My college has these rules for dorms: -no flesh-eating fish -non-flesh-eating fish can only be kept in a ten-gallon tank or smaller -no candles, coffee makers, hot plates, blenders, microwaves (only exception being a rented microwave from the school), Panini presses, crock-pots, toasters, toaster ovens, basically anything that made heat -exception was a kettle or a keurig but they had to have an automatic shutoff -every student was only allowed one UL-listed power strip -Dry campus, if you were caught with alcohol in your dorm you got kicked out

Glad we just live in normal apartments in my country, Jesus. That sounds awful. Edit: What I mean is, student dorms are not really a thing. They're very, very expensive and only rich people use them. Vast majority of students rent and share regular apartments.

Sharing a dorm room with another student is soooo weird to me. I studied in Germany and lived in a dorm for one year. All the dorm rooms were single bed rooms. Some were like full on apartments with multiple bedrooms, one or two shared bathrooms and one shared kitchen, but never a shared bedroom! My room was equipt with a kitchen and a bathroom for my self, I didn't share anything. I wasn't allowed to bring in any new furniture or do anything permanent with the walls.

Same! It's so weird! I've lived in Swedish "dorm" buildings where 10 people shared a kitchen and a shower, but it's still such a different experience. You're an adult and your room is your personal space, same as any tenant in an apartment building. As long as you don't disturb anyone or wreck your room, you can do whatever you want.

When I was in college in 1977, the women had one dorm and the men the other. We were across the quad from each other with the admin building at the top of the U shaped street. The rooms had built in beds, shelves and desks. Painting the rooms was right out. I had a stereo/cassette player/record player deck, my clothes and books, and bedding. There was no option for painting walls (didn't even occur to me). Minimalistic moving in and out was nice.

@@yuhhbiscuit It was sarcasm. It's similar to what I said on a previous video with her making a sim and using "they" and people had a massive emotional breakdown over it.. It's really weird that people get so emotional over these tiny things like they're looking for validation from any other source other than themselves and the people they care about.. Like yeah it's nice she uses the flags, but bringing attention to it is what makes it weird. Also, she usually uses the flags because they fit the color theme and are a very nice option for wall decorations in terms of size and looks compared to other things. Just go and look at the other comments about the flag and how people are so emotional over it.. it's not healthy at all to be that emotional over some random person hanging a flag.

College, like many parts of society, is engineered on purpose to accommodate the average person. It's not glamorous, but it is designed in such a way that the average person will be able to succeed. And in the US at least, schools are required by law to provide accommodation for people with disability as well. In my experience, college was much better than high school. I don't mean to be bearer of bad news but they are much worse in real life. They are much more cramped and tiny than this. The freshman dorms at my university are legit only long enough to fit two twin beds and two end tables. It's not worth it, especially adding around 20k+ in total cost to your student loans. it's why I went to university near me so I could live at home and it's so much better.

I went to college back in the 90s, but one of my dorm rooms had the built-in closet, desk, dresser/storage area along one wall. You could bunk the beds to save floor space. No sink in the room. You could bring a mini fridge and a microwave, but no other cooking appliance. I also stayed in a dorm that had a very industrial-looking (exposed pipes) sink in the room. We were not allowed to paint the walls, so people would hang up blankets and curtains.

My dorm is that decorated… it helps to overdecorate so you don’t miss home lmao. But to be fair I have a single and my RE doesn’t really care about the rules (the stupid ones such as no candles)
@browntr95
@browntr95 2 жыл бұрын
As an RA, we had similar rules. Fairy lights were allowed, just not against the ceiling. You weren't supposed to hang anything from the ceiling and were heavily encouraged to use command hooks if you were going to put things on the wall. Open heat sources weren't allowed, and extension cords were only allowed if they were a certain brand and power strips had to have a built in breaker switch. Lava lamps would have been a no, so would wax warmers and anything other than a Keurig, microwave, fridge or blender. Anything else had to be taken to the kitchen to use. Luckily and Unluckily, the main girls dorm building at my college turns 100 this year and the rooms I was in (3 different ones) One of them had a little alcove with a mirror that was probably supposed to have a sink at one point but just had a mirror. Every room came with one desk, one chair, one bed and the pieces to loft it and then one dresser. One wing had suites, one wing had double closets and shelves around the double window, the other two had a single closet and a single window. Luckily, we had two kitchens per floor, but hall bathrooms for everyone except the wing with the suites. My roommate and I lofted the beds and tucked our dressers underneath it.

