How to find the key from the chord progression. How do u know it's in key of F?

@@OneStepToday In this case Bill said he was playing in F major, but if he hadn’t I’d look at his left hand as he plays and listen for the chord that sounds like home. In this case the note C is the lowest then F and A. So that’s an F major chord with C in the bass typically written as F/C. Normally you’d expect F in the bass since the lowest note typically denotes the chord but maybe he’s imagining someone else in the band is covering the low F note. If you couldn’t see his hands you’d need to listen to Bill playing and then find the notes on the piano to figure it out. Too much info?

@@OneStepToday Music is filled with ambiguous and dual meaning terms so sometimes is comes down to perspective. A KEY signature is the default number of sharps or flats on the staff. The key signature of C has none. The musical KEY of a song describes both the scale being used and its starting note so C Major has no sharps or flats and starts on the note C. So far so good? But what about the musical key of C Minor? It also starts on C but requires 3 flats, Eb, Ab & Bb i.e. the key signature of Eb. I’d typically notate the song with a key signature of Eb but when looking at the chords or listening to the song I’d see/hear the chord Cm as a satisfying home in the progression. But maybe my song is in C major mostly but the bridge section modulates to C minor. I could chose to add the accidentals as needed or I could choose to change the key signature for the section and then change it back. Both are valid. You have to listen to the chords of the song to know the musical key. Here Bill’s playing chords using the notes Bb and Db but that’s not a valid key signature. The Bb is used in a root position Bb major chord and that hints at the key signature F. The Db is used in an augmented chord (4 semi-tones and 4 semi-tones between notes) so the Db is an accidental. Bill doesn’t use the notes Ab or Eb so the key signature is F. When we listen to the chords the tonal centre of the song is the F major chord although Bill plays an inversion with C in the bass. Also, when the chord Bb major is played it sounds like it belongs so the musical key is not C. Does that make sense?

YES! I was _this close_ to using it as an example, but often if I play classical stuff the copyright bots mistake it for someone else's recording, so I decided not to. (I say "yes" on the basis that the repeated broken chord pattern is very typical of minimalist keyboard music; a real purist might say that Bach has an awful lot going on in the harmony, which is true, but to me it sounds so typically minimalist that it's a shame not to at least ponder it in those terms).
