In this Autodesk Maya tutorial I explain how to apply and edit clusters on polygon geometry. We'll also attach a control curve to the cluster for use on a 3d rig. Clusters are commonly used to rig 3d character faces (eyebrows, mouths etc...) but they can be used for any other reason you can imagine!

Over time I have been using joints to rig facial expression, but coming across this video makes life easier and faster for my work flow..thanks for making this tutorial

Man I've been looking for a simple way of rigging lips like this forever! I always supected this could be used with the brow and lip but folks made it more complicated than that. Thanks. Maybe do a practical tut on using this mehod to rig the lip/brow?

Soooooo what is difference between this and reguar binding mesh to joints?

Well you just use this for different reasons, and it won't be in your list of bound joints. But your right it's very similar.

@@Yushataram there's a tool called dkanim which is used to export animation.

paint cluster in a curve? Set cluster weights in a curve?

I just select a point and use soft selection and adjust the falloff. Way quicker then having to paint weights

That's good for modeling but the cluster gives you a control that allows you to animation the deformation.
