I just moved to South Texas and small crayfish patterns tend to work very well for smallmouth bass, Guadalupe bass, panfish and the Rio Ciclids. They also work for other fish like catfish and trout as well. So I decided to come up with my own small crawdad pattern. Now, I am sure someone has tied something similar to this in the past, maybe even exact. If you know of a fly that is similar or exact that has already been tied, please let me know. Pretty much everything under the sun has been tied before, and someone always seems to lay claim to a pattern. In fact I will regularly have multiple people lay claim to the same fly every time I make a video. But, either way, I thought this combination of materials and way to put them onto a hook was something that would work for this area. So I made it. LOL
Ok so, with that aside. This fly will be able to be fished like a nymph, but also like a crayfish streamer as well. I mean, you could float it under an indicator, or put it on as the sole fly, and site cast to fish. Bounce it off the bottom, or swim it right by them. I do think this fly is very versatile in the way you can fish it. You tell me what your experience with it is.
Also like always, I am listing all the materials here, with links to where you can buy them. If you want to check out the Risen hooks and their other materials, then go to www.risenfly.com. Whatever you purchase there, you can get a discount by typing in "McFly" at checkout. Enjoy!

yeah, relatively warm for a time then rain, freezing rain, sleet, then snow, then in the 20s at night. Then it gets sunny, snow melts and the process starts again. I guess it's winter, lol. Actually we've been lucky, only one storm of about 8 inches that I had to snow blow. Did I read in the comments once that you've spent time in the Adirondacks? You still hunt?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure where that is Joe, but I don’t actively hunt no. I mean, it’s not something I do regularly because I don’t always get the chance, but I do enjoy hunting yes. Just recently moved to Texas, so gotta figure out the hunting situations here, also, it’s been super warm, I kinda miss actual winter! Haha!

I really like the weight you added to this pattern. I bet you could fish this up and down the gravel bottom at Six Lakes where you were hammering the trout in those high winds. I never tried a craw pattern there but in the Spring there are lots of little 🦞 crawfish in the rocks along the dam. Should work great! Thanks for the cool video. I really enjoy watching you tie flies.

@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! So really? You don’t think it looks like a crayfish? I thought it was pretty close. I mean, it’s definitely not a lifelike replica, but many flies are more suggestive than exact. Anyway, hope all is good with you man. Glad you liked it! :).

Man that looks incredible! Silly question: Is that tungsten bead heavy enough to fish like a normal jig with spinning gear, or would this be more of a fly rod only fly?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Well probably not, but maybe... I’d say go with a larger hook, and larger bead, then put extra wraps of lead also behind the bead, then it could work yeah.

@@McFlyAngler it will be may before I do, they already moved out of my somewhat secret spot for the year. I fish a creek that's right down the road from my house they migrate down stream the first week of October to the lake it feeds into and dont return until the second week of may, you can almost set your watch by it. @@McFlyAngler I will. Living in New England, NOW is the time to find oneself just below a dam throwing woolly buggers, or this little creation of yours. Carp do go for flies. They're also these cunning, sneaky little (big) pains in asses whose first habit is simply not taking what you've got to offer...
