Zoonoses are infectious diseases that jump between animals and humans, such as COVID-19, avian flu and swine flu. Analyzing the risk of disease transmission between species is essential in preventing future pandemics and mitigating human infections.
Emily DeRuyter is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions. She studies within the department of environmental and global health, working with EPI member John Lednicky on virology projects. Her research focuses on viral discovery and surveillance with the goal of creating a framework to evaluate the risk of novel wildlife viruses that cause disease in humans.
