i bet if you had a counter of how many times a given character has fucked, Kratos is gonna be the winner in the end sure duke nukem repopulated a planet, but kratos has been fucking for centuries, taking small breaks to either rip people apart or attempt to be a dad.

If I remember right they hacked it to play right, the game used more memory than what the console had available. They hacked into some of the memory reserved for menus and other things. So it literally was bigger than even what Sony though could work.

Sony were right to be worried about the optical drive in the ps1, the design is notoriously prone to failure, the rail that the laser will slide on will grind down a plastic spacer causing the laser to become misaligned and fail. it was a bit better in later versions but the more you use the playstation the more likely it won't work. One Fix included turning the playstation upside-down. bonus info: The original xbox had a really cheap timing capacitor (some call suicide capacitor) that would leak and eat the motherboard of the xbox after a certain amount of time, causing many xboxes nowadays to start failing. Similar story with the macintosh SE.

It's not just upside down. A friend back then needed his to be put on the side. But just straight on the side, but slightly more. Let's say about 100° over the left. Another one worked fine upside down, and yet another needed about 60 degrees on the right.

Andy said with crash, because the ram of the ps1 was so small, he treated the CD as a regular hard drive, or I guess like ram really, where he would load chunks of the level as you play, and swap things out when they were too far away from crash to be needed immediately. Great facts and episode! Loved the one about that drivers license bit lol

The people at Naughty Dog were actually even more badass than this. I've run into one of the lead developers of Crash Bandicoot in some programming forum, and they were apparently using a set of different algorithms to compile the source code. The reason for that is that the size of the final code after compilation is a bit unpredictable, depending on how the compilation will treat a certain source code, so they kept using different ones and retained the result which had the lower size. They were doing it solely for it to fit in a Playstation disk. According to the dev, the final version of Crash Bandicoot was using every single bit of space available on a Playstation disk. They did not leave a single free bit of space.

not surprised crash required such a high data read, because the game is fairly unique in that it is continually loading as crash runs forwards. It's not a game in which you ever pause to look around. Other games with stationary camera with continuous moving scenery are racing games. But in those the scenery is far simpler that crash.

I've always wondered why they didn't do a free camera style gameplay like in Ape Escape or Mario 64. I'm aware of the hardware limitations of the systems at the time, but only now did I learn that Crash Bandicoot was pushing the hardware to its limits.

Fun fact: The Crash Bandicoot programmers deleted some unnecessary libraries from Sony that they weren't supposed to, such as math calculations etc, so they could actually make the room to make all that data work. Probably one of the factors that baffled Sony, as assuming with those libraries intact, the game wouldn't be able to work. Little did they know....

You should do one about naughty dog and jak and daxter for ps2. He (Andy Gavin) said he did crazy things like utilize the ps1 chip built into the ps2 (which was supposed to only be for backwards compatibility) for an extra processor because it was there and wasn't doing anything lol

well the thing about crash pushing the playstation so hard compared to, for instance, FFVII or Resident Evil is that all those backgrounds in FFVII and Resi Evil that still look alright are pre-rendered bitmaps,- the 90s equivalent of sticking a polygonal model on a jpeg and calling it a day- while all that polygonal greenery in crash is being rendered by the playstation
