Just what I needed! After using Sketchup for awhile, I've fallen into a groove with the exploded view and dimensions as the shortcut to getting started cutting and milling. I don't add all the joinery to the model in fairly simple simple projects. The exploded view and dimensions are enough. Thx!

Thanks, once again, for your patient instruction! I'm particularly grateful for one small detail that YOU GET RIGHT: the proper singular/plural usage of axis/axes! I find it rather irksome in would-be teachers within this 3D design realm who cannot get that distinction down correctly - so - THANK YOU!

Thank you. This was helpful, but it's exactly the way I was thinking it would work. I was hoping there would be a better way. Thanks a bunch for showing us how this is done. One thing you might show is how it looks when you send it to Layout, such as best views to show in Layout so it's clear to someone else who have never seen the drawing before what is going on. That's always my challenge.

I am Extremely new to Sketchup. By watching videos I have learned how to make certain items. I am watching this one because I wanted to find out how I can explode view my projects. The question I have is the view to move things along the blue axes (Up), what buttons do I need to hold down on my computer? Or left or right? Thank you so much for posting.

Great video! I have a couple of questions. By making the items in the exploded view unique, does that break the relationship to the original component, if I later change the size of items, say I make the cabinet deeper will that carry over to the exploded view? Second, how does having items on different layers affect creating a cut list using something like OCL?
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 3 жыл бұрын
Correct to the first question - if you make it unique, it breaks the relationship. If you follow this method, I'd recommend saving a new version of the file before doing that just in case you need to make changes. Can't speak to anything having to do with OCL as I haven't used it

Fantastic, educational video. Really puts Sketchup Exploded Views into perspective... Seriously, I do like how thorough you are with the details. It makes it so much easier when translating back to Make 2017. In addition, your enthusiasm makes an otherwise dry subject entertaining. The idea of the exploded view makes me wonder if there is a standard SketchUp / woodworking way to document components with build instructions. The cut list plugin is great for getting the shape of a board. I wonder if there is a technique / plugin for documenting processing that needs to be applied to a cut board (e.g. rabbets, dados, and grooves).

I know this is an older video, just found it. I have done this type of things multiple ways. But just got to wondering... hmm.. what about dynamic component, "on-click" program parts to relocate. Make scenes at both locations.... havent tried it though yet... Yep! Answered my own dumb question... dynamic doesn't work for this. It may be a list viewed way to manually explode a part but it has to be copied but unique component from parent.

I want to have the option of selecting the qty of shelves from an “option” I create and when done so the shelves will equally space within the cabinet. So if the cabinet has a height of 36 I can select 3 or 4 shelves and they will evenly distribute. I already have the model it’s the function I’m having difficulty writing. Any help would be great. Thx.

@Thesketchupessentials 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Graham - I find that the "Brightman Method" is great for creating models that work with Layout, but you might not need to get to that level of detail for a simple woodworking model. It just kind of depends on what you're trying to achieve. Thanks for watching!

Sketchup does allow for animation of the scenes. You can specify the delay and duration between scenes. So I think that would allow the simulation of an explosion if both scenes are positioned at the same origin. What do you think Justin? P.S. like your stuff!

Do you have something hidden away that I may have missed, or point me the right direction please? Cheers! John.

Love this tutorial. I just got the Nudge extension, and it would be handy on a project like this one. Love the use of layers. You could export an explosion animation I suppose? So, place them in the same spatial location, and as you export the scenes as an animation, SKU would blend them/animate them for you. Worth a shot. The other thought (and it's way more complex) is to make these elements into dynamic components and with some duct tape and ingenuity, program the components for a one click explode on that puppy. That's beyond my dynamic component coding for sure, but I suspect it's possible. "on click" and change your location on a given axis etc. This could be the non-destructive methodology we're looking for. Can't thank you enough for the great extension reviews--it's saved me 2 to 3 hours this week alone.
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea - probably if I was really worried about creating a non destructive version, I'd use the extension "Animator" by Fredo6 (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9Flf8WiybvbeZs.html ). It has the ability to create moving animations, so you could animate the movement of each individual piece. Thanks!

Another informative video Justin - Thank you! I do have a comment about using the Tape Measure Guide to indicate the component location in the model! @Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Don - generally speaking, SketchUp doesn't support dashed lines outside of guides. That being said, you could use an extension like 2D tools (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5-aeb2atbPTlJc.html) to create some permanent dashed lines. Does that help?

This could easily be a 3-4 minutes video. Having it less verbose would be a big improvement.

I like your videos "but" : 1. Please let the mouse pointer linger over a menu item so my eye can find the pointer and I have time to read what you are going to click on. 2. Please don't use the word "object" instead of "Component" or "Group". Thank you!
