This small crawdad streamer works so well, I was catching fish I want even targeting with it. I went out fishing for carp, and got a carp and even some smallmouth bass. In fact, the carp I caught on this fly was 30" long, and the largest bass I caught that day was a good 3.5lbs.
Most crayfish patterns are larger sized streamers, that are heavy and hard to cast. This fly is refreshingly light, and small. Easy to cast, and also easy for fish to swallow. When targeting carp or trout, sometimes too large is a bad thing.

I really enjoy seeing your fly tying videos. It gives me different ideas to what colors and patterns to use once I start tying my own flies. Keep it up and congrats on being a dad.

When I was a kid, I grew up fishing the Cowichan River on Vancouver Island. The big Browns loved Crayfish of which there were many. I know this would have been an excellent pattern!

If your fishing shallower water, say 1 to 5 feet or so, would you recommend using bead chain eyes?

Cool fly. I've thought about using a crawfish pattern for still water trout in a shallow, weedy lake. I see lots of crawfish this size and the trout have got to be feeding on them. Thanks for excellent video. My fly tying area is coming along....slowly!

Niiiice! Not sure where to carp fish around here but would i'd image bass would chomp on it too! Like you said, good for smallies. Maybe even panfish if it was scaled down a bit. Good stuff.

What do you think about squirrel tail in place of the fox? Real similar in structure.

@joeduca8582

McFly Angler Thanks anyway but it's brown stone. It took me awhile but I was able to stop it at 2:30 minutes to see the package. I'm aware of sts but never seen it. I really like that "color", it's a nice multi color blend that to me matches the "crabs" (that's what we call them here) I've seen locally. Anyway that pattern is the best I've seen for an easy tie but still gives the impression of that food source. And yes, trout love them as much as smallies. Thanks 👍 for this tutorial, it be interesting to see how your tie does compared to the original. I'd suggest red squirrel tail or gray squirrel dyed to whatever color the wing is on the original fly if you want a closer color match, but really may not matter to the fish. Thanks again!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 6 жыл бұрын
Yep "brown stone" just saw it this morning. I was working all day yesterday from 4:15am-10:30pm so I couldn't run home and check the color name. But yes, Brown Stone. I was thinking about squirrel also, however its a little less stiff than the original. Not a bad thing, but was just trying to keep it as close to the original as possible type of thing you know?
@joeduca8582
@joeduca8582 6 жыл бұрын
McFly Angler Thanks Shawn. Even the legs you used have "crawfish" colors that you see on bass jig skirts. I can see the "stiffer" factor of the fox wing, more like the crayfish carapiece. Still, I going to get some of that color dubbing, to my eye it's perfect. Thanks again! 👍😎 Hope you can cut some 💤's 😴
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah the stiffer factor is what I was going for, but not as stiff as ducktail type of thing. But yes, I think squirrel could work well. Especially for a smaller version. Yes it was a bass jig skirt. I found a variety 20pk of them on amazon for $7 a while back so I bought them just in case. Glad I did, because they are about the only two tone legs I have. Besides stripped ones. But not like 2 colors. Just black striped I have.

Thanks for the video! How murky was the water you were fishing? Any color patterns that work particularly well for really stained water?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was slightly off color. Not like super muddy though. And around here, we really don't have many super stained waters. Its too cold, mountain fed streams and lakes. Just rarely off color too much. But, generally look at bass fishing. Many times they will fish darker colors (rather than flashy) to get the fish to see it. But bass don't hunt with sight, more their "fishy sense". HAHA. So maybe that's not the best way of determining what to use in stained water for other fish. Not sure 100% man. Sorry!
@BrazilianHashMan
@BrazilianHashMan 5 жыл бұрын
@@McFlyAngler Sounds good! I fish a super muddy river for them, like chocolate milk color, so thinking I'll do a Chartruse or Yellow version of this fly so they can see it! Thanks for the advice!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 5 жыл бұрын
Glad to help. Both bright colors like chartreuse and also dark colors (black, blue, purple etc) will be seen better in muddy water. However, that doesn't mean in super muddy water, the fish can really see unless they are an inch away. LOL

@@McFlyAngler Thanks! Yeah thays why I like the profile and rubber legs on this fly, seems like it would cause more of a disturbance for them to detect than some of the smaller fly patterns. Love your videos!

What are your thoughts on epoxy and smell? Great tutorial.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve never had issues with fish not hitting UV resin flies. I rarely use epoxy anymore so, couldn’t say much on that. But I have friends that still use 5 minute for flies like the copper John and they catch, so I think it probably doesn’t matter
@FishNC1973
@FishNC1973 4 жыл бұрын
@@McFlyAngler I agree with most fish, but as I am focused on carp at the moment, I hear a lot about not using glues and epoxies for carp flies due to intense smell that can be released. Just curious. Thanks for your thoughts. BG
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I do not know. like I said I don't use epoxy. I rarely use super glue. I use Solarez UV resin for most of my carp type flies. Maybe that has less of a smell? Or maybe thats why I don't catch as many? HAHA. Im not sure man. Ill try not using anything next time I tie a carp fly and test it.

I have been tying and fishing a very similar fly for about 5 years. And it has been very productive for the fish in my creeks. I tie it with and without legs and with bead chain and lead and no eyes mostly on a 10 hook. First chance i get i am gonna try it in the inshore salt. I am betting it will work well there also. Great pattern imo.
