I would have foregone the cost of tooling and production of that wheel and upgraded that extruder to the alloy version with twin gears, of course, this will add a little to the top-end $ but considering it will need to be added eventually by the user I believe this adds value to the unit

Agree with you that the V1 is a better printer for people willing to tinker. For the $100 saved you can upgrade it to a 32bit board with 2209's, and still have enough money left over for a (clone) BMG extruder and 3D touch. V2 is probably a better option for (trying to put this nicely) non-technically minded entry level users who are interested in 3D printing because it's the cool thing at the moment. Or come to think of it, in simpler terms: Nerds = buy a V1 Geeks = buy a V2

Hey Chris! I upgraded my Ender V1 board to a Creality 4.2.7 and flashed it with Marlin Bugfix 2.1.X. Everything seems to be working great with only the slight hiccup of the CF CARD reader not re reading the card if you ever pull the card out and reinserting it, or inserting another card. The only way to remedy this is to power cycle the printer. I use a mini CFto CF card reader and ejecting the mini CF portion on the ribbon cable seems to work also; The board seems to need that "click" on insert. Have you come across this? How did you fix it? Thanks!
@ChrisRiley

That's strange, there is no reset option for the reader I guess. I would think that would be a firmware option, but I'm not sure which one controls that.

Do the ender 3, 3 v2, and 3 s1 all have the same frame setup? I've only been able to look at pictures, I'm thinking of buying a broken 3 v1 off if eBay for the frame and bed then get the rest from other places to save a bit of money and also to upgrade it for the future. Are the frames the same?

I'm looking to buy the v1, but I'm concerned about some reviews I'm seeing which say the print bed is a bit warped and that it seems to break if used regularly and requires some modifications. Is this something to worry about? What modifications might be worth it? Is an upgrade to the v2 really worth it on a tight budget? Is there another budget model you recommend? I'm new to 3D printing (I've done some research and designed a few models but that's it) so I don't know a lot. Thanks in advance for the reply!!
@ChrisRiley
@ChrisRiley 11 ай бұрын
Hey, the V1's do tend to have a warped bed. It's very hit and miss. Not sure the V2 is worth the extra money, but if you are having problems with the bed, you could add a piece of glass to help make it flat.

Nice comparison. Got my V1 September 15th (couldn't really see a great difference for the price), has the same 32 bit board as the V2 BUT with A4988 drivers, hence still noisy. Regarding thermal runaway protection, I enabled the feature when upgrading marlin to it's version 2.0.x (mandatory in my opinion if buying this version). When compiling the binary I found out I really had lots of memory to cope with, so that helped a lot to enable lots of non stock features. The 32 bit board comes with a bootloader flashed, so upgrading the firmware gets several steps easier. If you don't have the money, or if you are willing to tinker with the machine, I agree that V1 is still a great option, and the enhancement in the board gives a wider range to play with.
@ChrisRiley

Chris Riley I use Aquanet hairspray for adhesion. I love printing with PETG on these. The part cements itself to the build plate while it’s hot, pops off almost on its own when it cools. No scraper needed, no damaged prints. Smooth finish on the bottom of your prints. Amazing material!

I ended up getting a v2 as my first printer. I have used the v1 a few time before but overall I think I like the v2 better. My only complaint right now is no auto leveling, plastic extruder, and and no filament runout sensor. But I've seen someone turn the z axis switch into a filament runout sensor when they got an auto leveler which solved 2 of the issues

Not sure I understood well, I thought the 40X40 bottom pillar, the 32bit board and the updated power supply would cost me the price difference between V1 and V2. I also thought that the board and power supply was top in the list of replaced part for tinkerers.

You might be able to get it a bit cheaper for the v1. Power supply really isn't that big of an upgrade, but the MW will last a lot longer.

My Ender 3 arrived a week ago, I chose standard version because of price difference. Standard was on sale with 20% lower price than it normal was. Only thing that I would like is better stepper motor controllers of V2. Other stuff I printed out, and turns out better - feeding wheel for example, no woble on printed part. Also it's very fun to upgrade and watch your printer grow. =)

I myself decided to buy v1 as a beginner. Its 100 € cheaper for me. It works great and helps you decide if you want to stick to 3d printing or not. In case you won't like it, you haven't spent that much. If you love it, you can buy second, more expensive machine. Having 2 printers definitely helps if you will want to print a lot. Cause the print time is a lot more than I though. Tiny small pig takes 6 hours.
