A lot of great names have been missed out though, Kompany, TAA, Wijnaldum, Dias, Gundogan, Fabinho, David Silva, Haaland, Mahrez, Foden and Firmino.

It was always astonishing to me that Liverpool never tried to improve upon their midfield after the CL and PL win. In my opinion the 2-3 years after that were a waste because had they improved upon an aging Fabinho and Henderson and injury prone players like Keita and Thiago. They would have been able to pinch another league title and possibly would have had another CL under their belt. Looking at now that they actually have a good midfield and Klopp is leaving… it just seems like such a tease of what could have been.

As a Liverpool fan i cant argue that the midfield 3 has to be all city players. Liverpool's midfield in their prime were all dogs and worked hard. Fabinho was unbelievable for us but Rodri is arguablly one of the best DMs the league has seen. If anything Wijnaldum is our best hope of getting in that midfield. He was our most important midfielder, was never injured, could play in multiple positions, technically brilliant, massive engine, never lost the ball, scored some clutch goals, was always at least a 7/10 for us, he was 100% an unsung hero in that team it only took us till this season to replace him properly. Not saying he would get in the midfield but he definelty deserved a more honourable mention imo.

I'd like to dispute this with my (probably bias-influenced) XI, playing in a 4231. Assuming this is a prime/peak team of each player: Alisson; Trent, Dias, Virgil, Robertson; Fabinho, Rodri; Salah, De Bruyne, Mane; Haaland. Alisson goes without saying, best keeper ITW. Trent - potentially more suspect defensively than Walker, but his crossing in the 18/19 season with Haaland to aim at would double his record-breaking assist tally for a defender. Dias - at his best a wall. Wouldn't need to be so clean with the ball with everyone around him. Van Dijk best in the world, end of conversation. Robbo - like Trent, at his best up & down, link up play with Mane was a joke and crossing also would just find Haaland. Fabinho & Rodri as a double pivot. The reason Trent can go in with any "He can't defend allegations" because you put these two alongside each other and who's getting past them on the counter. Both aerial presences. At his best Fabinho was the best BWM in the world, covering for 4 men and allowing us to press so high (his drop off is why our press broke down last year). Rodri comes in and becomes takes Fabinho's mantle as best DM in the world, does all the defending and adds a metronomic control of the tempo with his passing. If you can get past them, good luck with the two CBs or Ali. Salah, best RW ITW. His best season, 17/18 he gets 57 goal contributions and should have won the ballon d'or. Imagine adding De Bruyne's creativity to that. As said. Give KDB the old fashion 10 role. You're free to roam, go where you like and do what you want. Would be a cheat code. Mane. His dribbling at his best was mesmerising, his pace electric and his strength probably only bettered by Adama Troare amongst wingers. Goals, assists, movement, cool haircut before the hairline recedes. Less said about his wife, the better in this theoretical conversation. Best LW ITW at his peak, 2nd to Benzema for Ballon D'Or. Haaland. Mentioned earlier, but Imagine giving the ultimate poacher service from Trent, Robbo, Rodri, Salah, Mane and a free-role KDB. I'm not joking when I say he could get 2 goals per game over a league season with that service. Underrated consideration for this XI is their overall physical presence. Imagine having Trent & Robbo inswinging a corner onto Virgil, Dias, Haaland, Fabinho, Rodri and Mane marking the keeper with KDB and Salah waiting for a headed clearance to score a volley. Buvey conveniently overlooking any Liverpool midfielders as a big City fan. Obviously basing on City’s continued success but let’s not forget Fabinho was in a Liverpool midfield which got to Champions League finals and 3 times 90 points plus including one season about 20 points above City. Not even a Liverpool fan but he would get a place for me.

This combined XI is genuinely one of the hardest to make because in all actuality, we could make 3-5 iterations and all of them would be insane.

The only change I'd make to their selection would be Bernardo Silva for Gundogan, just because I prefer Silva and think he's overall the better player of the 2, but not by much.
