For those that don't know that is the Hobbicat that isn't made of fiberglass. Basically high strength injection molded plastic so it's super durable for dockings such as this.

The hobie tattoo was made in France, lots of design problems especially poor support for the stays leading to cracks in the hulls, the Americans took over production and re designed the boat, the T2 is much stronger and a fair performer. The boat in the video looks slightly smaller but is the same type,

Looks like a Hobie 18. Can't believe he left that main up after docking though as it only takes a few seconds to drop it. I owned the 16 back in the day. However the 16 had a strong tendency to pitch pole that was corrected with the 18.

Look at all the CCC’s critiquing this sailors technique and motivation. He docked like a boss, tied his line, and walked off to retrieve his dolly. He raised his rudders when it was necessary and used the SAIL to assist rolling his cat back to his trailer.

Back in late '80's, I worked for a new sailboat dealer. The service manager at that time had a 26' Nonsuch catboat (single main sail), 10' 6" beam, 4'6" draft & 9000 lbs. He would sail (4 cyl. Inboard diesel OFF) in & around the marina basin like he was motoring an 8 foot dinghy. Only 150 feet or less to U-turn in or smash into millions of dollars worth of yatchs. This video fairly straight forward, compared to the close maneuvering I witnessed in a full sized, live aboard sailboat. He was cocky but a superb sailer. Edit: I do recall a story where, on the Ct. River... he sailed so close to & along side a fuel dock, the main sheet (the ROPE from boat to end of boom) caught on a piling. I'd heard it stopped the boat instantly, SLAMMING the side of the hull into the fixed face dock. Very embarrassing for him.

These cats are meant to enter the slipway like this. Rudder blades fold automatically as they touch the bottom. The fact is that the slipway prepared for these boats are covered with a thick net, so that the hull never touches the concrete, even if they are polyethylene made as in this model. In this situation here, where the slipway in not covered and you are approaching in a reach, I would have resealed the clew of the sail (is easy, there is only a big hook attaching it to the sheet) letting the sail to flap freely, de-powering it as much as possible

You've never seen a sailboat do this? Sail down wind into a launch or beach, then slide their hulls on on concrete/sand? Not good for the hulls, imagine if they were fiberglass. Also not good to sail downwind into a launch. What one should do especially is the wind is strong, is sail to the end of the dock while turning into the wind, and back in, or put ones sail down and scull into the launch. Now on this day because this is a Wave and the wind is light, sure what he did is fine, that is if you do not mind scratching the bottom of ones hulls.

Seen cats do that all the time… was a dealer 4 many years, and full time on the south Texas coast. The beach dolly’s were exceptional for moving them around on beaches. Especially for our rentals…. Coming into a launch ramp area though can be very dangerous. Especially if a crew failed to scout for overhead power lines. The legendary 14, 16 and 18 had masts up to 28 ft high. In March of ‘89 a highly ranked sailor and the Hobie Division 6 Commodore for all south Texas were found dead between the hulls of a Hobie 16 on South Padre Island. Their mast was around six feet away from a power line, but the electricity arched over to their mast killing them both instantly. The Division Commodore was an incredibly super beautiful blonde attorney. Those two deaths shocked the entire Hobie World. It was very hard for many of us. Years before this accident, Hobie pursued a national bounty in an effort to identify and remove or secure an adjustment concerning these power lines or whatever from launch ramps or where ever boats were at definite risk.

I have a new generic catamaran and/or trimaran hull design which i've call the ARC hull design. It is new/novel and therefore patentable. The hull is asymmetric. Though, for description purposes, it could be described as a variant of a conventional symmetric and a conventional asymmetric hull shape. Since, its shape is symmetrical above the waterline and asymmetrical below the waterline, the result of extending existing lines of a conventional symmetric hull at and below the waterline. This catamaran and/or trimaran hullshape is suitable for a range of craft from SAILING to small and medium POWER craft. SAILING: The hull's benefits for a sailing catamaran or trimaran are; *speed *pointing ability - VMG *no necessity for of dagger or centreboard *simple, flat panel design lines, ease of manufacture. POWER CRAFT: Benefits of an symmetrical hull shape without the negative characteristics such as; *speed of asymmetric shape *more balanced reaction to waves - less broaching *banks in turns To anyone with interest, designer or those wanting to make their own ply/epoxy boat. Rudders will flip up, but the plastic hulls gets scratched and gouged. After a bunch of repeated landings like that it will eventually wear a hole

My Hobie cat was fiberglass.... not positive about this exact model. This guy did it wrong. He should have walked the boat close to the launch then floated the kart under the cat then rolled it out of the water.

I'm guessing it's not his boat and he works at a rental place. Boss control, but he obviously doesn't give a hoot about the boat.

I have many thousands of Hobie hours. You know nothing. Even with titanium keels added, this landing sucks.

No. They are tied on the hulls after the boat is partially beached.
