You asked for it! After nailing my finger to a sign frame, I took your advice and created an old-fashioned workplace "accident scoreboard," but with an auto-incrementing readout, fashioned after the now-obsolete, but much more aesthetically pleasing, incandescent "eggcrate" displays of old.

CIRCUIT INFORMATION
I'm using an Adafruit ItsyBitsy 32u4 (5v) to run the display, with an Adafruit PCF8523 real time clock breakout board to read the time. (Both linked above.) I'm using three 74HC595N shift registers to trigger the 22 channels in the display, each switched using an FQP30N06L logic-level MOSFET. The bulbs are all 12VDC #428 miniature-base (E10) incandescents. The buzzer and the button are both listed above.

HUGE props for working out the official scoreboard font. I worked for FairPlay back in the 1990s and loved their 7 segment font that used a more pleasing “script” for the segments rather than 7 discrete bars. It takes more channels per digit, but looks so much better. FairPlay’s number “4” had the upper left corner lamp OFF and I think that was actually patented or trademarked, IIRC.

When you got to the point where you questioned why the led's were blinking, my first assumption was the breadboard. I once banged my head against a desk for 3 days on the stupidest tiny sketch for my arduino that was doing very confounding things that shouldn't be possible. Come to find out the breadboard was faulty, the sketch was fine. Now I avoid the cheapest level of breadboard and buy at least the mid grade. Another great vid!

Great video, Wesley! I make a lot of clock-based projects and a while back I switched to using ESP8266 chips in them. Having built-in WIFI means you can get time from an NTP server and negates the need for a dedicated clock chip. Of course, this means you have to have WIFI where you are putting the project, so it depends on your use-case. Just some food for thought.
@maxximumb

The problem with using WiFi / Internet for getting data is that you need to secure your device from folks on the outside of your network.
@WesleyTreat
@WesleyTreat 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I considered connecting it to my wifi, but there would eventually be connection issues at some point and I'd have to hook up my laptop and fix them. With the RTC, I should be able to set the time and forget it, and the battery should last several years. I might consider a GPS unit for something similar in the future, but in my metal shop, that might be a problem, too.
@adriancentra
@adriancentra 2 жыл бұрын
@@maxximumb genuinely curious why? You wouldn’t need to make it accessible for incoming connections, just get the time. If you’re worried about the NTP Server going rogue and giving a response that somehow exploits your code, maybe set up some firewall rules so that your device can’t access the rest of your network. But that seems very unlikely as it would have to be targeted. Or am I missing something here.

I was one of the people who asked for you to add a sign like this to your merch store. I don't know why I would have expected you to add a cheap, mass-produced sign when your specialty is beautiful works of advertising art! Sadly, I won't be buying one from you... But you have inspired me to make something similar (though maybe a little less ambitious) and I hope that's a small consolation.
