I had the opportunity to visit Crater Lake over 12 years ago and it was a sight to behold. The water was Deep blue and surreal looking. Just majestically beautiful. We traveled to the lake's summit by car. At that time I did not know one could get to the water in the lake as depicted in this video.

My daughter was there 5 days ago and said it was stunning and so blue. She jumped into the freezing water and said it was so shocking to her body she started hyper ventilating. Said it was so clear underwater. Water temperature is some where between 40-60 degrees (mid October). So so deep.🗻

its amazing i just got back from crater lake and i swam in it and i was blown away at how blue and peer it is, i stayed in the lodge and i had goggles and if you go bring some warning the water is pretty cold at first but it warms up aster a little bit and also they don't let you use wet suits at the moment so yea check it out it is one of the coolest things you can do in Oregon.

I'm glad it said "perhaps one of the most intensely blue lakes on Earth" because this is surely the most amazing thing about the lake. Pictures do not capture it. You must be there in person to fully perceive the depth of that blue and appreciate the magnificence of the place. If you go though, please know WTF a snow cornice is and stay off of them. We lost another tourist just last week. :( It's no longer considered the 7th deepest. It is now 9th. Although (and I think even more impressive) it is 3rd in the world for greatest AVERAGE depth, bested only by Baikal and Tanganyika. Those two are created by rift valleys, not massive explosion/collapse. So really, Crater Lake is in a class of its own.

Preserving the parks is and will always be a challenge. Some people just don't care about keeping our nations natural wonders in pristine condition. Shane is right - trash can be found at almost any national park. All we can do is raise awareness and enforce littering laws. Thanks for watching, gang!

58NationalParks It's almost kind of sad to see people swimming in the lake. To me, it's like they're tarnishing the pristine of it. I like to think of Crater Lake itself as being untouched by humans. As for the trails and rim area, it's too bad that not all people respect the beauty of nature and leave it the way they found it with little or no footprint. I was just there Sunday 3-16-14 and it was breathtakingly beautiful. Looking forward to going back soon and taking some night photos.

S K water that deep and cold, bodies don't float. The cold water slows decomposition, and the incredible depth prevents the gases that do form from creating enough buoyancy to lift a body.

There are fish in the lake, and fishing is encouraged. No bag limit. Here: Are there any fish in the lake? Where can I go fishing? Fish are not native to the lake. They were introduced in the lake from 1888-1941. Six species were originally stocked, but only two have survived to today: Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon. Because they are not native to the lake, fishing is not only allowed, it's encouraged. No license is required and there is no limit on how many you may catch - the only rule is that you must use artificial bait. We don't want to accidentally introduce any other species into the lake. Fishing is allowed along the shoreline and on Wizard Island (with the purchase of a boat tour and Wizard Island ticket.)
