I have been teasing this series for a very long time...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a twenty episode retrospective on every Sega developed arcade racing game in 3D! Because whether its retro gaming or modern pc gaming...Sega is the KING of the arcade racing genre! So buckle up and get ready for a retrogaming ride!
THE RULES FOR INCLUSION: 1) It must have had an arcade release (So no Sega GT) 2) It must be in 3D (Bye Bye Outrunners, etc etc) and 3) you MUST be racing against an opponent and not just a timer (sorry Crazy Taxi, Wild Riders)
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,
tobemorecrazy, Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holder Schmidt, Tim Lehner, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj, Dorfus the Maple Syrup Man, John Booty and Craig M!
Up next: Crazy Taxi 3 on the original Xbox! Because everyone loves Crazy Taxi and Crazy Taxi 2 on the Sega Dreamcast and NAOMI arcade board...so why not talk about the third entry in the franchise on the original Xbox...and show levels from all three games! This might not be an Xbox hidden Gem but its still an absolute ton of fun and Sega history as far as games are concerned!
But this is a bonus episode as this is more of a time attack game / score attack game and really doesn't involve arcade racing at all!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

I first played the original Crazy Taxi on Dreamcast in the mid 2000s and fell in love, then I stumbled onto High Roller at a used game store a few years later and it became hands down one of my favorite games. It's the Xbox game I most wanna see added to back compat.

Unfortunately, thanks to the greed of the music record industry, most if not all games with licensed soundtracks could not be ported. Sadly CT3 is one of them.

Nice video. I love crazy taxi 3, it's the best way to play crazy taxi nowadays imo (short of playing on an actual arcade machine of course.) For those interested, it also got a PC port which is basically abandonware now. Sadly it doesn't come with the same OST as the Xbox version but there are ways to change that. There are also mods to play it in 16:9 and at 60 fps. It's not hard to setup at all and it runs on my shitty laptop so it's definitely worth trying if you're curious.

The mid 2000's was a weird time to be born because i remember growing up with crazy taxi, 18 wheeler, jambo safari, daytona usa and other games aswell as the 2010's arcade games. I think my best memory with the series would be when i was staying at a hotel and they had a naomi upright crazy taxi which i spent a lot of time playing when an older janitor came up to me and told me how he was impressed a little kid like me was playing that game and doing well. Man gave me free credits and taught me how to drift. Great time

Funny enough Sega originally had much grander plans for what Crazy Taxi 3 was going to have a big online multiplayer component and each stage was going to have a day and night cycle, which would change where passenger locations and goals were. Sad we never got that but Crazy Taxi 3 is still a decent package, one thing I like is the West Coast map actually has some new areas, mainly there's a themepark area added between the stadium and the highway, but it's also a very odd package for not including the 2nd map from the home port of Crazy Taxi 1, and I don't know why they used Small Apple from Crazy Taxi 2 instead of Around Apple, it was the far better map of the two.

So Crazy Taxi... there is a little trick that works on all version of this where if you switch the gear from reverse to drive and then hit the accelerator immediately, you get a speed boost. Now while this is meant to be used when you first take off, there is no limit on how often you can use this and you can spam it repeatedly while driving. This means you can max out your speed endlessly if you get the rhythm down. So this does two things. One means you can rack up intense scores as you are basically playing the game far faster than it is designed. My high score on the original was about the 500,000 (it only takes 10,000 to get the "CRAZY" rating). Secondly, this hits the disc drive far harder than normal as it is streaming a lot more data (Textures/Geometry/Audio Samples/Music). This was done because of the different RAM setup between Dreamcast and Naomi. This causes the disc laser to be constantly moving. Normally this wouldn't be an issue in normal play. So when Crazy Taxi 2 came out with more dense environments and multiple passengers (streaming a lot more audio samples), you could play it so fast that you end up pausing the game simply to wait for the whole system to catch up - and in my case, burnt out the Dreamcast laser motor... yeah! Not so great! But that is what happened when you push the motors to hard for too long. Then Crazy Taxi 3 came along, the whole game is cached on the hard drive. So it runs off a drive with far faster seek and access times and is designed to handle work loads like this, to say I abused it is an understatement. You can play as fast as you want and the Xbox would just take it. Absolutely brilliant game - highly recommended.

I have played first two games on DC, never played third one. Las Vegas seems interesting place with lot of unique landmarks. For me best game was first Crazy Taxi even with no jumping mechanic. Sega nailed map, it got interesting places and it's fun to play, both maps. As for Crazy Taxi 2 it is not as good as first one, but still fun. I like drivers design and first map.

I used to love playing Crazy Taxi high roller at the arcade. On one game, especially in Glitter City, I would last an hour on the same game before either the game removed the customers to make me lose on purpose or I used up all the passengers for that game. People would even stop at times and look at me play which was cool. I would even make my own shortcuts jumping off the dam and cliffs despite what the directional arrow said which way to go and would reach the destination on time nonetheless. Man, I miss that game. If only it would release on Steam and not just the first version of the game.

i really wish crazy taxi 3 got the backwards compatible treatment on current gen consoles. sega's habit of ONLY rereleasing the first game in their arcade driving series' like this is truly annoying. also, random info, sega of america was headquartered in san francisco (i live here and up until just a few years ago, the "SEGA" sign was still on the building even) which is probably the main reason they used SF so much in their games. granted it is a really versatile city to make game maps from.

I never got this back in it's day it's the first game I'm getting when I find a working referbished Xbox. The PC abandonware version floating around has something wrong with it. Love these games though 1 and 2 are my most played Dreamcast games. Taxi Chaos is a spiritual indie sequel that isn't as good because of its repetitive dialogue "Ya knoe one day closer to retirement and living out my days in an old folks home" over and over. Simpsons Road Rage was the best of the clones though

i just could never get into this game, i dont know why. i loved nearly everything on the dreamcast but this game just didnt do it for me. i think for me it felt "generic". like you kind of just start, youre a cab driver, you do a cab drivers job (although spectacularly i'll admit) but there's not much else to it. i think if i had played it in an arcade it would have made more sense, but highscore just wasn't something i cared about, mainly because my older brothers and cousins had already dominated every game on every memory card haha. little kid me just needed something more i guess. maybe it's time to give it another chance.
