Real iron powder on a stretched canvas (32 x 40). White chalk markers on a black surface.
This video is a follow up to the previous demo using white chalk markers on a canvas panel that had a black primer applied.
You can see the original video here
• Mono printing with cha...
Iron powder, PVA glue, spray with Hydrogen Peroxide (food grade 12%) Vinegar and salt water.
The canvas has been painted with a black gesso primer and the composition was created with white chalk markers as shown in the previous video. I have not fixed the chalk before moving onto this next stage because I wanted to see if the water would create an interesting effect when I began to spray the canvas.
The real iron powder has been applied in a very thin layer (you can find iron powder on ebay or sculpture suppliers) I paint PVA glue over the areas that I want the iron to fix to then sprinkle a very small amount of the powder ( this iron powder has a small amount of gravel mixed with it from a previous work) When the glue is dry shake of any access powder and you are ready to begin the process of oxidizing the iron. I begin by spraying with the Hydrogen Peroxide, leave this for an hour then spray again the effects and colour change is almost instant but over time this will increase. I then add a little salt water and vinegar to the Hydrogen Peroxide and continue to spray, allowing about half an hour between sprays. When you have achieved the effect you want, leave overnight to dry then finish with a spray of acrylic matte varnish (this may change the colours so you could try a test spray first)

The end sequence with the camerawork is stupendous. It’s like a fly past of an alien terrain on some distant planet. Tremendous.

Oh, awesome. I do assemblage and collage, and I love rust. I've tried to use finnebar rust paste but it dries out, and, well, it's kinda faking it. Meanwhile, I have this giant bag of iron powder from doing magnetic slime with my students last year. After seeing how messy that was, there's no way I'm using it for ferrofluid as originally planned. Seriously, this is exactly what I needed to spend some time in my own art studio! I can't wait to play with real rust! (Maybe I'll even let some of my older students try it.)

I'm not sure why you're using PVA glue as an adhesive for the iron powder. Have you tried using an acrylic matte medium instead?

I think a non water based glue would be better and will try this, you could also mix with a little varnish maybe. Thanks for the tip.

Hi again Dan love our work but I cant find exactly where to purchase the powders and how to use I see below some one mentioned Hydrogen peroxide and also vinegar and water is this also for the copper I am buying your book from you but Im not sure if it has all the relevant info where to buy oxides and how to use can you help me with these questions thanks Dan

Sorry you are having trouble. Most materials can be found on ebay or Amazon but this is a link to a sculpture supply website that I use. www.tiranti.co.uk/Products/iron-filler The Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar mix work great with the iron but for the copper try a patination fluid. Thanks for buying the booklet, although this just features the monoprinting techniques. I will work on a new book of art projects this year. Hope this helps. I will try to put some info on a printout when I post your order.

This and your other work is really great and inspiring. I do have a question about working with this process- how stable is it once complete? I usually obsess too much probably about things being archival… any idea on how best to seal or protect this once complete, and how it will or will not degrade or change further over time?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 2 жыл бұрын
I will spray this with a few coats of acrylic matte varnish, although this will darken the colours slightly. I will not continue to degrad as it only affects the metal powder and not the canvas.

Thank you so much for sharing all your tricks! They give us so much power and inspiration. And this one, wow! The video is perfect, professional, and it is great to see, how the iron transforms. Where you can get the 12% Hydrogen Peroxide? They have only the 8% here (Switzerland). I wish you good health and good results with your artwork.

Hi Elisabeth, in der Schweiz habe ich 12% Wasserstoffperoxyd in der Drogerie bekommen. Die hatten keinen 12% vorrätig, aberdirekt für mich so gemischt. Ein Versuch ist es allemal wert 😉

What a wonderful technique. I am assuming you had to figure out the ratio of peroxide, vinegar and salt water but would you say more of one element gave you more effect? Also, does this have to be sealed a certain way?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 2 жыл бұрын
I just spray the peroxide to begin with then try various amounts of salt water and vinegar, it is just a case of seeing what happens the change is almost instant. I usually fix with a spray of varnish although this will darken the colours slightly.

I use a combination of Hydrogen Peroxide, Salt water with a little vinegar. This is just to speed up the process of oxidization. Allow about an hour between sprays.

Dan I love this technique want so badly to experiment with the iron powder... is the powder just iron or other metals mixed in? Can I use dust from an iron shop? Crystal, that's why I love KZfaq so much. I'm sitting here in Germany, you are watching the same video there in Ethiopia, and we are both asking, where to get iron powder... KZfaq makes the world smaller in the best way. 😍 Wish you all the best, stay healthy and good luck with the iron dust!

When I made this demo I didn't think that this powder would be difficult to get hold of and I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with this. Any iron powder would work, you could use iron the dust from an iron shop or factory, any metal that rusts should work. Hope you get some. And thanks for watching.
