Creed is a movie about a young man named Adonis who wants to follow in his father's footsteps and become a professional boxer. The movie covers themes of fatherhood, masculinity, and what it means to be a man. This video dives into those themes and looks at how the movie and its sequel portrays positive masculinity.
There will be no spoilers for Creed 3. This Video focuses on Creed (2015) and Creed 2 (2019). I will be doing a Video Essay on Creed 3 when that movie is released on digital or blu-ray.
I'm Dylan, and THIS is the Writer's Block

I think we're finally seeing this masculinity, and we've seen it before. Whitebeard from OP, Stoic from HTTYD, Iroh from Avatar. These great masculine characters all have something in common. They all show great emotion and care for people deeply, and they are some of the strongest characters in their series. Positive masculinity will make you a great and strong man. Just look at the dragon of the west.

Thank you so much! It's incredibly meaningful to see that the video is connecting with people in an impactful way. These movies paint such a vivid portrait of these people and I think it can sometimes go underappreciated. You feel the authenticity in each character because they are being explored as real people with flaws and shortcomings. There's more to them than just the plot of the movie. Once again so glad this made an impact with you! And specifically thank you for sharing that in a comment. This video seems to be doing well, but the actual performance of any of my videos can vary wildly. So knowing people like you care about what is being said, and that they are starting important discussions, really gives me the drive to keep working on these regardless of whether or not a specific video gets a lot of views. Thank you sincerely.

Seeing a story about how vulnerable these men got was crazy to see in theaters. I walked out with no words , just amazed at how good it was , trying to put my finger on what it was that made it so great. Was it the cinematography? The fight choreography? I ultimately decided on how they chose to tell the story behind adonis and damian , and how impactful thier actions were behind every action. Sure the previous creed/rocky movies touched on the vulnerability abd relatiobships between men, but having an emphasis put on it as driving force of the plot on creed lll elevated it to another level

Grew up with Lord of the Rings (books/films) Aragorn is brave, heroic, wears dresses & gowns, recites poetry, excels in combat, is ruggedly handsome, cries a lot, and expresses his deep love for his friends. Well I think the thing is "true" masculinity doesn't exist. It's the pursuit of a static/ predetermined ideal of what is masculine that creates problems. Defining masculinity (or feminity, etc etc) for yourself and honoring those ideals (aka having personal) is what makes those traits positive

Ok so people on both sides ff the issue have warped the meaning of toxic masculinity. Its not a set of traits. It's the negative habits we portray in the PURSUIT of an idealized version of masculinity. Masculinity isn't toxic. Being so desperate to appear masculine that you hurt others or let your own life fall apart is what toxic masculinity refers to. Its very much a real phenomenon, even if there are those who use the word incorrectly

I'm only two movies in on my rewatch of the franchise, but man, I'm almost in tears watching Rocky in the second movie's montage and he has half of Philidelphia's kids running behind him as he's making his way to City Hall, and it makes me want to be better. He's come a long way from being this guy that wastes his potential and shaking people up to collect debts. What also makes it work so well is that he was struggling to get anywhere without Adrian's approval. He tried to change for her even though she never asked, and she was supportive of that choice, but then he had a crisis of identity and it put the family in such stress that it broke them both and puts her in a coma. She doesn't like the idea of him being beaten up, but she ultimately wants him to be his true self and his true self inspires all of Philidelphia, and they help inspire him, which makes it all the better when he does eventually win the Heavyweight Title because it's really everyone standing up against one man's ego. Apollo's constantly putting people down, people are putting him down, too, and Rocky's story is the complete opposite, and it's beautiful. He's making time for things that really matter, he's only able to get better by the support of others, and it's a perpetual cycle that gets Rocky to the top, it's not just about two guys punching each other for our entertainment (because that only totals maybe 10 minutes of the runtime anyway).

@@brooklynbred1460 Dude, it all began with ROCKY so it's not unrelated. Creed continues that legacy and can even surpass what the Rocky movies achieved, but it doesn't mean they're invalid from the conversation.

I think masculinity and machismo has been very berated in recent years and has been labeled as something bad and something that should just be kept down. When really the real issue that we as men have isn’t masculinity and machismo, it’s expression and being open about our emotions. Masculinity should be something positive that should be celebrated but it should also strive to be something that is mentally and physically healthy.