I’m Swedish, so a Swedish dorms are a bit different. Where I lived, everyone had a single room. We had a sink and a bathroom mirror in our room, but we all had to share toilets and showers. We lived 24 people in my dorm-house. 24 people had to share on two kitchens (2 stoves/ovens, 2 sinks and 2 dishwashers), 6 toilets, 4 showers, 4 fridges (everyone got one shelf each), 2 freezers and one cupboard shelf each. Oh and we had a laundry room in the basement. Each room had a fire alarm that was connected with the others and send a signal to the fire station if it went off (it did one freezing November night). But no one checked our rooms for fire hazards, so candles and coffee machines were aloud. 😄

At my university in Kent, UK, each flat (apartment) had 6 bedrooms each with their own en suite and a communal kitchen to share between your flat mates. I think my building had 12 flats, and the same amount on the other side of the building. It was a great experience but I cannot imagine not having a kitchen or my own bathroom

I live in Sweden with my bf in a student apartment. Here it's normal to rent your own small apartment as a student (a living room/bedroom, a bathroom and a place to cook your food). Usually it comes with the most necessary furniture (bed, table, 4 chairs, desktop + chair) but in the bigger apartment, like ours, you bring your own furniture. You can decorate as you like it! The only thing you can't have in the apartments with furnitures that's not yours are animals. Otherwise, you decorate with whatever you'd like :)

At my school there was basically upperclassmen dorms, sophomore dorms, and freshmen dorms. Because of a complication I never lived in the freshmen dorms as a freshmen, I just did the same sophomore building twice for 2 years. But these were the differences: Sophomores: a kitchenette with a half size (slightly bigger than a mini I think?) Fridge and a microwave. A suite for 4 people, 2 to each room. And a bathroom in the suite for all 4 people to share. Upperclassmen: a full kitchen, many cabinets, full size fridge with a freezer, oven/stove, and microwave. 4 rooms in a suite, 2 people in each room, so 8 total. Two bathrooms in each suite, one on each side, so there is (theoretically) 4 to each bathroom. My school didn't have forced dorming in any way but they had a forced meal plan. If you lived on campus you were auto enrolled in the meal plan, even if you didn't want it, it was part of the bill.

So I made Kraft Dinner in my rice cooker! @ anyone going to dorms: When making rice, adding canned corn and things like Sazon Goya packets makes it a lot tastier! You just put them in with the rice before setting it to Cook Just make sure the cooker fits your dorm's rules, and follow the instructions/tutorials

I had a dorm apartment in college, we paid extra. 4 beds 4 baths, so had my own room and a bathroom, with a shared living and kitchen space. Shared the apartment with three other people. Our rooms were super small but it came with a decent amount of moveable furniture so I was able to make myself a massive desk with all of the dressers. It was super useful while doing class online.

I go to a STEM and Arts highschool and our dorms (we're required to live on campus and most of us only go home once a month or less) are very similar to college dorms. We are however spoiled because we have suite-style rooms :) We're allowed Keurig-style coffee pots and electric kettles and mini-fridges, but no personal microwaves. We can use command strips and such but we can't hang curtains and we have weekly room inspections so paint is a no-no. I don't know how many RMs and the like colleges have but each residential hall has 2 per floor, with the exception of first floor because there's not as many students. The dorms are really nice here and we get lots of storage space in the closet. I am going to be very let down when I live in college dorms, I think.

in Russia, we are allowed to do whatever we want with the dorm rooms because usually the rooms are very old and they look bad so the administery doesn't really mind if we do renovations ourselves. we also can have anything and i really mean ANYTHING in our rooms i.e. we have two coffee brewers, a microwave, a ton of candles, and two kettles. Usually we already are supplied with a cooking stove, and that's it. we have to buy fridges and washers ourselves, but they're often cheap enough for students. i like dorms.

