as IT & The Dark Tower series. Speaking of IT, that would be another great film combo to see if you haven't yet? It's a lot better than the original mini series on ABC, lol.

it's definatly more modern than the miniseries. I feel like they dropped the ball tho IMO. if IT is ever going to be done right it has to be in animation form, I think.

"Yay, it's the military, we're saved... Oh" You always depose the zealot immediately, it's enough to deal with deadly danger outside without someone riling up scared people making them dangerous to each other.

Absolutely loved your reaction. The ending in the short story was so different, but it did hint at a murder suicide, if worse came to worse. What I didn't understand in the movie version, was why no one siphoned gas from the abandoned vehicles.
