Perhaps Black didn't like the look of Qe2 pinning the bishop on e7? If I'm calculating correctly, after ...Nxd5 Qe2 Nf6 Bxf6 gxf6, or ...Nxd5 Qe2 Nc7/Nb4 Bxe7 Qxe7 Qxe7 Kxe7, White is down a pawn but has an easier plan ahead.