However, in my uni you could live in a dorm only if you are from a different city. So I have to take an hour long metro ride to get to university and I get to talk with other students only during breaks, rip

I'm in the UK and our accommodation was a lot smaller than this room (but all rooms were singles), but we did have a kitchen to share per floor, and a bathroom per floor (this may be different for campus universities). We definitely couldn't paint the walls etc, but there were no rules about what you could/couldn't have, except no smoking inside, and no one ever inspected our rooms that I know of.

The dorms I lived in college were super small and I mean small. You could have two beds two wardrobes and a long desk that was basically a large slab of like wood or something that both of you used. We had public bathrooms. Had to brush our teeth, do makeup, etc in the bathroom. There was one window. And like white concrete walls. And a mounted mirror. You had a shared kitchen in the building and couldn't have most cooking objects. You were allowed only a mini fridge but it couldn't have a freezer above it. And obviously like you could have stuff to make the food in. Oh, and walls were not sound proof 🙄 but genuinely college was a good experience

As an European, I could never imagine sharing a dorm with a person my age at the stage of a young adult. I need privacy and the thought of the bathroom situation is making me even more anxious. I am still traumatised by my last school trip in 8th grade where I avoided the toilet for 5 days. That was a lot of physical pain lol. The college I went to where I stayed in dorms was built in 1938. Each floor had a communal bathroom and a communal kitchen. The ground floor had a commons area with couches and a big TV. It was in the Midwest, and the building had No Air-conditioning. It was torture. Both years I paid extra to have a single because the idea of sharing with a total stranger was horrendously unappealing. My 2nd year I got this teeeeeny tiny room, but it had a private bath room with its own shower. So it was worth it. Like, I literally have a walk-in closet in my house right now that is larger than that dorm room was. It had enough room for a bed, a small desk, and a gap for a ‘closet’ where I put my mini fridge.

I went to University and we had best doorms in country (Latvia, Europe). They are small appartment style: super small entrance way with build in closet and fridge if you had one (or was left from previous students) and mirror, then 2 small rooms for 4 students and decent sized bathroom. Each floor had 2 kitchens. We could mount things on wall and had to bring our own furniture. Rooms only had 2 beds. We had to clean our rooms ourselves including bathroom. We also could organize parties in dorms like typical American comedies show! A lot of fun memories from that time. Price was super affordable as well. You could also choose your roommates in advance if you went there with friends.

We can’t have extension cords, tapestries, flags, anything on the walls within 6 inches of the ceiling, no lofting beds, no curtains, and you can’t bring your own desk chairs. The desk chairs are rocking chairs but they don’t rock all the way back. They suck. You’ll be sitting studying then suddenly u fall back and jolt forward again. I lived in an apartment style dorm room, so it wasn't the classic style (3 bedrooms, 2 people per room, each pair shared a bathroom, and all 6 shared kitchen/living). I had friends who lived in the more classic style and they had a bed, a desk, and then built-in storage for clothes and stuff. They had a microwave downstairs for everyone to use, and each floor had its own public bathroom stalls and showers. No candles, no microwaves (in normal dorms, apartment style had full kitchen), no kettles, nothing that could cause a fire lol mini fridges were ok tho! Lol there was a huge cafeteria for everyone to eat at and just about everyone had a meal plan, so everyone started heading to the cafe at 5 when it opened for dinner 🤣 they had breakfast lunch and dinner, and we were allowed cars. My university was in a middle of nowhere type place (i.e not in the middle of a city) so we had to have cars. Nope, they had floor bathrooms and they had to walk to the bathroom to brush their teeth. 😹 And each building was either male or female. No co-ed

It's so weird hearing about so many restrictions and people coming to check your room... When I was at uni and rented a dorm room we only had a rule of not doing heavy stuff, like painting the walls and throwing away furniture provided. Tbh, there was a rule of "no pets" and "no moving furniture" but nobody really cared. I had a bigass tank with a hamster, several people had cats, some girl had a lizard. One dude had a pig for a year (that one did upset the chief lol). We could decorate however we want. For shared stuff, we had one kitchen for each floor (10 floors) and four washing machine rooms for whole building that we had to sign up for using in advance. Every four rooms (6 people) shared a bathroom. It was a really nice dorm and I'm so happy I got to live there :P 10/10 would rent again. Obviously every school had their own rules and layouts and those even varied between buildings. I was living in one on the edge of the city, people living right next to the uni had it nearer but the building was unpleasant.
