Creating a Detailed Inlay Entirely With Super Glue

2 жыл бұрынWherein I create an inlay of a 500-year-old sketch using nothing but cyanoacrylate glue.
The anatomical illustration, created by Leonardo da Vinci, is generally referred to as "A Skull Sectioned," and was penned in 1489. I created a detailed vector of the image with the help of Adobe Illustrator, which I then carved into Baltic birch plywood and filled by hand with custom-mixed, colored super glue.

Always good to be learning! Well done. Got schooled, funny. Short story. Seen a couple of older guys at the lake. They were unloading stuff to fish. I said to them, I’ve never seen anyone fishing here before. Responded one. We’ll give it the old college try. Happy I continued my walk. 10 minutes later, they were packing up, seemed a bit upset. I said, well that didn’t take long! I guess we know who went to community college! Laughing followed.

This may be one of my favorites from you besides the shop storage projects. I love the colors created by mixing the white with the brown. I love the depth, textures, etc. and I could see this exact recipe of glue shades with maybe an addition of bronze powder and green shades used in a piece carved to show human evolution or something along those lines just because the colors are so neutral yet natural looking. Anyways now I’d love, love to see you mix starbond with vibrant colors, neons, pastels, neutral colors and even glow in the dark but my favorite I’ve seen is when brass and copper powders are mixed into the glue and then used to fill holes, etc. Thank you, this was a joy and I’m getting some great ideas. 🤟🏽

My wife picked this video today to watch. Afterwards she didn't tell me to buy it, she told me you need an xcarve, wow i agree but i'd have to build a new mancave mine if filled with Gonks and animatronics some 6ft tall. All in all i think you might have picked up a new fan, since she made me watch three more of your videos that i had already watched. Were both makers in Adam Savage definition, i build animatronics and puppets and she makes custom diaries and paper stuff.

great idea, as soon as you started I thought 'oh, this must have taken days to do' I'm impressed with the high accuracy between multiple layers. those locating pins work great for re-aligning your sheet. I'm going to have to set up something like that on my CNC rebuild. In any case, final result looks awesome, nice work.

Came out fantastic, especially with how much the air bubbles add a perfect crunchy texture. Close up, thought they'd ruin the work, but boy was I wrong. Not gonna lie, though - a little disappointed it wasn't what I was thinking. The translucency in the thumbnail made it look like you achieved contrast purely by thicker and thinner applications of plain superglue let soak into the wood. Hell of a challenge at this scale, but, with something smaller, it'd be cool to see some experimentation!

Wow this could not be more timely! I was moving an anvil on a stand 2 weeks ago and it tipped over horn first! My house is built like a brick shithouse, but it left a hell of a dent in the original herringbone floors. I melted a few crayons into the hole and disguised it pretty well, but it's in the dead center of a room with an all glass wall facing south. It's just been irrking me every morning. I finally decided to make a sort of fancy compass out of quasi exotic wood and router it into the floor. These are original surfaces from 1951 and I don't have a single extra board. I've got a few closets to scavenge from, but I'm hoping to move one wall in the future, I think I would need them there more. Since this damage happens to be dead center in the room, I think an inlaid compass could look like it was planned from the beginning. Outside of " weathering", any suggestions for making it look like it's always been there? One of my issues is that the floor was put down over tar paper, the house was a single story for the first 12 years. There's going to be a lot of nails in the floor, I figured I would put a carbide end mill in a router and go slowly. Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Starbond does make some good stuff. I picked up an assortment the last time you had a deal with them. I've been happy with it so far. My 7 year old is aware that daddy can fix whatever she breaks with super glue. It's my dad super power.

Great job. When I do the epoxy I do a .02 offset to cut those lines out. I love that.

Thanks! Oddly enough, I didn't even use an offset. Not sure if the glue may have swelled the edges just a bit or if the angle of the V-bit was just slightly off spec.

I don't know if the fidelity is good enough but it looks like you could do a really cool "relic," paint job on a guitar with this set up. Stevie Ray Vaughan here you come.

I think the "relic" fad can go die in a fire, but i feel this inlay method is somehow unlike people dragging a brand new fender behind their truck to give it character instead of having a life and playing it, then putting it in a glass case to admire it's faux beauty. The Ca glue would likely last centuries, and be pretty wear resistant, although acrylic or even epoxy might be a better choice. If doing it on the body, I would be sure you use a hardwood like maple or mahogany as the usual poplar/basswood might be too soft to hold sharp edges. Most necks are already maple/mahogany with maple/ebony/rosewood fretboards, so should would work reliably.

Dig, it, would look good with some abstract devine geometry motifs i bet. Or maybe a faux stained glass effect using acrylic/poly sheet as your medium. Or go full Dune: Inlays within inlays within inlays.

impressive ... your patience most of everything else. Would there be a way to circumvent some of the shrinkage of the superglue ?

Thanks! I suspect some of the shrinkage had to do with absorption, but there are probably other factors involved. In some instances, I was able to fill an area, spray it, and it didn't shrink at all. I got a nice smooth surface in some of my tests, and in a couple of the pockets of the finished piece. In my off-camera experiments, I tried different methods to get a consistently smooth finish, but I wasn't able to find the right boxes to tick to get it to happen every time. Your best bet is just not to apply as much glue at once as I was doing. Use very thin layers between sprays of accelerator.

Thanks! I think I had estimated using something like 5-7 fl. oz. in the final piece. But, I didn't keep track of how much I used when I was running tests.

One of my model maker buddy’s told me i was using too much kicker when it “boils” like that. He would actually spay the kicker in the air and then run the part through the mist.. thats how little you need.

Nice work. Any reason you didn't use epoxy? It's about 50 times cheaper and no fumes.

Thanks! A few advantages for this application: - It's difficult to mix very small amounts of epoxy and get the ratio exact. I'd have to mix more than I need and waste a lot of material. - No pot life. It took up to 3 hours to complete each color. I would've had to mix several cups of epoxy in that time to finish the job, because it would have started setting up long before I was done. More wasted material (and time). - With the accelerator, the super glue cures within minutes or seconds. I can fill a small section, spray it, then not worry about accidentally touching it and ruining it. I can also seal any pocket that's particularly porous by hardening a thin layer of glue, then continue filling it. When I'm done, I can move on to the next carve almost immediately. Epoxy can take hours or days. - Some of those pockets were very small. It took a needle to fill them. Even thinned epoxy would have been too thick. Not to mention, I'd have had to throw away dozens of those little bottles. With the super glue, I'm still using the same bottles. Plus, it's always worth it to experiment with new materials. Epoxy's been done. I wanted to see what would happen with something else. If I hadn't, I wouldn't have discovered the visual depth that the random texture adds to the piece. 👍