Whitebeard from One Piece is an all time great example of what true masculinity. Whitebeard literally fought an entire war just to save his adoptive son, and throughout the war, he shows not only great power, integrity and just a paramount of physique, he took the time to show emotion, hugging a crew member despite Skuard stabbing him with intent to kill, making a point to show that a father's greatest shame is not to fail his son, because Whitebeard certainly made mistakes, hence Ace ending up at marineford in the first place, but instead his greatest shame is to bury his son. He shows unconditional love and acceptance to each and every member of his crew, regardless of their race, identity, species or even when they betray him, but also know and respect them enough to stand alongside them in battle. Really appreciate this video man. Been in a slump lately because of certain areas in my life not going well. I think you can relate as a KZfaqr that it´s frustrating when your videos don´t get the amount of views you want. Comparing myself to others, thinking wins or titles validate the whole process. This video made me realize that as that is Adonis´ whole arc. I gotta realise that these things I care about are in my blood and that I care a lot more about the things that they make me tell about myself, instead of what others could tell me. Or at least, I should start to prioritize that. And the fact I also care about being the best version of myself for others. Not because they could look at me and validate me and think wow you did great, but because I care about them and myself. I remember a line of Adonis that says ´´I wouldn't be any good to you if I stopped being who I was.´´ You´re a great guy. this vid made a lot of people open up in the comments and its very nice to see you responded to them in a personal way. Man I really need to rewatch the original creed. I haven’t seen it since it came out, although I’ve rewatched the second one multiple times bc that desert training scene motivates me like nothing else. As a die hard fan of the first 4 Rocky movies(yes the 4th is absolute propaganda, but nostalgia has a firm grip on me), I can’t help but see the Creed movies as more mature than the Rocky series, with the exception of the original Rocky, as that is simply a movie about a very human boxer rather than a boxing movie, which is a label that I don’t think any of the subsequent movies have been able, or even tried to escape. I adore creed 2/3 bc they’re great sports movies with realistic characters and hype/emotional moments, but this video really inspired me to revisit the original. I’m a sucker for father-child dynamics due to years of media like god of war, Logan and the last of us

I have always loved these Rocky - and now Creed, too - movies, for almost twenty years now. And in recent years I come to see these as first and foremost films about becoming, finding, enduring, prevailing, courage, and heart. Not necessarily in that order. Then the Boxing afterwards. Rocky is the ultimate underdog story, but to me the film I always see is Rocky finding stability and confidence in himself, rather than just a boxing film. You’re your own worst enemy. In Creed, as Rocky says to Adonis pointing to him in the mirror, “That’s your toughest opponent.”

Excellent video. This essay really just made me appreciate more Creed 1 & 2 while also being disappointed in Creed 3. The third film was missing a ton- Rocky was only a portion of it. It had potential, but every part of the film felt like there was a missing piece to further develop the characters or the story in a proper pace.

It's true about the movie in terms of Creed's mom. A mother never wants to see her grown son defeated in the ring or in life in general but there are times that only that son can come out from that dark place and reconstruct himself from inside our. Been there done that. That's why does life imitates art or art imitates life. There's times we can learn from movies.

None of the Rocky/Creed films are about boxing. Sylvester Stallone wanted to show how to take on life with the visuals of boxing and Ryan Coogler understood that too when writing the films. They’ve never been about boxing and that’s what’s so beautiful about the Rocky films even the corny ones and also the Creed Films

I liked this video, nice work. For me they’re all great, but I would say my order is Creed then Creed II then Creed III. Creed and Rocky are my two favs of all Creed and Rocky movies, they’re two of my top films of all time. But I also loved Creed 2, and 3 well, while I enjoy this one the least amount out of the Creed series, I thought was very good despite its flaws.

So happy they continued the Rocky franchise in such a honest a respectful way. After seeing so many of my favorite movies/shows be recreated, continued and ultimately butchered this is so refreshing and I can’t believe it took me so long to watch the creed movies (but it was nice to watch the first two back to back before the third came out, still haven’t seen it tho 😢)

I really appreciate this analysis. I would love to hear your take on CREED III and how it carries on the exploration of masculinity. I feel like III is about survivors guilt and Donny first falters by trying to make things right as a response to the guilt he feels, at the expense of those closest to him. From Dame's perspective, the movie is about how the punitive systems in society, which are especially punitive towards Black men, induce trauma and force men to resort to manipulation and coercion to gain the spoils promised by capitalism. In fighting each other, the men perpetuate the trauma they experienced as young boys. It is the conversation after the fight that brings the true resolution, when they forgive one another and absolve one another of guilt.

Every human being will cry at some point about whatever crying doesn't make you less of a man or close defining masculinity its therapeutic to help us move forward in life !! However !! having a life long pity party doesn't help anything either whatever comes up deal with it right then and there, positive masculinity doesn't define character strength of character defines character an any type of toxic masculinity you encounter MEN and WOMEN kick bricks in other direction because those toxic people don't mind if you get caught up in their self destructive mindset because like saying goes '' misery loves company ' !!

@@MrNotaComedian Missing rocky, changed the vulnerability we loved about Adonis. Meaning, We as MEN seek elder men for guidance, there was only Adonis in this film betrayed by his fellow brother. So how did we revert to young version of Adonis from the foster system in Creed 1? He literally only knew how to fight in this film, taught his daughter that you need to fight back sometimes. But that goes completely against Creed 1, where he was taught in every fight your toughest opponent is yourself. Rocky woulda told Adonis’ daughter to control her anger not lash out “because sometimes you need to”, but rather find strength in her confidence. Movie as a stand alone is okay, but chronology as a boxing movie and a rocky saga film. falls short.

I dont understand why we have to put masculinity into different boxes like positive or toxic. Masculinity is just one thing and thats it.
@TheWritersBlockOfficial
@TheWritersBlockOfficial Жыл бұрын
Well if you define masculinity as a concrete thing, there will inherently be positive and negative aspects. The point of the video is that by finding your own purpose and core values within masculinity it inherently becomes positive. When other peoples perception of "masculinity" is in the drivers seat, controlling you rather than the other way around, that's when it becomes negative
