The last kid was a Protestant Holy Roller they would pray and flop around on the floor. For some reason they showed up a lot in 90s music videos. The official vid for mmm mmm mmm was set like a play house and each kids story acted out. The floppy cult people were in the Tori Amos video for God ….and a nine inch nails video.

Nice reaction. You're so right about those harmonies, and that _gorgeous_ fade-out. It adds another deep layer of emotion to all the imagery that came before. I still remember _exactly_ where I was when I first heard this song, 30+ years ago. Cheers.

The part about church is clearer if you watch the official video. It's a reference to the strange jerking behaviour at charismatic churches where people go into trances, speak in tongues, and go into these weird seizures. That sort of thing is more common south of the border, where you more commonly get the whole fire and brimstone approach to preaching by self-ordained preachers on power trips, etc. And Canadians get exposed to a lot of what happens in the US. But even in Canada, you get some weird, cultish churches. Just outside the town I grew up in was a hall of the Church of God (notorious years ago for advocating horrible corporal punishment for young children), and right next to it the Jehovah's Witnesses (one guy whose parents were members wrote a book about how they covered up his father's sexual and physical abuse of him). More recently, both groups caused a lot of conflict in town by refusing to wear masks during COVID, and even assaulting an old man for wearing one.

It is a powerful song to me, too. Most kids have something that they want to keep hidden, something that they feel makes them different or something that they feel others will ostracize them for. And they often feel like they can't explain if they were asked how or why they're different. Many kids feel they're the only one struggling. This song told them they weren't the only one.😢

Hey Aussie Tash, Canadian here and personally I don't generally notice your eye but if I do, it's just a part of you and you wear it well, girl! To use an Aussie phrase (I think), "no worries, mate"!

The difference, as I see it, and why the first to kids saw their situation not as bad as the third kid is because life and circumstances had given them their situation. But the third kid was subjected to it by his family. Not by accident or by birth, but by a choice of the parents.

Another really good song by the Crash Test Dummies is Superman's Song. For Canadian TV shows, there are Due South, Little Mosque on the Prairie, Corner Gas and probably one of the most popular Schitt's Creek. Also Nature of Things with David Suzuki for the science folk.

Yes "The Tragically Hip" are an amazing band, I'd recommend watching/listening to a few videos of theirs first, but then the news segment on their last show, which aired all across Canada, in almost every bar, small pub, and people's homes.

I love that you chose to start with Canadian music. We rock! I live in Nova Scotia. Have you listened to any Joni Mitchell yet? She got her start on Canadian TV as a teenager in the 1960s, and rocketed to fame with her unique voice and great song-writing. It's hard to pick a first song, her catalogue is so huge and varied. She started in Folk, and got jazzier as time went by. Joni is a whole study in herself. Big Yellow Taxi is one of her most famous songs, along with The Circle Game, Both Sides Now, and California.

Hi, Aussie Tash: The lyrics are prolly deeper than we realize. I'm wondering if the girl's 'birth marks' were actually bruises. Some 'Christian' churches have congregations that do the weirdest things. I won't analize this one but, Tash, you NEED to listen to Superman's Song. Keep playing the good Canadian music. I'll just throw this in here; check out The Cruel War by the Winnipeg group, Sugar and Spice. You'll be glad you did.

No, they're not just dancing. They are evangelical charismatics, somewhat in the same vein as those who stick their hands into a bag of venomous snakes and hope their faith in the lord makes them immune to snake bites. If you don't go into a somewhat epileptic convulsion your faith is weak. All the parishioners at least pantomime being possessed by the spirit of the lord and if they don't connipt they are ostrisized and put down. Therefore, even those who feel no sense of God entering into them, they must emulate this holy possession or be put down and ridiculed. I've met several who grew up in this sort of religious tyranny and each felt a sense of overwhelming relief to have escaped it. They all said they never felt that epiphany but always had to fake it to be accepted.

A good TV documentary series you could react to would be Hockey: A People's History, it would help you understand the growth of the game and how Canada's culture grew and developed. And a historical documentary you might be interested in would be The Great War by the CBC, it is a documentary of Canada's involvement in WW1 and includes some dramatizations of events with Justin Trudeau portraying the role of Major Talbot Papineau, MC.

My feelings is that it is about abuse. The first kid is in a car accident... it's unfortunate and it impacted him, but it was an accident. The second kid... I believe the "birthmarks" were actually injuries... and that she had been abused by a parent. The third kid has parents who are strict religious types... the kind who shake and fall to the floor in the church kind... and they are doing psychological abuse to their child by forcing that child away form classmates and working to indoctrinate them into their faith. This was my take on the song anyway.

The boy's parents were "Shakers" who would twitch around when they were in the presence of the Lord. Check it out. A more physical reaction to religious belief and one which makes the belief all the more absurd. Religion will damage your development more than broken bones or physical imperfections - it's a simple message delivered powerfully by a veery tight poetic structure.

Not dancing per se it was the fundamentalist or Shaker/Quaker evangelical , nothing wrong with dancing in church these guy's literally look like they having a seizure on the floor when the Holy Spirit " takes over " and can include but not limited to speaking in tounges....so to wit if any kid not associated with said church would find it weird and frightening. They are a strict group and most of the kids are not allowed to associate with children or ppl not of their religion....really isolate's them from the rest of society. There's a sect stateside that dances with live and very pissed off Rattlesnakes, if your bit...you've sinned somehow and no they can't go for help. God struck you down...make of that what you will. It's a Gong show for myself...just batshit crazy.
