A Cessna 172 dropped to the concrete from 82 feet (25 meters) at the Landing and Impact Research Facility at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, to test the performance of four emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) installed on board. Researchers are working to improve ELT aircraft installations since studies show they don't always work correctly.

The firewall and nose gear is toast, but I can't believe the mains flexed that much and went back to their original position. Cessna builds incredible airplanes!

I live and work nearby , that structure test is part of our skyline , it was used to test Apollo spacecraft . that Cessna was based at my home airport KPHF and was used as a fish spotter with 10's of thousands of hours flying over the Chesapeake Bay looking for fish

It is amazing how tough the Cessna 172 main gear is!. It rebounded from almost flat to like new, WOW.

wow, I never knew they could make the landing gear so strong that it could absorb such an impact without taring apart, the dummies barely move on impact! that's amazing!

A strange test: ELT's in airplanes are normally designed and installed to activate on strong decelerations along the airplane longitudinal axis. Typical events would be: - Flight into terrain - Dive or spin into the ground - Landing in e.g. forest or water Hard landings normally involve strong vertical decelerations, and the ELT is normally not designed/installed to be activated by vertical decelerations. Actually, the ELT is not very important in hard landing situations, because hard landings normally happen at airfields, where there are usually persons who observe the incident and can take appropriate action. So, activation of the ELT is not expected, and probably not needed, in a hard landing incident. The recording from the cockpit clearly shows the value of a proper safety harness with shoulder strap(s), as opposed to the simple belly belt found in all passenger seats in airliners ...

AntiPonzi But think about the devices purpose... maybe this is testing slightly outside of the device's original intent, but it's designed to help locate injured victims in a plane crash. A nose down into the ground isn't going to have any chance of survival- different to a hard crash landing such as what was simulated here could happen from a loss of engine power (maybe hydraulics as well causing more clumsy approach, and reducing the pilots ability to flare up to reduce ground impact). I think this is the kind of crash that needs to be focused on, because in the event of a nosedive, you have to look at why the plane entered the dive more than how it handled the impact- you'd never expect anything less than a pile of parts afterwards. But when shit goes wrong, and the landing is forced without an airstrip, you might end up trapped in the plane after a non life-threatening injury. And I'm sure deactivating the device at an airport after a particularly clumsy approach wouldn't be too hard (nor would the emergency response be any different- they'd still send a firetruck and ambulance to the end of a runway if your plane's gear buckled on landing) Additionally- if you look how the net caught the plane, I believe that could've been part of the experiment- possibly simulating coming to a rest in vegetation where there would be some give. That would give a longitudinal deceleration similar to landing in high crops, underbrush, water, etc. I'm no expert here- but I think they're looking at the right side of the spectrum- there's never difficulty turning down the sensitivity in the future if they make it too noisy, but you'd hate for the device to not activate when you need it.

AntiPonzi What i don't understand is the 50 seconds delay reported as a problem. The new 406 ELT are designed to send a signal only after 50 and 62 seconds after the G switch is tripped. So why even mention it in their report as a problem ? This is the way it is intended. For the 406 side. The 121.5 is supposed to go right away, but NASA don't talk about it. So was it simply wrongly reported by reporters ?

All I can say is thank God for Hooker Seat Belt Harnesses. The Passenger not wearing any upper body restraint has his head slam into the instrument panel.

As much as it hurts viscerally to watch that bird being abused, ask any Civil Air Patrol Aviation crew or Field Force troop how they feel about false activations, and it's liable to be unprintable. The more tests they do like these, the better. Semper Vig.
